would anyone have a link to a good pregnancy tracker?

twigletti · 23/11/2009 10:49

Hi iggy, I am only 5 weeks, but am seeing mw on Weds and going to ask for early scan, at 7 weeks if poss. I had an earlyish scan at 9 weeks last time but had had mmc by then. If the same thing happens again, I want to know sooner rather than later and not spend weeks wondering.

iggypiggy · 23/11/2009 10:51

twigletti that is my exact thinking! I have emailed the place I went for private scan last time to see what they think.

Given that the result of a NF is not a given, just a risk, then if you were high risk and you wouldn't terminate I guess you wouldn't go to amnio - so I wouldn't bother. On the other hand, you could be more prepared.

We're testing for things we would terminate for, but also for things that we want to know about to be prepared for - some of which may need immediate surgery after birth to fix.

violetbubbles · 23/11/2009 11:07

Hi everyone
I'd totally recommend an early scan, even if it is just for peace of mind. Mine cost £90 but it was worth it!

Is anyone else struggling to eat a healthy, balanced diet? I always thought I'd be the perfect mum-to-be; eating lots of microbiotic veggies and organic couscous, just like Madonna...but that's just not the case! All I can stomach is chips, from the chippy!!! And salt and vinegar crisps, and Licorice Allsorts, and ritz biscuits and lemon sherbets. It's the strangest thing because before I was pregnant I was really quite healthy and NEVER craved chippy chips!

I also can't eat any meat at the moment - the thought of red meat, chicken, even fish makes me feel sick I've even had to put my lovely brown bath mat into storage because the texture reminds me of raw mince!! Am I losing my mind???

CurlyCasper · 23/11/2009 11:19

Question: do they automatically do the nuchal fold measurement at the 12-week scan or do you have to ask for it?
It's not clear in anything I have read.

givecarrotsachance · 23/11/2009 13:14

violet completely normal and your baby will get all it needs but if you're worried take pregnacare or something (you prob are anyway, for the folic acid?).

casper it's a special scan. When I had LC I had to have it done privately although I think now they may do it on the NHS - not too sure. So it may have changed now, but don't risk it - ask your midwife what they do in your area. You should also have a blood test 1-2 weeks before so make sure you're sorted well in time.

Spirael · 23/11/2009 13:25

Whoa, lots of posts over the weekend! Been a bit AWOL as my parents were visiting. Sympathies to everyone going through a rough patch with bleeding at the moment, I hope everything turns out ok in the end.

I had my first midwife appointment this morning and she seems to be really nice. She did the booking in with me, so I now have a huge folder with lots of information inside it that she wants me to read ahead of my next appointment, which is two weeks on Friday. Apparently they'll be taking blood and want a FMU sample for then.

Unfortunately, I got politely told no when asking for an early scan, so looks like I'll have to go private to get one at approximately 8 weeks. However the midwife was fine with my request for a homebirth. I was worried I was going to get pressured to go to the hospital, but they seem fine with letting me stay home for my first time.

Aside from that, nothing big to report here. I'm currently wondering whether or not I feel a bit sick... I haven't been sick since I was a child, so it's hard to remember what it feels like! I'm just looking at the packet of Spatone on my desk and wondering whether I dare attempt to stomach it, or if bad things will happen if I try...

So, how's everyone else doing?

Page62 · 23/11/2009 13:31

just got back from my scan and absolutely over the moon little bean was there with a v strong heartbeat that i even got to hear! the sonographer highlighted an area that she said was likely to have caused the bleeding but she is almost certain it will resolve itself and shouldn't interfere with the bubba. i am earlier than i thought (6 weeks + 1 day) so due july 18. she gave me a picture it looks like the caterpillar in very hungry caterpillar, but it's the most beautiful thing ever!
thanks so much for positive thoughts!!!!

CurlyCasper · 23/11/2009 13:33

MissWooWoo · 23/11/2009 13:38

Hi all and thanks so much for all your lovely supportive posts.

So pleased for you Page62 that is fantastic news.

I'm just playing the waiting game really, think I will just try and "get on with things". No more posts from me for now.

Good luck ladies!

Page That's brilliant! I'm having my first scan tomorrow and I think I'll be 6+3 so I'm hoping I get to hear something too.

Spirael Great news about the home birth.

Basically I feel like shit, I've been up since 3am my time and ms has started - no puking just nausea. I might also cry if nobody minds.

iggypiggy · 23/11/2009 13:43

page excellent news!

misswoowoo thinking of you while you wait.

