I think a distorted picture may be being painted

I was once given a £1 and a cornish pasty "for me" by the Salvation Army as i sat in a shop doorway surrounded by bags (had been shopping). Aside from this-no.

Me. My mum and my best friend complained loads, but strangers were always restrained or kind.

MuminBrum · 21/06/2007 10:04

The only time anyone ever said anything was in the M&S in Birmingham which is quite big. There are chairs outside the lingerie fitting rooms on the first floor for dejected husbands to sit on and I was sitting on one of those feeding. The woman in charge of the fitting rooms said "there is a feeding room on the to floor, you know" and I said "I know but I don't feel like trailing a hungry baby all the way to the top floor so I can sit in a stuffy cupboard with a nappy bin for company". She gave me a bit of a cat's bottom but didn't press any further!
Other than that, I only ever got complicit smiles from other women, and the occasional misty look from soppy men, and I breastfed anywhere and everywhere for 18 months.

pavlovthecat · 21/06/2007 10:04

I did bf in public in USa, and got some strang looks, felt a bit uncomfortable in some places there. It was thw backwater...

mumzarello · 21/06/2007 10:05

Never from me either - never used my carefully prepared retorts yet!!!

elkiedee · 21/06/2007 10:11

Surely they shouldn't be embarrassed in lingerie? Mind you I wasn't impressed by their stock of maternity undies, and that was in Leeds, a big store. No choice of colours or matching knickers...

damewashalot · 21/06/2007 10:15

None ever and have fed 3 babies all sorts of places don't think people notice most of the time but then I'm not one to get my boobs out and wave them about

lilymolly · 21/06/2007 10:16

never, people won't have dared
got some nice comments thought

pollyanna · 21/06/2007 10:17

me, none at all and have breastfed 4 children for well over a year each.

mumto3girls · 21/06/2007 10:18

Never and have bared my boobs just about everywhere...had more tuts and anxious looks from my mother rather than strangers tbh

purplemonkeydishwasher · 21/06/2007 10:18

none here!

ProfYaffle · 21/06/2007 10:18

Never. Have bf 2 dd's anywhere and everywhere.

pageturner · 21/06/2007 10:19

Never. I bf three babies up to a year wherever I needed to, and never a word.

bozza · 21/06/2007 10:19

Me, usually no comments at all, but the odd positive one, or people asking if I want something (eg more comfy chair, drink etc).

theUrbanDryad · 21/06/2007 10:21

i have had more smiles and positive comments that negative. i remember a lady coming up to me while i was feeding in a motorway service station and i steeled myself for a fight, and she said "Oh it is lovely to see you doing that!"

i do think it's sad, though, that we feel we have to prepare ourselves for negative comments. wouldn't it be lovely if we could see someone coming over to us while we were bf-ing, and the thought that they might be negative not even cross our minds?

StifflersMom · 21/06/2007 10:22

Me! People have stared/glared but no one ever had the gall to say anything. And fed DS2 for 2 years!

TigerFeetFormerlyCheesyFeet · 21/06/2007 10:24

I never had any comments at all, negative or positive.

A friend of mine was bfing in a cafe once and (her description) a po-faced mad old bat bore down upon her - she was expecting a tirade of abuse but the woman told her that it was wonderful to see and more people should do it

BikeBug · 21/06/2007 10:25

No problems at all in 15 months of bfing anywhere. Only place I felt slightly uncomfortable was in a hospital waiting area (childrens hospital), where I felt like the most interesting thing in a very dull room, but still no comments or complaints, just a bit more looking than I was comfortable with.

bozza · 21/06/2007 10:26

I think olive's comments are good. I am one like that. I do miss having a baby and feeding, but you have to call a halt somewhere, so I do get a bit nostalgic. Got a tiny nephew atm though.

Good idea for a myth debunking thread though.

Marmite · 21/06/2007 10:26

Nothing has ever been said to me. Haven't really felt like anyone was staring at me either. All positive here!

pooka · 21/06/2007 10:26

Only positive comments here. From strangers at least.
Was shocked at negative comments from friend though.

hana · 21/06/2007 10:27

me
never
have had some nice comments
I've fed wherever I've wanted, it's been fine

always ready for a fight though!

LaDiDaDi · 21/06/2007 10:29

Never, though I did have some comebacks up my sleeve in case I did get any negative comments but I never got a chance to use them.

ekra · 21/06/2007 10:29

Never.

mozhe · 21/06/2007 10:30

Never...and I have fed 5,( sometimes in public, and when thaey are toddlers too...)....only comments have been +++ Things like ' well done you ' and ' that's lovely ' etc....or just nice smiles....

TigerFeetFormerlyCheesyFeet · 21/06/2007 10:31

I do find myself looking at bfing mothers. I find it such a wonderful beautiful thing that I just can't help it. I hope none of them saw me and thought I was disapproving
