My favourite is Santa Claus the movie. We watched it in the cinema when I was a little girl, it was my first cinema trip and we ate ice cream in little tubs.

Every year I watch it and enjoy it just as much as I did that first time.

Elf is a close second, then Christmas with the Kranks.

What's your favourite xmas film and why?

Muppets Christmas carol. The one and only. A fine, humorous, non-sentimental Christmas movie.

FernArable · 09/12/2013 16:15

Muppet Christmas Carol. Without a doubt.

Katnisscupcake · 09/12/2013 16:43

Got to be Scrooge with Albert Finney. I watched it with my parents as a child (we're all big fans of musicals) and still watch it every year. I don't allow myself to watch it before December.

This year we have FIL here for Xmas Eve so DH, FIL and I will watch 'It's a Wonderful Life' together once DD goes to bed. It'll be FIL's first Xmas without his wife (not DH's Mum - his second wife - they've just split up Sad) so I'm not sure the film will help - but he'll be with family at least.

pinotagogo · 09/12/2013 17:13

Can't believe The Bishop's Wife hasn't had a mention, (the original with Cary Grant and David Niven and NOT the renamed remake with Whitney Houston). It's Black and white and completely schmaltzy but I love it. To my shame i've never seen Elf and judging by all the fans here I'd better warm up a mince pie, get my finger out and watch it! Oh yeah, and Die Hard is always good for some alternative Action Christmas!

Badgerwife · 09/12/2013 18:13

Not strictly a Christmas movie but I watch Little Women every year in December and have a little cry when Beth dies.

Second favourite is Elf

DuckToWater · 09/12/2013 18:39

I just came on to say Scrooge with Albert Finney, Katniss.

Other than that I associate Mary Poppins with Christmas as it often used to be shown on Christmas Day.

I just can't sit through Muppet films- neither as a kid, nor an adult. I like the Muppets as characters and some of the humour but I find it all very hit and miss.

DuckToWater · 09/12/2013 18:42

I haven't seen most of the films mentioned as I just don't fancy them at all. Another one I loved as a kid was The Christmas Martian.

BuntyPenfold · 09/12/2013 18:43

Bernard and the Genie.

Trapper · 09/12/2013 18:48

Santa with Muscles with Hulk Hogan!

andagiraffeinapineappletree · 09/12/2013 19:03

surviving christmas with ben affleck and james gandolphini is an ok watch not best ever but def ok as far as dysfunctional family ones go.

andagiraffeinapineappletree · 09/12/2013 19:05

Another 'i don't get it' for the polar express here too. We have the dvd but its only been watched once.

MyMiddleNameIsLaura · 09/12/2013 19:16

Can I ask if Santa Claus the movie is a good one for four year olds? We've got a film afternoon planned with our friends and we're trying to find a Christmas movie that we'll all like.

CorrieDale · 09/12/2013 19:43

Oddly thrilled that the muppets are in the lead. And looking forward to the weekend when our scout elf will be giving the dc a copy of elf, because we haven't seen it yet and it seems pretty popular.

Beastofburden · 09/12/2013 20:03

Love love the muppets, so glad it is leading.

Have avoided elf so far as am not keen on cute/zany films but perhaps I have misjudged it and should give it a go.

Beastofburden · 09/12/2013 20:03

Laura the four year old would probably love the muppets and it is good for adults too...

The George C Scott version of A Christmas Carol was shot in Shrewsbury and we love spotting the locations.

Elf is still in the lead, but it's v close. Beast, definitely give it a go. I didn't fancy it at all, but it's funny and brilliant.

MyMiddleName, I LOVE SCTM, it's my favourite, but that is probably because I associate it with one of my happiest childhood memories. It's schmaltzy and very 80's, but just makes me smile.

Otherwise, my tip is Elf.

Thegreylady, was it? I didn't know that. You'll have to tell me some tomorrow

I love Home Alone too - it's one of the few films my children (boy/girls) and husband & I enjoy watching together and never tire of!
It is just so funny ,with a genuinely moving sub plot which always brings a tear to my eye

Elizadoesdolittle · 09/12/2013 21:22

beast I thought I'd hate Elf. I can't stand Will Farrel normally but it really is good. It's funny and heart warming and not too schmultzy.

whatsagoodusername · 09/12/2013 21:51

Santa With Muscles - An evil millionaire (Hulk Hogan) gets amnesia and then belives that he is Santa Claus. What is not to love about this?

We did find a gem the other day on Netflix - Holiday In Handcuffs, with Melissa Joan Hart. It was fabulous.

Beastofburden · 09/12/2013 21:54

I will give elf a go. Thanks!

VanillaMiceCream · 09/12/2013 21:59
