My favourite is Santa Claus the movie. We watched it in the cinema when I was a little girl, it was my first cinema trip and we ate ice cream in little tubs.

Every year I watch it and enjoy it just as much as I did that first time.

Elf is a close second, then Christmas with the Kranks.

What's your favourite xmas film and why?

Ooh, just seen the list, also love White Christmas, especially the songs - love a bit of nostalgia. And A Hundred and one dalmatians is quite Christmassy in places, with all that snow? And how could I forget The Snowman - a wonderful classic, but maybe a bit short for best XMas Movie contender?
Anyway, I've voted already Xmas Blush

When Zombie was but a wee Zombiette, American TV always showed Peter Pan (the version with Mary Martin as Peter) at Christmas. That's her defining Christmas TV memory.

JugglingUnwiselyWithBaubles · 08/12/2013 17:47

Sorry to be trouble - what's new?! - but can I change mine from Elf to A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart - they're both part of our Christmas but watching A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve has become more of a tradition here. And though it's had a mention I don't think it's got a vote yet. Would like to see it on the list Thanks

TheHeadlessLadyofCannock · 08/12/2013 17:48

Muppet Christmas Carol.

I like Miracle on 34th St too. But It's a Wonderful Life is sentimental gubbins and Jimmy Stewart is a card-carrying Creepy Weirdo.

JaneEyresHeir · 08/12/2013 17:50

It's a wonderful life is mine!

It's not a Christmas movie as such but I always watch Little Women (the one with Winona Ryder) while wrapping presents. :)

Also LOVE Arthur Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life, they both make me cry. Also the new Miracle on 34th Street is lovely.

LadyRochford · 08/12/2013 18:34

Love actually is our number one. Just the right mix of laughter, tears, story and schmaltz.

Elf number two.

flossieflower · 08/12/2013 18:38

Muppet Christmas Carol and Arthur Christmas jointly!

Zamboni · 08/12/2013 18:45

Love Actually for me.

Also like Elf and The Holiday.

MARGUERITE18 · 08/12/2013 18:48

I think Bernard and the genie
dd1 thinks the greatest store in the world
dd2 thinks the search for santa paws

:)

bigTillyMintspie · 08/12/2013 18:56

Love Actually.

And I love the Raymond Briggs version of Father ChristmasSmile

bigTillyMintspie · 08/12/2013 18:57

Zamboni, is The Holiday something about a woman getting stuck somewhere (house!) in the snow?

hestergraysgarden · 08/12/2013 19:01

Another one for A Muppet Christmas Carol. It's wonderful - we always watch it on Christmas Eve and I get all gooey when Kermit sings 'One More Sleep Til Christmas'.

HOWEVER!!!

Has anyone else noticed that the DVD edition (and every version I have seen on TV in recent years) always misses out the song between Scrooge and Belle. It's this one:

I used to love that song when I was little. In fact I used to spend the rest of the year acting it out, in the same manner that I used to act out Eleanor Rigby when I was even littler (if anyone is wondering, the correct way to stage these songs is to wander about the landing with a white bed sheet draped about one's shoulders, looking mournful yet at the same time quite stately and aloof).

Why was it cut? There's even a reprise at the end ("The Love is Found") which makes no sense without the full song as a counter!!!!

thinly disguised attempt to hijack the thread in order to gather supporters for a government petition

LeonardoAcropolis · 08/12/2013 19:02

White Christmas! Such a lovely film. I also love Love Actually, the Muppets and Beauty and the Beast Belle's Magic Christmas (or something like that ) Xmas Blush

Oh, a few years ago, I dont know why, but I always put up the xmas tree whilst watching The Fith Element Xmas Confused

CalamitouslyWrong · 08/12/2013 19:21

The search for Santa paws is crap. There is nothing good about it, at all.

PoppyRoseViolet · 08/12/2013 19:36

So many to choose from, but A Christmas Carol (with Patrick Stewart and Richard E Grant) a favourite with us! Xmas Grin

SpinCycle · 08/12/2013 19:52

Muppet Christmas Carol every time.
Though I also really like Arthur Christmas. Give it a couple of years and I think it will also be a classic.

Ridersofthestorm · 08/12/2013 20:00

Just asked my dp what his fav Xmas film is and he said Gremlins, deadly serious too haha.

I love Santa Claus the movie, I loved it so much as a child and still get all warm inside watching it. Oh and It's a wonderful life, I ball my eyes out every time, beautiful film.

hestergraysgarden · 08/12/2013 20:13

Is Santa Claus the Movie the one with Dudley Moore and the rich ginger girl / homeless boy subplot? And John Lithgow? Something about magic lollipops containing reindeer feed...

(No offense meant to gingers, btw, I am one myself!)

MARGUERITE18 · 08/12/2013 20:18

wow your nice

Pigeonpair1 · 08/12/2013 20:33

Got to be National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. I have seen it so many times but it still make me laugh.

SQUIRRRRRREEELLLLLLLL!!!!!

RobinSparkles · 08/12/2013 20:33

I couldn't possibly name my favourite Christmas film as I love them all but I can't believe we've got to page 5 and NOBODY has mentioned The Santa Clause! I love that film!

I also love Miracle on 34th Street, Love Actually and I think that Home Alone 2 is better than the first one.

Hester, that's the one.

I love Gremlins, it's ace. I'm boring keeping dh abreast of my findings (all very scientific) and he's horrified Die Hard isn't higher. I'm trying to persuade him to watch Love Actually. He is being a Grinch Xmas Grin
