My friend gave birth to a Down's boy who had real problems with his little legs (many operations to straighten them) and is profoundly deaf. My friend has subsequently adopted a Down's girl and the pair of them are absolutely adorable. The boy is 5 now and seems to have a relatively high IQ and as well as signing fluently he can sing as well . The girl is too little yet so there's no knowing, but the point is that they have a wonderful family life and seem blissfully happy. Just a different flavour of children, not disabled or abnormal or anything like that.

If you had asked me a few years ago about having a Down's baby I would have said no thanks not for me, but seeing my friend and her amazing little family unit has really made me grow up and change my 'chood on this.

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 25/03/2010 14:12

rots everyone knows you can't knit lentils - strictly macrame only.

skihorse · 25/03/2010 14:14

pandy Selling horses is a massive pita. The family who took Ginger on trial last year sent her home after a week because "she makes funny noises when she eats". They had 6 kids between 2 and 15 and said they trusted her implicitly with the kids but that eating sound... Fucking nutters.

You're supposed to help silver wrt where to go for an early scan (in Bucks) and which hospitals don't have fucking awful reputations.

carrots That's just like the sling (premaxx) that I'll be getting. Sorry, but I just don't buy all the bullshit hysteria. Children die in car accidents too - are you going to get rid of your car?

OP posts:
skihorse · 25/03/2010 14:15

PS pandy I'd tell him to bum off - cheshire for a day out with hounds is utter madness!

Ski, re NF story - exact same thing happened with my sister's first baby. Coupla tests said high chance of Down's. She was v young (married at 19, got diffed straight away) and the midwife was quite pushy (I'm sure just trying to do her best etc. etc.) and said, you're young yet, get a quick termination and try again. Sister decided against it - baby fine.

Thought that was a one-off!

rollerbaby · 25/03/2010 14:22

Silver do you live anywhere near Amersham? There's a private BMI hospital called the Chiltern just outside of Amersham which you could try btw.

rollerbaby · 25/03/2010 14:24

Sorry bangy for your droid. Get yourself some preseed and a coupla bottles of wine for next month.

CUNextTuesday · 25/03/2010 14:27

What colour Premaxx are you getting ski?

We don't want to clash.

skihorse · 25/03/2010 14:31

headbanger Twatting twats! Surely it must cost more to do a termination than to do the further test? Absolute bastards. Are you definitely droiding or can you lurk longer? If it's definitely droid then can I recommend doing something with your spare room? E.g., getting a lodger to tempt baybee of inconvenience. I red of Aries having a meltdown this morning - I got my BFP 2 weeks after moving in to a 1-bed flat. Oh and we've got no bloody money either what with i) stupid court case and ii) stupid horse (vet bills).

cunty I'll be getting whichever one is cheapest on ebay, but I do like the stripey one, actually I like pretty much all of them.

OP posts:
iggypiggy · 25/03/2010 14:31

Fanks rots is good to hear sling recommendations

I know the hoss will have fun doing the pony club stuff - is really just what he needs as although he is 8 this year (I bought him as a v. green 5 yr old) he could do with no big pressure just lots of fun jumping/ rallies/ mad hacks etc just to really get him established...

Ski they do pony club camp thinsg for adults too - think is called horse camp? But obv is in the UK...

skihorse · 25/03/2010 14:33

cunty Oh and of course my mum is making one. So complete with 1970s style itchy-wool baybee bonnet I'll also have a sling which she's possibly made from a pair of dad's old pyjamas. Thank the lord Julian isn't going in to fashion (as per his dad).

OP posts:
CUNextTuesday · 25/03/2010 14:37

Hom won't touch that stripey one with someone elses. I think the navy blue/grey one is the way forward for shared parenting responsibilities

iggypiggy · 25/03/2010 14:38

banger you always welcome to lurk / post here Sorry bout droidage BESHlet

CUNextTuesday · 25/03/2010 14:38

Oh chuck, my mum's coming down at easter bringing some hand made articles, including fleecey suits for winter. Must take pic and post somewhere - they are adorable (one in red for xmas, one in bright orange for hallowe'en )

Headbanger · 25/03/2010 14:46

Ski I have now had three BFNs. The first two were plainly too early (this is natural blonde hair, you know, with all the idiocy that that implies!). The third was this morning. I'm due Sunday and it was First Response, so yar, game over I think. It's just because of the slight bleed 6DPO I'd convinced meself innit.

