Hi everyone

There's still some space in the old thread - Waddling Zombies and Dancing Babies so no need to start posting yet. Just thought I would get it set up before I go home tonight ready for all you insommiacs!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Just got home from shopping with my mum and there was a hatchling announcement!!!!

  • so so many congratulations Gingermumi - HOW EXCITING!!
gingermumi · 09/01/2008 16:32

Hi Mana, yes, i was there on saturday but i didn't see tour! How wierd! I was in Room F so you must have wheeled past me!

Thanks for all the congrats, he is gorgeous but I am extremely biased.

OK, here goes.....

Like lots of us, I have not been that great for weeks. Got through Chrimbo OK, took it very easy really. Went to my sister's on Sunday 30th and felt very rough, so bad we left early 'cos i jut wanted/needed to be at home. Went to bed and at about 3am woke up in a puddle. Stripped the bed and phoned hospital who obviously said come straight in. Had contractions on way to hospitl about every 5 mins, thought, 'phew, this is it!'. Was examined by a registrar who said that my cervix was closed so i must have wet myself. Midwife, however, said if normally you continent (apart from usual pregnancy stress incontinence) it wasn't likely I'd spontaneously wet myself. Anyway, they decided that contractions were just painful braxton hicks but just incase they developed i'd need steroids for baby's lungs because i was under 36 weeks. They also gave me something to stop the BHs. Everything stopped and I was reviewd by a consultant who decided that because I was nearly 36 weeks i didn't need the steroids and as they had messed up my blood sugar i didn't need the second injection. They decided to keep me in for another day to observe events!

New Year's Eve contractions started again and I went back to labour ward but they stopped after three hours. By this time I hadn't slept for 29 hours and felt like s**t. Midwife told me i must sleep and she stopped everyone from coming in, including doctors! God bless her! when I woke up at lunch time i had swollen up all over and was in a large amount of pain, strangely in my knees and jaw - the pressure from the fluid and itching all over. The registrar that saw me said that basically my body couldn't cope anymore (no shit sherlock!) and that as I had an appointment with my consultant the following day he would wait for the ok from him but that he felt i should be induced. Stayed in overnight and then went to clinic app wed.

Well, went to clinic, my consultant still on holiday, saw his accomplice (a 'clinical fellow' - what ever that is!). He was totally dismissive (I've seen him once before, he told me fibroid didn't hurt!). said my waters clearly hadn't gone (despite sonographer telling me that day that they had - she had trouble finding enough to measure) and that contractions were braxton hicks, swelling was nothing to worry about and that i was being discharged. Did a monitor session and despite all the boxes not being ticked that i could go. Midwife even said to him 'are you sure? The protocol hasn't been reached' - this means that certin criteria hadn't been met on the trace but he said he didn't care!!!! Told her to do some blood tests and that i was to go back on friday for a check up. Felt very upset and let down and as if no-one was listening (well, the doctors anyway, the midwives were amazing).

Went home, my mum came round, she could't believe how ill i looked. I felt really awful, still having twinges and very swollen. Next day (thursday) got a phone call from hosptial saying i had to go back in! The blood tests showed that either the baby or me or both had an infection. Back to hosp again and was put on a monior and blood tests repeated. Told to get a cuppa and consultant would see me in about an hour. After about 5 hours finaly got to see him. He was absolutely fab! Said levels of somthing had risen (can't remember what it was)and that clearly waters had gone earlier in week and consequntly we had picked up infection. He said that baby's head was so far down in the pelvis that it had stopped the leak like a cork! He wanted to induce either that night or following morning. Taken to labour ward which was pretty quiet so they decided to star me off at about 10pm. DD2 was with us so, as it was about 9pm (we'd been there since lunch time)dh took her home and I got dd1 to come home from uni so that they could 'look after each other'- both dds getting nervous and excited by this stage.

They gave me prostin (?) pessary to soften cervix with a view to starting labour proper, by drip, after about 5 hours. After about 10 minutes was in terrible pain, after about an hour they gave me morphine and i was contracting less than a minute apart but the cervix was still closed. Constant monitoring showed baby getting distressed. I asked them to do somethin as i was getting to the point where i couldn't carry on (having had two babies already i knew things weren't right). I had no pain relief at all with dd2 and handled it much bette than this labour. Midwife noticed sudden, critical drop in baby's heart rate and it was all systems go! Wheeled off for emergency c-sect. They wanted to do general anaesthetic but i asked them to try spinal, they said they couldn't as contractions were so close togther they wouldn't be able to get kneedle in. I had one chance, they would give me an injection that might slow the contractions but it had to be done immediately. They gave me the drug and there was about 30 seconds when pain stopped and they managed to get spinal in. OMG the relief, both physical and emotional! All the pain and discomfort I had felt for weeks and the pain I had been in at that point went. Toby was born about a minute later!

