I think a distorted picture may be being painted

I was once given a £1 and a cornish pasty "for me" by the Salvation Army as i sat in a shop doorway surrounded by bags (had been shopping). Aside from this-no.

Debbiethemum · 21/06/2007 10:32

Only ever had positive comments, never a negative one.

fennel · 21/06/2007 10:33

No. I bf 3 all over the place and can't recall any negative comments. I did get some surprised or unsure reactions. A teenage nephew, who was trying to chat in sophisticated adult way at a party, raced from the room when I started feeding the baby. And people at work did sort of wince at the mention of expressing.

pooka · 21/06/2007 10:33

I find myself arranging my face so I couldn't be thought to be diapproving when looking at a b'feeding mum, look kind of loopy. I think it's lovely and only got comments from people I know.

mrsmalumbas · 21/06/2007 10:33

Never had any nasty comments but I did not tend to nurse much in public to be honest - too embarassed with my 34J boobs on show. So I did used to retreat to "mother and baby rooms" when out and about shopping etc. Especially as I lived in Asia and breastfeeding rates are very low there anyway. Since back in the UK I haven't really had occasion to feed in public as it's really just a morning and bedtime thing. I have had a few people express surprise (and a bit of disgust) if they find out I am still bf at 30 months. To be honest I don't tend to tell people in RL because there is that slightly horrified reaction you get.

Mrscarrot · 21/06/2007 10:36

Only positive ones, and I'm on my third round.

I think some people may have come to sit near me and chosen a different table when they noticed, not really obviously, but sort of! Usually an older couple though.

hannahsaunt · 21/06/2007 10:37

Fed anywhere and everywhere with both (and bf until 9mo and 13mo respectively) with no comments, funny looks or anything. It was a great experience. Hoping for the same third time round.

evenhope · 21/06/2007 10:40

Fed 4 for 15 months each, and currently 14 wks into no 5

I always expect comments but have never actually had any. Interesting idea about the "looks".

The only comments I get are from my mum and the DSs "feeding again?!"

Polgara2 · 21/06/2007 10:41

Nope, never.

Fossil · 21/06/2007 10:43

I never did. I think the whole thing is blown out of proportion anyway. I can't imagine ever saying anything to someone else about it.

Hathor · 21/06/2007 10:46

No, never. And I don't know anyone who has.
Have done it in pubs, parks, office, outdoor cafes. Never hidden in a toilet, or babychanging room.
Maybe the problem is our own embarrassment and expectation that we are doing something that people might be shocked by.

Chirpygirl · 21/06/2007 10:48

Never had one aimed at me, did have someone asked to leave a cafe for complaining about me to management though!
Have been given numerous glasses of water while feeding as well...

stleger · 21/06/2007 10:49

No comments that were negative, but one teary eyed dad on the riverbank in Cambridge.

tibsy · 21/06/2007 10:54

i agree Hathor i think it helps to be positive, if people can sense you feel uncertain, theyre more likely to pass comment i think
chirpygirl -
stleger - ahhhhhh

bohemianbint · 21/06/2007 10:56

All the comments I've had have been from family.

Pannacotta · 21/06/2007 10:57

NO negative comments for me either with DS1, but few friends who would often ask me when I was going to give up (fed him till he was 2).
Have noteiced that nearly all of the neg things for everyone have been to do with mothers/friends, how weird is that?!

Anna8888 · 21/06/2007 11:00

Yes, my mother finds it a bit weird (and says so) that my sister and I carry on breastfeeding for so long. It's a generational thing. But since the children are all very healthy and developing well (whereas my non-breast fed sister was terribly ill as a baby) she doesn't complain too much...

SoupDragon · 21/06/2007 11:01

None, and I've fed 3 SmallDragons.

OrmIrian · 21/06/2007 11:01

Never. Not one. I was very shy about it to start with but stopped being so quite soon when I realised that most people didn't notice and those that did were positive about it, or indifferent.

Lizzylou · 21/06/2007 11:02

NO negative comments here, I found that my MIL was rather uncomfortable with me BF'ing in front of her with DS1 and I was a bit too, with DS2 I got sick of missing out and was better at hiding my huge chest, so fed him wherever/whenever

NormaStanleyFletcher · 21/06/2007 11:05

WHat a good thread

Never had any problems / comments

thequeenofcontradiction · 21/06/2007 11:06

No negative comments for me either, but I've seen loads of people bf in public around here. We are soon to be moving in with my parents up north while we wait to emigrate to Australia - it will be interesting to see if it's any different, especially as my mum says she has NEVER seen anyone bf in public where she lives.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 21/06/2007 11:18

not me -- only nice things

lyra41 · 21/06/2007 11:43

nope, just positive stuff.

cba · 21/06/2007 11:44

never any nasty comments, I breastfed everywhere.

caughtintheact · 21/06/2007 11:49

no comments to me in 10 months...either positive or negative
