oh... posting from the US in case you all think I'm on some far flung tropical island without chip shops!

Gracie123 · 23/11/2009 22:00

don't they have chips in the US?

WhatSheSaid · 23/11/2009 22:11

Gracie- I had an em c/s with dd and I'm not really tempted by a VBAC. I suppose I just think if the chances of me going through labour and ending up with another em c/s are high, I'd rather just cut out the labour bit and go for an elective c/s!

I haven't spoken to any midwives/drs about it yet but I'm guessing my chances of being offered an elective c/s are reasonable - I'll be 39 when this dc is born, have already had one c/s and have high blood pressure that has to be monitored and treated throughout pg and means I can't go overdue. Also, the dr who performed the c/s told me (a couple of days later) they reckoned they had about 20 mins to safely get dd out - I don't know if I want to be that close to things going wrong again.

Although it was a bit scary, the actual c/s was fine and I had my own room and bathroom at the hospital and good care from the midwives so it wasn't too bad - my only worry is looking after toddler dd after a c/s. Though I know people who have had both em c/s and elective c/s and they say an elective is a lot easier to recover from!

And after weeks of feeling OK I now feel really sick and tired, at least I'm at home and can slob about in pjs. Poor dd is getting rather a lot of DVDs, not that she's complaining. Roll on 11 weeks (that's when the nausea stopped last time). Only 3 and a half weeks to go...

Irishfairy · 23/11/2009 23:04

Hi everyone...

misswoowoo and randomama sending positive wishes your way, hope you both get good news...

kittykat77 I'm with you on the tight clothes... I'm almost 8 weeks and by early afternoon get really bloated and by evening my tummy sticks right out! Since I mostly wear tights and dresses or leggings and long tops I've been okay comfort wise but sure people are going to start guessing... or maybe they'll just think I'm over eating!

Are you Irish tjtheminx? My DH is from the US and we lived in Boston for 2 years. I'm Irish (hence the name) but live in the UK now... we're heading back to Ireland for Christmas too I know exactly what you mean about the lack of chippers... Gracie123 while there are thousands of places in the US you can get greasy, deep fried food, none of them come close to a chippy chips and there is no such thing as malt vinegar
...great, now I have a craving for salt and vinegar chips!!!

Hi all. I just got my BFP this morning on CD42 day before AF is due. My CB digi says Pregnant 1-2 I am so, so, so happy but, also scared as, I have had 2 m/c's. I will be going to my Dr's this evening and, will ask for an early scan but, I will refuse to go to an antenatal appointment until I have passed the 8wk since my last period mark as, that is when I have had my other m/c's. Not sure weather I will be due July or August due to my stupid long cycle. Last period was 14/10 so, going by that I would be due 21/07 but, going by when I had my Peak on my CBFM which was CD29 I will be due on 04/08. I know my Dr's will go by my LMP until I have had a scan. Hope everyone is doing ok and not too tired. I've just realised I have 5wks to do my Christmas shopping in and, I've just found out I'm up the duff! I'm knackered just thinking about it!

mumtoo3 · 24/11/2009 07:54

Is anyone else finding it hard to know what to eat? I think I know what I fancy take a mouthful and yuck! This morning had a crumpet(gluten free and dairy free -allergies!) and the salt in it was horrid - had to have a yog to get rid of the high salt taste, I do have to point out I ate the same ones in October and loved them! so who knows!!!!

This time is very strange, its a cross between ds and dd2 who knows may be twins!!!!

how is everyone today?

Sending positive vibes to one and all

Chulita · 24/11/2009 08:15

I'm only 5+2 so not feeling sick or craving anything, I do seem to want to eat all the time though. I think it's due to the baby taste, I just want to eat stuff to get rid of it! I'm really hoping ms doesn't kick in, I'm enjoying being normal. I really went off DH's smell with DD, in that if he came near me I'd have to go and throw up. It did rather dampen any snogging sessions I'm a bit worried that might happen with DD...I'd be proper stuffed if her smell made me throw up - fingers crossed that never happens! My stomach already looks fat - why? I'm only 5wks pg!