They thought all was Ok and while they stitched me up he was with us, it was fantastic. We both held him and the staff were great with us. It didn't matter that it had been so frantic, we felt so special.

We went back to delivery room and they were preparing to transfer us back to post natal ward and the mw realised LO was grunting a bit. They got docs and he was transferd to special care. Breahing was bit laboured and following checks they found his blood sugar was low and he had a slight murmur on his heart. Sounds awful but all fairly managable. We were both put on antibiotics anyway because of infection.

Toby stayed in SCBU for a couple of days until everything settled down and I was able to feed him myself after 24hours, which was amazing - i didn't think that after all that had happened i'd be able to. They let us home on monday. I have to say, apart from the usual stuff associated with a c-section feel pretty good. I think I had such a rough time at the end of the pregnancy and with birth that, despite discomfort and tiedness, this is the best I've felt for a vey long time! Fibroid didn't affect birth at all and is not causing pain now! They will review it at 6 week check.

Sorry... but you did ask!!!

I hope mini is OK, looks like she's next!
On baby clothes- did't wash them, did think about it but never got round to it! Hasn't been a problem. Hosp bag - dont bother with breast pads, did't use them until i came home. Take newborn size outfits, 0-3 are huge (Toby weighs 7lb 15ozs) and they're huge on him! Have tried not to use wipes but did last night and now he's got a sore bum so i would probably say avoid for a bit if you can (even sensitive ones, which is what i used).

Well, that's me for now. Hope everyone ok.XXX

gingermumi · 09/01/2008 16:50

Sarah, go with your instincts ! I wish i had believed enough in myself to be pushy. My instinct said there was something wrong and no-one would listen until it was almost too late. If your instinct is to be at home then you should go for it. I felt (sorry, not very pc) that there are too many men making decisions about my body and the baby. There seemed to be a lot of dismissal of my concerns and not much listening going on, It is also about choice and you seem quite alert to problems and have thought about what you would do. Being close to hosp is cetainly a bonus.

Thanks again for all he lovely comments. in hosp someone thougt i was about 30 - felt and looked like shit but i wanted to kiss her! I expect she was on the heavy drugs too!

Egg · 09/01/2008 17:07

Bloody hell so v scary ginger, so glad you and toby came through it all ok.

Also found I needed more newborn clothes last time than I thought. This time obviously my babies will be a bit smaller but last time DS was 7lbs 8 and yes 0-3 swamped him. Had to send DH out to buy more newborn. Two weeks later of course he had outgrown them.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I want to have some babies .

trish12 · 09/01/2008 17:12

tnanx Egg , will give it a whirl, u will all have to bear with me tho, my brains a little mush at the mo!!

Amy78 · 09/01/2008 17:28

OMG Ginger - you've fairly had a time of it! But hey, what a wonderful wee result at the end of it. He is absolutely gorgeous!!

Had first ante natal class today - all of us are first time mums and nuts which helps!! DH didn't turn too pale when they put on the birthing video!

Clothing sizes are completly confusing me at the moment. Have bought new born but the fact that one place is only up to 7lbs and the next is upto 11lbs. Why can't they just make things standard sizes? Don't think my pregnancy brain can cope!!

Good luck Mini - hope it's not too long a wait!

Pk616 · 09/01/2008 17:29

Trish - Hello and welcome

Jo - Why Thank You! You've made me go all bashful now!! there's nothing to be impressed about though. I read each post and if I've got summut to say I type and then I move on to the next one. I only do this when I have the time or am awake and I only do it because otherwise I forget what I wanted to say and what's been said. If any of that makes any sense more power to ya!! shocking description of your pelvic capacity! I can still get behind the wheel of my car also, with plenty of room to spare actually! It's the getting in and out of the actual seat that's the problem (more the getting out, gravity just superglues me to the seat!)

Bean - what an evil doc! Grrr! let her attitude wash over you, there was nothing else you could have done after all!

