I planned a home birth for DD but it went a bit wrong and she ended up being ECS. We now live 30 mins away from the nearest hospital so much as I would love to try for HB again, what with emergency care being so far away and having had a previous CS, I think it'd be safer to go in Good luck to those planning one though! (I've got a Birth Pool in a Box sat in the cupboard...)
I'm 5+1 and no symptoms yet, with DD I felt like I had food poisoning from 2 wks til 24 wks so to be at 5 wks with no nausea yet is very odd. Still don't feel pg!
Sympathies to all those with hyperemesis, I feel your pain.
I am absolutely knackered, DD was up and ready to go at 0430 this morning...I'd like to spend the day snuggled on the sofa but a 12 month old doesn't stop for a tired mum [bleary]

Glad everything went ok telling your boss, CurlyCasper. Hope the next one went ok too! I ended up telling my manager at the end of last week, to explain why I was absent earlier in the week. He was really considerate about the MC I had a couple of months ago so I wasn't too worried about letting him know.

I'm quite lucky with my location, in some ways. If things go horribly wrong then I'm only three miles from Leeds General Infirmary. The ambulance station is less than a mile from my house, so I can get rushed there pretty quickly if necessary, which is why I'm not too worried.

My intention however is to have a nice relaxing water birth at home. However I'm not worried too much about having the birth itself at hospital if necessary, but I really don't like the idea of being stuck on a ward afterwards!

I have nightmares of being left on a ward with a screaming newborn I have no idea what to do with, my DH forced to leave, rushed staff ordering me around, 16 year olds chavs in all the beds around me, no edible food provided, filthy bathrooms/showers, etc. I'm sure the reality would be different, but I'd rather play it safe and stay in my own cozy clean house with DH!

CurlyCasper · 23/11/2009 16:09

thanks spir - still waiting to for the call that "Big Boss Will See You Now"!

RA mums also have track record of staying in for longer

We live really near a MWLU (as in two minites' drive), but are hoping to move house before birth, out to a village that is actually nearer another town, where the hospital is known for its high death rate . I hope I can stay with the unit near me at the moment. would be half-hour from new house (if we ever sell and get one where we want it)

givecarrotsachance · 23/11/2009 16:23

spirael IME they are as dirty as you expect . I was in the Friarage last time (N Yorks) - this time Pontefract if it all goes wrong so not far from you.

I had that nightmare. Gave birth at 7.30pm. Baby nappied up for me, me stuck in side room on own (better than ward). At 3.30 am, covered in blood and with crying baby and having seen noone since about 10pm, stuck in room so couldn't get anyone's attention, eventually decided to leave baby alone (didn't know if SS would come and get me for that one) to ask how to change his nappy/if I was supposed to be bleeding like a stuck pig/if I could please have a sanitory towel and new bedding.

Leeds may well be better and a pre-visit is expected and offered by most hospitals so that's worth doing.

Sorry, don't want to be negative but I hated the last hospital birth and would move heaven and earth to avoid it again.

givecarrotsachance · 23/11/2009 16:25

casper is the high death rate because they're crap, or because they take on high risk cases which screws up their stats, but isn't actually indicative of their ability?

CurlyCasper · 23/11/2009 16:28

nah, dragged through the papers and telly for being shite and letting people die. Not actually looked into it tho - will if we move and it becomes our nearest. Then I shall be sure to get ill while visiting other towns

(haven't even looked into maternity there TBH, need to sell house first)

BettyButterknife · 23/11/2009 16:43

I really want a home birth but I'm not allowed one

Last time they hooked me up to a drip of some kind of anti-haemorrhage drug as I've got a big fibroid, and said because of that I'd have to give birth in a hospital.

Shame, I hated being in hospital with DS - we were in for a week and I nearly went round the bend. Sounds like my experience was a lot better than some descriptions here, though. At least it was fairly clean and I had a private room.