I could probably convince myself that the spotting now is too early to be droid but, meh, can't summon the energy some'ow, and I have all other PMT symptoms. Onward! Onward!

honeymoo I fink I may do just that. Poor OM is a total girl when it comes to SWI (he actually has to be all, you know, loved up, and spend an hour at it. FFS! What's wrong with a quick knee-trembler before work?!) and I will do anything, including Spanish Fly, to get him a bit more reckless and speedy...

Fanks iggy. I am a fifth former with a crush on the glamorous girls of the Upper Sixth

skihorse · 25/03/2010 14:55

banger So you tested a whole 4 days early? Well... you're certainly menkul enough for admittance. FR have a bad reputation anyway, have you tried doing a line with biro to cheer yourself up? Have you burst in to tears about anything ridiculous? That seems to be a fairly accurate early-warning signal.

cunty Hmmn, I fear you're right. Jailbait would probably prefer something more manly so he doesn't look "gay". I look forward to seeing Rastus dressed up like a mini-santa complete with comedy beard and stuffed reindeer !

OP posts:
iggypiggy · 25/03/2010 14:57

cunts we are also going with the black/ grey option - and possibly the ergo 'sport' for a more manly carrier - although bloke insists he doesn't care what he looks like carrying it..

pandora69 · 25/03/2010 14:59

Ah right! Firstly, avoid Royal Berks hospital like the plague. They nearly killed me and DD, and sent my mum home with a snapped in two tib and fib (from the orthrapaedics dept, obviously, not the obstetrics dept!) that they hadn't notice wasn't set straight. I hate that place! Up around the rest of Bucks, I don't really know.

Places for a scan though, that you can walk in with hay hanging out of your pants - we went to this place. Fabby fabby fab fab! We had a scan at 12 weeks there (£180) and she went through everything - dating, NF, bloods were tested too, she looked at all the structures, and she was even 80% sure she could tell the sex (we were a bit further along than we thought we were though, and she did say that it was unusual and she couldn't guarantee anything. ) We are going back at 25 weeks with DD to see the baby in mummy's tummy

As for horsey bloke - am just about to call him now to tell him he comes here or not at all.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 25/03/2010 15:01

head But stick around if you feel up to it.

ski I just don't like that kind of sling anyway, as I don't find it adjustable or comfortable. I don't think the babies look comfortable either. I can see the logic in its design flaw but if I really liked it it wouldn't stop me buying it, I would just be very aware of the baby. You know my feelings on risk awareness... as you say there are much more dangerous things. BUT knowing a product's faults and therefore being aware of what you need to do is enough for me to be happy with it if I really wanted it.

Headbanger · 25/03/2010 15:02

I just put a red biro in my handbag. When I get home Imma dig all them pissy sticks out of the kitchen bin, draw on another line, put them on the floor & sit staring at them, rocking back & forth & humming the Brahms lullaby.

(Plus, I didn't know it was menkul I PROMISE! I just read the packet. The one with SIX DAYS written all over it in big massive fuck-off letters. The OM says no more piss-sticks. He says why spend good money on it when nature has her own preggo tester, viz., marked absence of haemorraghing (sp.?) from the genitular area).

pandora69 · 25/03/2010 15:02

PS - slings, couldn't use one to start with due to C section, and then couldn't get to grips with a ring sling. But then at about 10 weeks we got a Babyhawk and I love it! Very comfortable, you can use it front and back, I still carry DD in it now every now and again. I say it - I mean them Well, you have to get them in a few different colours, don't you? and the ones with the minkee lining...

skihorse · 25/03/2010 15:13

From my pov carrots, you're getting het up about a risk which has killed 20 babies in 14 years in the US. According to the US gov website there were 4,317,119 births in the US in 2007. Let us be generous and say there have been 3.8 million births in the US per year on average for the past 14. That makes 53.2 million babies. 20 have died. That is a 1 in 2.66 million chance. You have drunk alcohol, eaten cheese and meats on the banned list and you will continue to drive your car. It's illogical.