Slacker - I think the furthest south I could manage would be cheltenham, not that I've ever been there! I'd have to bring the oldest man though 'cause he wouldn't let me drive that far away on my own this close to my due date - he's a big softie! We'll have to see what Jo and mymissus think!

mini - good luck mini, I'm thinking of you

lljkk - I'm sorry to inform you that it is no big myth about biological powder. I never ever used it until I read that it can be good for cleaning grease off your hob so I got a box in. one day, having run out of my non-bio and desperately needing to wash some knickers I did a waah with the biological stuff. This did not end well at all, I had bleeding welts all over me, some in very sensitive places, within half a day of putting on my freshly laudered clothes I know that this is an extreme reaction but just wanted to let it be know that it is possible to react to biological washing powder.

Count - my whole house is over flowing with baby related equipment! it's a total nightmare. We didn't have much room to move around before I got pregnant because of the oldest mans guitars and amps etc and my arts and crafts and uni stuff (I've got 3 sewing machines for a start!) I've thrown stuff out and rearranged things and done everything I can think of to maximise space but it's no use. the house is just down right cluttered and hazardous and I'm no where near rich enough to buy any more storage solutions. We're going to stay living in chaos until we either get a new house (one with 2 bedrooms would be lovely!!) or I can come up with a grand master plan! basically what I'm saying is I feel for you!

tyaca - that is one fab list! I am particularly proud that my baby could be sharing her birthday with James Dean! Fantastic!

caramel - glad you had a good holiday, welcome back!

ginger - congratulations Horrid, horrid, scary as pants labour story but so glad that you and Toby came out well in the end and yes he is cute as a button!

sarah - not that I'm qualified to give an opinion or anything, but, I think you should go with your gut. If you want a home birth and your MW is happy to support you in that decision, go for it!

Well after the baby news my tit bit for the day seems really really lame! I was so pleased with myself aswell!! my hospital bags are done 100%! I brought my disposable knickers and arnica tablets today which were the only things remaining so proper chuffed about that. Also it's my first parentcraft class tonight so chuffed about that also.

Egg · 09/01/2008 17:44

Amy I think (but am often wrong) that places like Next have a label on ALL their baby clothing up to 6 or even 12 months saying "newborn" and then if you look on the underside it then says either newborn, 0-3, 3-6 etc. Whereas most shops actually don't put anything saying newborn unless they really mean it! When I sent DH out to get newborn when I was in hospital he first came back with 0-3 months from Next as it said Newborn on the main label.

Saying that, shops do vary, I definitely noticed that when going through our load of stuff. And also once washed they are marginally smaller too.

Incidentally, Next sleepsuits are great as they have those special turnover cuffs which stop babies scratching themselves / keeps their hands warm.

trish12 · 09/01/2008 17:48

thanx pk

mymissus · 09/01/2008 18:19

Wow Gingermumi - what a story - well done and congratulations again

Jo - re the arnica - have bought some today as well as raspberry leaf tea. I know there are some pointers on how many rlt pills to take somewhere on this thread (they are 64mg of 1:10 extract) but have not looked up the arnica dosage. I used to feed it to the horses when they banged themselves, and take it myself if I had a fall and it was brilliant, but am not sure what and when we start taking it for post labour soreness. Any advice on either would be MUCH appreciated.

Sarah - I would go with your instincts and if you are that close to the hospital you will be fine...

princessllama · 09/01/2008 19:10

congratulations gingermumi. he is really sweet and i love that name, have been pushing for it for lo but dh keener on other name-boo hiss. i think you should make an official complaint about that a*hole who cocked up so badly for you. like that the hospital have a reason to watch him more closely and make sure he doesn't do the same to anyone else-obviously prob last thing you want to do right now. well done with bf-really impressed.
leesmum (i think it was you) it's a good sign all the uncomfortable bh's after the all fours, means the baby and your body are trying to sort themselves out. i highly recommend an osteopath who specialises in pregnancy to try and help-but then i would, i am one .
good luck mini we're all thinking of you. am getting v broody too Egg but have much longer to wait. and prob a good thing too, what with the builders not getting their fingers out.
don't know if everyone else posted this too, but sainsburys is doing a third off on all nappies. -mad pg nesting instinct took over. my trolley was overflowing with them for dd and lo. cue mad looks from all other shoppers including my mum. maybe she has a point as have no where to put them except boot of our car (dad wouldn't be impressed if i tried to store them at the flat).
spent hours in the babywipes section in indecision whilst dd dismantled display.

Jambuttie · 09/01/2008 19:20

MINI UPDATE

Well she's still hanging on. Docs done a sweep on her about t- time and have basically said they will do no more till tomorrow at the earliest- unless of course the sweep starts her off!!!!

She's well p*ed off and really teary. Hopefully soon it'll be all done and she will be holding her babies

sarahmikeandharry · 09/01/2008 19:20

Hi all-

Thanks for your mesage and support, it really means alot, Slacker will be over to yahoo instantly!!!

