70s Christmas

Hi.
DH and I are doing a 70s themed Christmas this year. We're ridiculously excited about it actually. Grin.

Now, I've been getting the decorations in bit by bit. No problems with vintage fairy lights, baubles, foil garlands, daft looking fairies etc. But I cannot seem to find a silver tinsel tree ANYWHERE.

And I really want one.

Am I too early in the year? Does anyone have any idea where I might find what I'm after? All I've been able to find is tiny 2ft ones. I want 5ft at LEAST.

Fanny cooks Christmas! Our teen DC watched it last year and were crying laughing. They couldn't believe it wasn't a comedy show.
The mincemeat omelette....scoop, scoop, scoop!

For presents what about an old record player and a LP of Grease or fame? Were Atari games invented then?
Subbutteo?
Hornby trainset?

Love the Carpenters Christmas album released in 1978. Called Christmas Portrait. Also Rocky Mountain Christmas by John Denver released in 1975.

Both are still played every Christmas in our house. Grown up kids request them!

bornonasunday · 29/08/2019 01:40

Love the idea, I'm dead jel!!
Tea must follow no later than 5.30, with the tin of Ye Olde Oak Ham taking centre stage (with the jelly still round it..yuk)

Everyone sat down to watch The Generation Game, The Two Ronnies and, of course, Morecambe and Wise!!

Enjoy!!

I saw one last year in the range!
They start to get them out in October.

I hope when the time comes to put the tree up you share a pic OP, sounds fab x

For a good laugh, I bring you "Dave Cooks the Turkey," from the Vinyl Cafe on CBC radio in Canada.

The Vinyl Cafe was a weekly show featuring music and storytelling by Stuart McLean, who was a genius. Most of the stories focused on the family of Dave and Morley, plus their children.

Sadly, Stuart McLean died far too young. His rendition of Dave Cooks the Turkey is brilliant, and very funny. Fits well with a 70s theme.

I hope you enjoy it as much as many Canadians, including me!

@tryingtobebetterallthetime

Rocky Mountain Christmas is a firm favourite in the Janeway household. It gets loaded on my iPod quite early on Grin

Another 70s classic in my home was the "fruit salad" we always had with Christmas dinner. An unbeatable combination of sour cream, coconut, mandarin orange sections, mini marshmallows, chunks of pineapple, a bit of vanilla extract and maybe other things I am forgetting this minute.

Believe it or not it tastes good, kind of refreshing.

If anyone is interested I will dig out my Mom's recipe and post it.

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 31/08/2019 01:18

Katherine Janeway. Yes, love John Denver. I have "Aspenglow" running through my mind right now!

KatherineJaneway · 31/08/2019 07:37

tryingtobebetterallthetime

Aspenglow is never off my iPod, whatever the time of year as is Christmas for Cowboys Grin

70sWitch · 31/08/2019 12:38

She's a little grubby. Any ideas on cleaning her up. I don't want to damage her.

Great thread OP. Reading it has made me realize that apparently I've been doing a 70's Christmas since, er, the 70's!

Shame I can't find Back in time for Christmas on the BBC iplayer, I would have liked to watch it. Definitely going to find the John Denver album for this year Grin

70sWitch · 05/09/2019 20:24

AnneKipanki ok that's spooky. I grew up on Oor Wullie and The Broons.
