Rots I go to Africa all the time with work, and while you are right not to be taking baby, you could go for just a couple of days when he is old enough to leave with someone. My mum looks after my daughter when I am at work, and has done since she was 10 months old. Obviously we are all very happy with this set-up (except when me and my mum have an argument about something daft like chickens and then don't talk for a week .) I only go to Africa on 3-5 days trips, and it would be easy to store enough breastmilk for that duration. I don't take anti-malarials - you just couldn't for the number of times I am backwards and forwards out there. Now I wouldn't normally encourage people to go to Africa without good protection. (My dad is married to a Kenyan lady and somehow thinks that gives him some kind of voodoo protection! Stupid man!)
You do have an option - do what we do on trips - cover yourself in DEET (not nice stuff, I know, but not nearly as bad as malaria,) wear long sleeved and long trouser clothing dawn and dusk, and only sleep in an airconditioned room with the windows closed. Keep the aircon on all the time, and about an hour before you go to bed use a knockdown insect spray. Sleep under a permethrin soaked mozzie net. This has done me well over the years, and I have done such daft things as sleep in a hut on the beach in Tanzania, malaria capital of the world!
It's not a guaranteed way to not get malaria, but then again you can still get malaria even when you are taking the tablets. But only you can make the decision. I suppose I'm trying to say you can be a good mother and still have a little go at the things YOU want to do. At some point in the first 4 years of his life you will have to leave him with relatives for a little bit! You might as well enjoy it!
What charity do you support in Mozambique? I go to a slum project and nursery school in Kampala in Uganda. It's terribly sad, but I love the optimism and attitiude of the people there and try and do what little bit I can to help.
As for the horse - I have 2 gentlemen coming to see him today who sound a bit more normal. They are both older men who have dodgy knees who are looking for a big hunter that will look after them out hunting and hacking. Sound just the job. Weirdly, one of them was relieved to hear he hadn't been sold, because he had called about 2 other horses and been told they had been sold unseen to a man who fitted the weirdo master's description. Something fishy going on!
Silver you didn't miss anything by not riding yesterday - the weather was crap.