Food was HIDEOUS though, despite them telling me to eat lots of fibre (when only vegetarian option on the menu once was a pie with a mash topping served with either new potatoes from a tin or chips!). And I didn't find the staff particularly kind... I guess they see people with seriously ill newborns all the time and have limited sympathy

Haven't told my boss yet. In fact, other than me and DH, it's only you lot that know I'm pg! I'm 6+4 and want to get to 12 weeks before telling anyone, although it'll be really hard over Christmas.

Oh, and I'm eating like a pig too, when I'm not feeling queasy. Normally I'm reasonably healthy but I've been on a diet of crumpets and Hula Hoops for the past week. Terrified of getting massive, as I'm still carrying 2 stone extra from last DC!

givecarrotsachance · 23/11/2009 16:44

casper of course, if you happen to be elsewhere when going into labour then they can't turn you away from the 'pital. May be awkward to plan, but a possibility

givecarrotsachance · 23/11/2009 16:47

betty with you on the 2 stone . And SOOO with you on the food in 'pital. Having eaten virtually nothing for 12 hours the only thing that they could find for me was a friggin' soggy sandwich. Def take in your own food.

Hospital gals - don't be put off by me. 'twas an old and crappy regional hospital which has now closed its maternity unit. I'm sure most of them are much better.

Chulita · 23/11/2009 17:06

Cheltenham General was lovely (for a hospital) lovely staff and very clean, it's a pity we moved...

lifeistooshort · 23/11/2009 17:52

page so glad everything went well and that you can now breathe and relax!

Casper you don't have to go to the crap hospital. With DS I did fight not to go to my local hospital which was awful but to go to one in another town 30mns away. You have the right to chose who and where cares for you. If you don't like your mw you can ask for another one. If you don't like your hospital, you can get your file transferred. Not easy but it is your right.

I am planning a home birth too. I had one with DS (the hospital was back up) and it was so lovely. Am pondering whether to hire independent midwives or not. I guess I'll see what the local midwife is like before I make my decision

TishTosh21 · 23/11/2009 18:14

Hello everybody! Ive just come back from the docs. She has given me info on healthy eating and the midwife will contact me in the next week or so to go through the paperwork. The doc calculated off the top of her head that im 5 or 6 weeks but im actually 7 weeks on wed.

To all the smokers who are 5 or 6 weeks and trying to give up, my doc said the baby doesnt actually get anything from you at this stage as it is surviving in the sac at the mo and the placenta hasnt formed yet so if you give up now there will be no damage to the LO. Ive had no ciggies today and im determined not to have any ever again!

Gracie123 · 23/11/2009 18:23

I went to see the doctor today, who wants me seen by the midwife at 8 weeks! I am always consultant led and in the high risk catergory, for preeclampsia, gest diabetes, severe spd and I have a screwed up spine! oh the joys!!!

Once again look forward to getting to know you all

berberis · 23/11/2009 19:17

Hello everyone, and welcome to all the newbies.

I'm just catching up after a few days, and sending positive thoughts out to misswoowoo - hope everything turns out ok.

to page, that's great, what a relief.

violet i am with you on the going off meat! Plus I am also not eating very healthily, have had cake every day for the past two weeks. I have some greens lined up for supper.

Saw my GP to check in today, and will wait for a midwife to contact me for first appt. Feel very behind everyone else. GP mentioned nuchal scan straight away, I guess because of my age (now 36). Also she said my date is 6th July, not 10th, if anyone is updating the list.

Have a relaxing evening everyone x

BettyButterknife · 23/11/2009 19:32

Crikey, mumtoo3! You're brave

Sounds like you really suffer during pregnancy, far more than most. However, I've felt those familiar niggles coming back - tiredness, back pain etc. If I'm honest, I'm sort of worried about going through pregnancy again. I didn't love it first time round and I'm in much worse physical condition now. Just trying to carry DS up the stairs wore me out today... Can't imagine how it'll be by 9 months

We've got a few people with 2 or more DC here, haven't we? Can you tell me how things change when you have 2 DC? I can't get my head around how things will work!

randomama · 23/11/2009 19:45

hey ladies,

sorry not posted for a while. been feeling a bit unconfident to post, although been lurking and thinking of you all.

welcome and congratulations to all newbies!!!

misswoowoo - thinking of you and sending hugs your way.

