I think a distorted picture may be being painted

I was once given a £1 and a cornish pasty "for me" by the Salvation Army as i sat in a shop doorway surrounded by bags (had been shopping). Aside from this-no.

I never did. Breast fed 4 babies and was totally blatant and open about it.

I did, however, get lots of looks from men - filthy buggers.

Anyone else outraged by a small article in the Sunday Times about this? hang on, will find and post it.

fishie · 21/06/2007 09:42

strangers no
friends have been a bit odd

fillyjonk · 21/06/2007 09:42

"I do however think people imagine that people staring are thinking "FGS cover up woman" when in fact they may be thinking "awwwwww how lovely, good god I am broody, I had better avert my eyes" "

yes i really agree with this

i steeled myself for a fight more than once in the early days.

the only time i had anything close to a "comment" was when an old lady said , when DS had finished "Oh GOOD, its so LOVELY to see them enjoying their food but I did want to see his lovely face".

then she told me that she had bf all 6 of her children while living alone in the australian outback and i felt inadequte

goingfor3 · 21/06/2007 09:43

I never have.

serenity · 21/06/2007 09:43

No, bf all three and never had problems in public from strangers. All the disapproving glances I got were from people I knew, who should have known better!

prettymum · 21/06/2007 09:45

never did! had to breast feed dd when she was only few weeks in a queue in a bank, she was slurping away and a man and woman next to me told me it was good people were stil breastfeeding!

lyrabelacqua · 21/06/2007 09:45

Never had a negative comment and i bf (discreetly) all over the place.

RedTartanLass · 21/06/2007 09:45

Never ever had a negative comment, have also breasfed in Egypt, Maldives and France. I have fed in airports, busy cafes, leisure centres and dentist waiting rooms.

I was the worse breastfeeder in the world, was not a natural thing for me, always took ages to get me and baby comfy. SO was not the most discreet of breasfeeders, but once we were settled, I normally covered my shoulder with a scarf or a towel if we were down the beach.

DumbledoresGirl · 21/06/2007 09:45

This article here:

New mothers will soon be able to breastfeed in public without the slightest hint of a tut from onlookers. The right to breastfeed in shops, cafes and public transport will be included in changes to sex discrimination laws.

The Single Equality Bill aims to streamline all the various areas of discrimination law. It will stop golf clubs banning women from bars and mean that landlords will no longer be able to refuse to install facilities for disabled people. Angela Smith, minister at the Department of Communities, said of breastfeeding: ?It is ridiculous that while newsagents have all varieties of breasts on display, women discreetly feeding their babies can be asked to leave the premises.?

Quite right, too, although surely that logic means that it will be okay to go topless in WH Smith.

It is the last bit that enrages me: the equating of breast feeding with going topless. Only a man could write that. they are not the same things at al!

RedLorryYellowLorry · 21/06/2007 09:47

Never had any from strangers. Only comment I ever got was from SIL saying it was disgusting and shuddering but then I just laughed as she's thick.

pavlovthecat · 21/06/2007 09:48

PM - thats the kind of thing I got, if anything, or women in their 50's/60's saying, 'I wish I had been able to do that with mine, good for you' .

cathcart · 21/06/2007 09:51

pav was it you that had that nice lady lean right in and stroke dd's cheeck whilst you bf? that was a lovely story

tibsy · 21/06/2007 09:53

never had any negative comments myself had a few smiles tho, along the lines of ahhh how lovely!!!

Anna8888 · 21/06/2007 09:53

No, never. I've fed in England, France, Belgium, Holland, Portugal and Italy. In public, in private.

Lilliput · 21/06/2007 09:54

Never

remember getting a train with ds when he was absolutely screaming and feeding him on and off all the journey - two men in suits went upn and down to the buffet for me to get tea, water etc.

harpsichordcuddler · 21/06/2007 09:56

no and believe me I have fed everywhere
sometimes people have looked but as olive says it isn't really possible to tell why they are looking., they might be just curious. or approving. I generally choose to believe one f those two

puddle · 21/06/2007 09:56

I never really cared about people looking\ TBH I look at b-feeding women too - in a 'how lovely' and slightly envious sort of way.

robinpud · 21/06/2007 09:57

pas de problemo here also

Firepile · 21/06/2007 09:58

No negative comments at all on bf in public after 16 months (live in Scotland, but have also fed alot in England).

ghosty · 21/06/2007 09:58

was too scared and a bit PND crazy with DS to attempt it
never had a problem with DD.

bobsmum · 21/06/2007 10:00

Never. Bf ds in Herts for 2 years then dd for 2 years in West of Scotland, where there are 8 breastfeeding mums in total

bobsmum · 21/06/2007 10:00