I nearly threw up on a guy at church who lent too close to help me with a bag on sunday. Very embarrassing. I've never noticed his aftershave before but on sunday it was pungent.

whatshesaid I had em c/s too. DS heart stopped, then mine did (under general anaesthetic) had loads of transfusions and was in surgery for 5 hours after DS was safely handed to DH because Dr couldn't find where I was still bleeding from after stitch up.

I guess my feeling is 'what are the chances that it would happen again?'

It feels unlikely, but maybe I am being naive. I have a real phobia of having the c/s whilst awake though (very frightened of surgery on TV etc...) so I guess what I'm hoping for is that even if the VBAC fails, at least I'll be given a general anaesthetic again...

Chulita · 24/11/2009 09:47

Gracie I had emcs with a spinal so I was awake and it was 'fine'...as far as a cs can be 'fine' I couldn't feel anything below my boobs and I was really shaky from the drugs/knackered from 6 day labour/relieved it was all going to be over that it was fine. It was nice to see DD as soon as they'd popped her out and once she'd been checked DH got to hold her sitting next to me so I watched her while they finished what they needed to. If I had to choose GA or awake I'd definitely choose to be awake because it's so surreal, you can't see anything and they just get on with it. And you get to see your LO right after she's been born

Gracie123 · 24/11/2009 10:18

I know that makes sense, and everyone tells me it is much better, I just can't imagine it. I'm the kind of girl that GP prescribes valium for a blood test. I really hate drs and hospitals, and would have a home birth if I could, but think it is too dangerous living so far away from the hospital.

Also, my sister said 2nd C/s was much worse than the first, and I will have a 2.5yo DS to deal with as well. We don't live near family, so the likelihood of getting any help beyond the first 2 days are slim to none.

I may search out a VBAC thread and read some other peoples experiences. I don't want to make any silly decisions that would put LO in danger, but also don't want to have any uneccessary medical intervention IYSWIM

violetbubbles · 24/11/2009 10:18

Got my blood test results back yesterday-I am very anemic. Iron count level is very low (3) and Hb level is 8.4. Been prescribed iron tablets and told to return in 3 weeks for another blood test. I hope me being anemic doesn't have an adverse effect on my little bean! I'm very grateful to the nurse that had the presence of mind to check for anemia though as it means it's been caught early and can be treated simply!

I know what you mean mumtoo3 as I'm struggling with food too. DH asked me at 8.30am this morning if I knew what I wanted for dinner tonight (he has taken to stopping by Sainsbury's on the way home from work to satisfy my food cravings) and I felt instantly sick just thinking about dinner time. Last night I had spaghetti with a tin of chopped tomatoes on top and a sprinkle of basil. This is my attempt at being healthy! Oh, I also discovered the wonder of Rich Tea biscuits. Was feeling really sick last night about 10pm, had one in bed and was able to get to sleep!

Glad to see I'm not the only one craving chippy chips with lots of salt and malt vinegar! Trying to limit myself to one bag at the weekend!

Oh, before I forget - a big warm welcome to all of the new BFPs! [waves]

x

Gracie123 · 24/11/2009 10:27

Violet - not sure about you, but the iron tablets made my morning sickness horrendous with DS1. So bad that I was hospitalised several time. In the end MW decided that if I was vomiting them straight away, there was no point in taking them (it was making me worse!!)

She recommended SpaTone which you can buy in larger boots stores, or order online. It really helped (although it tastes foul, if you keep it in the fridge you can down a sachet without tasting it too much) and it's much gentler on your stomach.

Gracie123 · 24/11/2009 10:28

p.s. also, make sure you take your iron supplements with vit c such as freash orange juice. It helps you absorb more of the iron.

Dairy inhibits iron uptake, so don't have any milk/cheese/yoghurt for at least 30 mins before/after taking it.

CurlyCasper · 24/11/2009 10:31

violet, I've been anaemic half my life and the iron tablets control it just fine you and bean will not suffer.

