70s Christmas

Hi.
DH and I are doing a 70s themed Christmas this year. We're ridiculously excited about it actually. Grin.

Now, I've been getting the decorations in bit by bit. No problems with vintage fairy lights, baubles, foil garlands, daft looking fairies etc. But I cannot seem to find a silver tinsel tree ANYWHERE.

And I really want one.

Am I too early in the year? Does anyone have any idea where I might find what I'm after? All I've been able to find is tiny 2ft ones. I want 5ft at LEAST.

You need mateus rose!

And definitely paper chains.

You also need to start boiling the brussel sprouts now!

I’ve replied Smile

Thanks. I don't seem to get notifications for some reason.

Ah. @Doryhunky. If you're asking me. All my lights are vintage ones from eBay. They have loads.

Don't forget the crab stick Vol au vents and the tinned salmon for the buffet

This really is the thread that keeps on giving. 😂

@ExpeditionEverest Haha I actually bought that very vinyl record a few years ago for a nostalgia trip!

70s yule log - Buy a small chocolate swiss roll, cover it with chocolate buttercream and drag a fork along it to make it look like bark. Stick a plastic robin and some plastic holly leaves on top. Dust with icing sugar for that convincing snow effect.

catwithnohat · 10/08/2019 08:57

Hai Karate ....I've loved Blue Stratos lol

Brut not so much (big memories of Christmas in the late 70's) Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2019 19:01

My dad used Brut! The smell would be very evocative for me!

LuxuryWoman2018 · 10/08/2019 19:03

This thread has made me smile and made me so nostalgic, so many memories.

Fragalino · 11/08/2019 01:27

Celery and dollies 😍😍 how could I forget doiles!!

70sWitch · 12/08/2019 11:42

70s yule log
I'm given to understand I must also provide mixed nuts and crisps in a divided glass serving dish and something called a "hedgehog"

I do remember the components of the hedgehog - pineapple and cheese on a cocktail stick- but I have no memory of the hedgehog itself. I take it this apparition was the height of 70s sophistication.

What else, fellow nostalgists?

Used to make these in cookery (Home Economics) lessons at school. Had to make the chocolate swiss roll from scratch. Then beat the bejeesus out of butter and icing sugar and cocoa powder to make buttercream for the filling and topping.

Plastic robin decoration, and, 'Merry Christmas' sign (in proportion to the cake) put on, dust with icing sugar and...voila.

MissDew · 12/08/2019 13:30

pineapple and cheese on a cocktail stick- but I have no memory of the hedgehog itself

Big, raw, unpeeled potato. Covered in tin foil. Poke the cheese and pineapple on sticks into the foil covered potato to act as hedgehog spines. The cheese and pineapple must be uppermost on the cocktail sticks.

Also, sausages on sticks. Buy and cook some cocktail sausages. When they have gone cold. Put them on cocktail sticks. Put foil over another raw potato. Push the non-sausage end of the cocktail stick into the foiled potato. That's another, 'hedgehog' for your guests.

Oh my god following this as sounds amazing. In 2017 we bought loads of vintage coloured glass lights for our tree (sort of inspired by an early Only Fools and Horses Christmas episode!) - they looked brilliant, but it took about 8 sets to cover the tree and they kept blowing! We had to go back to yellow last year and just had colours on a little tree.

Can’t wait to see your pictures. I love Christmas and a 1970s/80s Christmas makes me feel SO CHRISTMASSY even though I wasn’t born until 1985!

thepointoforder · 12/08/2019 13:42

You must have one of those blue peter advent candles make out of wire hangers and flammable tinsel.

fortheloveofPete · 12/08/2019 13:51

(sorry in a rush)

Re the silver tree.

Would buying a cheap green one then using silver spray painton it be an idea?

70sWitch · 12/08/2019 15:05

@fortheloveofPete.

DH, is that you? Grin

This is a last resort plan as I don't think spray paint is really shiny enough.

Annoying purist here.