I'm a bit stressed out cos i've got to go to the EPAU tomorrow. I had a small amount of red blood yesterday. Wasn't going to worry too much because I had no pain and no further bleeding but last night started with a strange sort of pulling/nipping pain in my lower right abdomen. Not all the time but pretty frequently; it's not massively sore but certainly the pain side of uncomfortable so I'm getting it checked. The MW I spoke to at the EPAU seems to think it could be either a sign of just an ovarian cyst or something related to PID scarring or (less likely) ectopic. They're gonna do a scan and just see how the land lies. I'm concentrating on feeling relatively positive. I feel pretty ropey and a bit meh but the MW was confident that it DIDN'T sound like a MC so I'm focusing on that.

I had a homebirth with DS and it was beautiful. WIll be having one again (fingers xd). Didn't know if they'd let me cos I'm about 40 mins from hospital but as long as all goes well (although I suppose this isn't the best start ) I should be OK.

xoxox

WinterMadness · 23/11/2009 20:06

Hello everyone

Gosh, lots of people talking about home births. You're far braver than me. Had a tough time in labour with pregnancy induced hypertension/eclampsia, followed by ds getting stuck and being on the brink of a ECS before ventouse finally worked. Then ds was only with me 23hrs then admitted to neonatal. So forgive me girls, but it completely terrifies me to think of home birth. Hospital all the way for me (rubbish food or not) lol

Sorry to hear things aren't looking good misswoowoo. Sending you my best wishes.

Well I'm due 3rd July but way behing most of you in terms of appointments and scans!!! Got my booking appointment with mw on Friday and going to book private scan and nf for before Xmas. Only problem is the clinic is 1and a half hours away But went there last time and trust them so wouldn't go anywhere else.

To all those wishing for sickness, please don't! I didn't have any sickness etc 1st time round and so far 8weeks 2 days and none again...long may it continue I say! It is actually more common to not get ms so please just be grateful like me

Hello to newbies, welcome aboard the July bus

kittykat77 · 23/11/2009 20:26

Hi guys,
thought I'd better check back in! I am completely with you Wintermadness on the hospital birth thing. I'm too scared of things going wrong!
Things generally seem ok with me so far - feeling tired but no sign of any MS as yet - which is a little wierd as was quite sick with both my other 2 - but I guess I shouldn't complain!
Anyone else struggling with the clothes situation? My trousers are soon going to be too tight, have had to send DH in the loft for the maternity stuff already... which is a little worrying given I am not even 6 weeks yet .
Fingers crossed to all those having problems at the moment.

Gracie123 · 23/11/2009 21:18

I'd love a home birth, unfortunately nearest hospital is a 1hr 15 minute drive away, and if there is a tractor in the way, or someone is herding their sheep up the road it has been known to take us 2 hours (whilst in labour with DS)!!!

I don't think I'll be risking a home birth, just in case. Besides which complications with DS make the MW think I should have another CS.

Is there anyone else here who wants to give VBAC a go? Or anyone who already has?

tjtheminx · 23/11/2009 21:49

page great news, I've been thinking of you.
To everyone else who's new welcome

I'm trying to get an earlier scan too. My first scan is booked for 15th December when I'll be 9 weeks. Not only that but we'll be flying to Ireland for 2 weeks on the 18th. So if the worst happens I don't want a. to be scheduled for a D+C the day before I fly transatlantic b. be in the middle of a mc on the flight or at home during the festivities aand c. I'm bound to spill the beans when I'm there so need some kind of reassurrance before I go.

I've just called the obstetrician to see if I can get the scan brought forward. Although everything is private ( and you pay handsomely for it) the receptionists at the "OBGYN" office are a nightmare to deal with. They are basically the gate keepers. I hope my message gets through to the doctor. He's fantastic and aware of my previous 2 mc so hopefully will be sympathetic.

You are driving me mad with all your talk of chippy chips and fruit and nut bars!! No nice choccie or chips here... can't wait to get home for a nice greasy bag of chips with lots and lots of vinegar.