Sorry for my ignorance but can someone interprey VBAC please? ta

Gracie123 · 24/11/2009 10:48

Vaginal Birth After C-section.

skihorse · 24/11/2009 10:49

I'm just back from the midwife, didn't get scanned this morning, boo hiss, official scan will be 23rd Dec. I've gone for a home birth and they didn't even try and talk me in to a hospital birth thank god!

CurlyCasper · 24/11/2009 11:00

additional boo re scan ski, but with a yeay for your home birth!

Thanks grace - all makes sense now.

summerymummy · 24/11/2009 11:29

hi all, just wanted to introduce myself as another july 2010 mummy, i'm 5 weeks today, woohoo!! due 27th July. I am feeling horrendously sick and am spending as much time horizontal as poss atm, and i swear i have a huge tummy already, how is that possible?! argh

Gracie123 · 24/11/2009 11:35

Congrats summerymummy. My tummy is huge already too. I tried my old maternity pants on today and realised with horror that everyone would know I was pregnant if I wore them (bump accentuating waist band) so back to my much less comfortable jeans
I'm sick too, and incredibly bloated. Fortunately ds is very sympathetic. Dh told him I wasn't feeling well, so he has spent lots of time this week patting my head and saying "all better now mummy"

givecarrotsachance · 24/11/2009 12:31

gracie very cute DS! We're not telling ours (5 yrs) until we've gone past all NF testing, 12 weeks etc as I think he'd be devastated if it didn't work out and he's old enough to understand.

VRT a VBAC, clearly it's usually the best option for yours and the baby's health if everything else is ok so why not find out as much as possible about your last C-section, if you've not already done so, to find out what went wrong and whether there's a chance of it happening again? Sometimes these things are just bad luck and it's not going to impact a future pregnancy/labour. At least then you would know more about your options. Sorry if you've already done this!

violet sorry to hear that. Iron tablets may also block you up so loads of fruit and veg . If you can stomach it, eating loads and loads of high-iron veg works better than tablets anyway.

Spirael · 24/11/2009 12:37

Afternoon all. I've had problems with reoccuring anaemia too, probably because I'm not a huge fan of red meats. I warned the MW about it and they're going to do a blood test next time they see me, in a couple of weeks. In the meantime I've picked up some Spatone and started taking one sachet per day - though I'll up it to two if my counts are low when they're tested.

I don't find Spatone tastes too bad, to be honest. Slightly metallic when mixed with my lemon squash, but no worse than the slight metallic twang of the sweetener. I was worried about taking my first one yesterday in case it made me retch, but fortunately I was fine. I was expecting the taste to be like soluble paracetamol or something!

Morning sickness seems to have finally arrived for me, at 5 weeks and 2 days. Ah well, at least it helps remind me that I'm definitely pregnant! I keep forgetting. I haven't thrown up or felt like I'm about to, it's just that my stomach feels uncomfortable and unsettled. Hopefully it'll stay at that level and get no worse, then disappear in time for Christmas.

As other people have mentioned, eating seems to help... I might have to start bringing more nibbly food to work to stop my stomach from getting too empty ahead of lunchtime or the end of the day.

I hope everyone else is doing ok today.

givecarrotsachance · 24/11/2009 12:50

Feeling like an absolute air-head today, like I'm walking through treacle. I had more energy - but more nausea - this morning and a colleague saying she's going to "have a word" with one of the lads who uses too much loo paper and it backed up to the ladies nearly totally outed me! Eewwww.

Also last night I didn't appreciate Jimmy's Farm which we'd taped from last week. He was making potato snacks from potato starch stuff - really horrible looking - which had me retching at 10pm last night. That sort of stuff never even touches me - I am just not one to get a stomach turn from anything - cripes we saw an enormous elephant carcass in Kenya in August, which had been lying in the sun for a month, and I just thought it was really, really sad. Didn't touch me (stomach-wise anyway). And now I'm retching over a TV programme which isn't even icky? .

Who else is going for early scans? Any suggestions at the best time? There's no point going too early, of course, but then leave it too long and you may as well wait for 12 weeks.