Spirael · 23/11/2009 13:58

That's wonderful, Page62! I'm so glad everything is ok.

NorkyButNice · 23/11/2009 14:21

Happy to hear your good news Page62 - hang in there misswoowoo, fingers crossed that things take a turn for the up.

Not a lot to report here - bad all day nausea and am throwing up each time I eat (so am trying to avoid eating at the moment which probably isn't advisable!). Big difference to the hyperemesis of last time is that I'm managing to keep down liquids, thank goodness.

Anyone else planning a home birth other than Spirael? I'd like one after a quite medicalised birth with DS and DH says it's up to me, but I'm not sure!

Brilliant news page 62! I am also 6+1 and due on the 18th, snap!

Feeling horrendous today as I couldn't get to sleep until 4am. I made it into work this morning but felt like I was swimming through treacle and had to come home at lunchtime. I can normally cope OK with one bad night but being PG I just can't - I feel sick and faint and all over the place. I'm tucked up on the sofa with the cats, the laptop, a cuppa and a big bar of Fruit & Nut, watching the crazy weather outside.

givecarrotsachance · 23/11/2009 14:40

NORKY I am. Planned with DS1 but was transferred for stupid reasons - local area was VVVVVVV unsupportive. MW turned up and said there weren't enough MWs to cover so I'd have to go in. ex-H called her bluff and politely said to not worry about it, to go in and see to the other ladies and we would be fine alone . Miraculously another was found . Sadly, meconium in waters meant instant transfer even though not needed .

All after huge fight over getting it in the first place - doc sending me letter saying she didn't recommend it, wouldn't come out, etc. I wrote letter back saying t'was ok, we had hot running water, electricity and plenty of towels. Suspect I was seen as "a difficult patient" . Me = irritated to have been considered a "patient".

SO this time I'm booking an independant midwife and chaining myself to the bed . Hated, hated, hated being in hospital. Even worse when LC was 13 days old and in with severe reflux for 3 days. He vomited on floor and although I mopped up with paper towels, mess was still there 3 days later. I brought my own cleaning stuff in . Hospital ob was only supportive one. Me, "I'm wanting to avoid a hospital birth because of a,b,c and I am worried about contracting stuff like MRSA". Ob, "There's more things to worry about in this hospital than MRSA". Jeez that was reassuring.

I know someone else here is but don't want to out them. Tis up to them.

Anyone else?

Ski soooo sorry to hear you're feeling miz .

CurlyCasper · 23/11/2009 15:00

Just told one boss cause felt I've been far from on par past couple of weeks. She said I'd in fact seemed very efficient (?!) and congratulated me, told me to eat well etc! Much better response that I'd expected. Should be seeing big boss, who I get on v well with but who might be a bit miffed, later today... wish me luck!

givecarrotsachance · 23/11/2009 15:28

Well done casper, glad it went well. Good luck with other boss.

I'm soooo tired today

skihorse · 23/11/2009 15:38

Norky I'm a home birth gal too. It's very normal here in NL - I believe 70% are home births.

lazyemma · 23/11/2009 15:40

excellent news, Page62! Delighted and relieved for you.

violetbubbles I ate trash all the way through my last pregnancy, interspersed with the occasional token bit of fruit. I worked in Easterhouse in Glasgow, the heart attack capital of the western world, so there wasn't much healthy food on offer nearby. On weekdays I had a Macdonald's double sausage and egg mcmuffin every day for breakfast (I still remember that time with fondness). This time I'm vegetarian, which doesn't mean I'm necessarily eating any healthier - cheese is featuring heavily, as is potato in all its buttery/fried incarnations - but I'm making sure I eat my greens and pulses too because I don't want to end up anaemic and on iron tablets.

Norky I'd love a home birth but I don't know. I don't fancy a last minute ambulance ride if it all goes tits-up (there's no reason to think it would, but you never can tell) My local hospital is good, if busy, and I had a v. positive and straightforward experience when I gave birth to my daughter there. Undecided.

CurlyCasper · 23/11/2009 15:49

thanks 'rots

On the food front I cannot face even the idea of eating mash at the moment (wierd!)

Think I'll be hospital all the way, but do fancy water birth. There are apparently a few extra risks when you have rheumatoid arthritis, so I'll see what the docs MWs think and go somewhere than I can get good pain relief if needs be!
