Chicken pox question. One of my DT's woke up this morning with blistery spots on his tummy, groin, bum and face. Pretty sure it is chicken pox. He seems fine with it not itching yet - does that happen later ?

What creams lotions are good to help wit irriation, itching etc ?
I have heard camomile teabags in a cool bath can help but I am otherwise clueless.
TIA Smile

Porridge oats in the bath worked great for us. Put them inside an old pair of tights. You can then use it to bathe them too. Mine weren't too bad with it. Hope yours are the same! :)

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 13/07/2012 14:33

Thanks bumbely - will add oats to the shopping list.

Get loads of tubs of bicarb also brilliant in the bath. When dd had it terribly we spent a few nearly whole days with her in the bath watching dvds on the laptop.

Sympathies my two had it three summers ago, we missed pretty much the whole summer due to one or the other being infectious.

Flossbert · 13/07/2012 14:37

We did oats too. And poxclin which is a mousse which is much easier to put on the child than calamine lotion. Also piriton helps with itching and gave us our first good night's sleep in 2 years!

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 13/07/2012 20:11

Thanks for your help.

Just looking at him makes me feel itchy, but he seems fine.

I found poxclin to be amazing dd1 had cp when she was 10 months, so she really didnt understand that scratching feels good but its bad! As soon as I applied the poxclin foam she stopped scratching.

It is a little expensive but I would use it on dd2 in a heartbeat Smile

SizzleSazz · 13/07/2012 21:52

We used Piriton & Virasoothe

DD2 reacted to Piriton but it worked brilliantly for DD1

bumbleymummy · 14/07/2012 10:35

We just used aqueous calamine on the spots and I put a bit of tea tree oil on the few that were a bit bigger and redder. Apart from waking up a bit itchy during the night (reapplied cream) they were absolutely fine with it - no loss of apetite or anything. We just got on with normal stuff around the house and I let them play in the bath a lot. :)

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 14/07/2012 10:49

Smile So far so good, the spots dont seem to bother him.....yet. I have googled images of chicken pox spots and I think he has a very mild dose - I really cant stop itching now.
Not all the spots have blistered yet so not to sure if they will start to itch when they do.
He seems a bit warm and lethargic today so is his brother - fingers crosed they will have it at the same time, we can get it over an done with then.
Thanks for all your help Smile

Hi my DD is just coming to the end of her chicken pox , the spots appeared last Friday .

I was advised to use virasoothe by the pharmacist but it didn't help at all. On day 3 she was so itchy and uncomfortable even after a dose of piriton I decided to try Lanes tea tree and witch hazel cream on each spot ( I had some left over from treating my son's Molluscum Contagiosum) put some tea tree face wash in her bath.

Worked instantly!

ValiumQueen · 14/07/2012 10:57

My DD age 2 came out with this yesterday too. It tends to peak on day 3. We are using just ViralSoothe, and it is awesome compared to what I used with DD1 - oats, calamine etc. it is over £8, can get it from boots, and is so easy to apply. Really helping with itching, and she slept 12hours last night, which never happens! Hope your little one is doing ok today.

ValiumQueen · 14/07/2012 10:59

X-post with Angel. I will bear that in mind if it no longer works, thank you!

ValiumQueen · 14/07/2012 11:04

Just googled images too. Made me want to cry, some are really horrific!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/07/2012 11:06

A friend of mine suggested the foam as it worked a treat on her two DCs but couldn't remember what it was called and the pharmacist didn't know either - I should have consulted mumsnet!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/07/2012 11:08

Hate to say it Handsfull but I thought my DD had a mild dose until day 3! That was not a good day.

ThePhantomPlopper · 14/07/2012 11:23

My 2yo came out with spots this morning. Only has 8 spots so far and she was fine until 5 minutes ago but is now crying and holding her ear.

Need to go out and get supplies but DH is away doing Olympic security! Fantastic timing.

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 14/07/2012 18:56

Angels - I have got a feeling that day 3 may be a bad day here, both boys went to bed hot, grumpy and "offish."
Good Luck to the other pox ridden families Smile

Oh dear - hope they get a comfortable nights sleep!

Day 4 was loads better thanks to the tea tree in the bath and the witch hazel and tea tree cream Smile

mum2twoloudbabies · 14/07/2012 22:02

We're pox ridden too. Dd(4) is head to toe spots including inbetween toes, i feel so sorry for her. so far chloraphenamine, paracetamol and oats in the bath. Still not working but we're on day 3 so fingers crossed for tomorrow. if not I'm off for some poxclin mousse. How long do they have to be quarantined for?

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 14/07/2012 22:04

Thanks Angels, they are both a bit restless and seem feverish with out the high temp iyswim. It is all quiet now so fingers crossed.

2am and been up with poxy one since 11.30. Perhaps the lotion is not the miracle I thought it was. Will get the stuff angel recommended tomorrow. Still at least I will know for the next baby. Loads more blisters overnight, especially in her hair and on her bottom. Poor little scrap. Hope you are having a better night handsfull

ThePhantomPlopper · 15/07/2012 06:49

My 4 year old has a temp, headache and just been sick (teeny bit) wondering if she's coming down with it or it's just some random virus rearing it's head at the worst possible time.

Poxy one was unsettled but slept most of the night, she's scratching her head but doesn't seem to have anymore spots on her body.

Hope you all managed a peaceful(ish) night.

hairtwiddler · 15/07/2012 07:06

ds just getting over his pox too. He was covered bless him and spots took three days to appear. He was only slighty unwell on the second day but itchy.

Best tip I had this time (dd had it in 2009) was sudocrem to dry out the spots. Oats n bath also great. Aqueous cream with calamine better in earlier stages.

ValiumQueen · 15/07/2012 07:31

Morning! Quite a few of us suffering then. I will try sudocream as day 3 today and very weepy spots. Thank you for that tip. She fell asleep at about 4.30 and slept until 7, so I napped alongside her. Loads more spots. It is horrid seeing them in pain and their beautiful little bodies being marked.

Not sure how effective the ViraSoothe was overnight, but again I don't know how she would have been without it.

Her appetite is unchanged, and thankfully so far only a low temperature.

ValiumQueen · 15/07/2012 07:34

phantom hope your elder DD does get it so as to get it out of the way. Hope it is nothing else as a vomiting bug would confuse the situation further. Hope the poxy one is on the mend soon.