I have decided to ignore mr im know everything but nothing and will see how things go-

MW will be here tomorrow so will definatley decide what im gonna do then!!! but i think will follow my heart and go for hb as originally planned,

Ginger- fantastic birth story, cannot belive how many people tried to tell you you were wrong though!!!

toby is gorge- well done!!!!!

sarahmikeandharry · 09/01/2008 19:22

Sending hugs to Mini-

Hope she is ok- other than pi**ed off waiting aroung- there must be nothing worse!!!

Well done keeping her company and updating us Jambuttie!!!!

beansprout · 09/01/2008 19:54

Ginger - congratulations!!! Toby is a brilliant name and he really is rather gorgeous (as are your dds too). I'm so sorry to hear about the nightmare you had, I've just read it all, murmuring "OMG" and "what a nightmare" throughout. To be dismissed when both you and the MWs are saying that there was a problem is frankly rather scary. I do understand the relief you describe when you finally had your section though - just how I felt last time!

Sarah - sorry to hear they are trying to stop your choice of birth, you go and give them hell girlfriend!!

Egg - thanks for your support re the other thread, much appreciated.

Jam/mini - sending you lots of birthing vibes, big hug from the house of bean.

Egg is right about the Next labelling, it's all newborn until you actually check!! As I know I am likely to be having a big baby I am going straight into 0-3 territory as am too tight to buy smaller stuff.

Another bad night, have been awake since 3.30am.... Went and picked up the armsreach co-sleeper cot today which another MNer has kindly lent me. Haven't assembled it yet as just too damn tired this afternoon but v excited though. Just arnica and big pants to get now.

rozzyraspberry · 09/01/2008 19:54

Ginger - congratulations!!! He's gorgeous and a really good weight for 36 weeks - no wonder you were so uncomfortable with an almost 8lb baby and the fibroid! Glad you're both ok - are you dds loving having a little brother?

Jambuttie - thanks for keeping us updated on mini - no wonder she's teary - hopefully she'll go into labour after the sweep or get started soon. She must be so fed up.

On the baby clothes - it's so difficult to know what size to get isn't it? When we had ds1 I had bought mainly 0-3 months and he was only 6lbs 4 - totally swamped - we have photos of him in sleepsuits and his legs didn't even reach the legs of the sleepsuits. So when I was pregnant with ds2 went out and got tiny baby things and he was 9lbs 3. So this time I have newborn vests and sleepsuits and 0-3 vests and sleepsuits. Have various sizes of snowsuits and outfits from ds1 and ds2 so should have everything I need. Agree with egg on the next sleepsuits with turnover mitts - matalan have these too so all my sleepsuits are next and matalan.

Glad everyone is getting organised - it's so exciting now the babies are starting to arrive.

alkar · 09/01/2008 20:00

Even though I am on mat leave I seem to have less time on my hands than I did when I was working!

Congratulations to ginger - he's gorgeous and will hopefully sending congrats to mini very soon.

Sarah - stick to your guns re the home birth, hope its resolved tomorrow.

Trish and Leesmum, I live in the same area as you both and yes the weather was terrible - DH slept through it though, typical!

Merly, I have been given baby clothes and maternity clothes from 4 people now - I have far too many. I have put the unisex things in a bag ready to give to another friend who's due in June but isn't finding out what she's having so won't be buying many for herself.

tyaca · 09/01/2008 20:12

ginger -- many thanks for taking the time to write that all down. really really interesting to read. sorry it was more complicated than it needed to be and at the consultant who sent you home. on the flip side, great to hear how good the MWs are. i'm glad to hear that you feel physically so much better now, and feeding etc going so well. hope your DDs are enjoying their little brother too! hope you're taking notes ladies, i will be expecting the same amount of detail from you all!

pobletsmum · 09/01/2008 22:21

Ginger - huge congratulations! Thanks for sharing your birth story. Like everyone else, am for the treatment you received from Drs. Please keep posting updates - it will keep us all going! Pics are gorgeous by the way!

Mini - hope it's all over soon. Can't wait to hear the good news.

As for me, I've had a pretty miserable couple of days after spraining my ankle. With builders here and being confined to the sofa in my lounge, and DS going a bit stir-crazy, I'll be glad to get out of the house tomorrow if ankle is up to it.

ayrshirelolo · 09/01/2008 22:32

Congratulations Ginger - he's lovely!!! 2 more babies on the Jan thread too today, all these photos are making me want to meet mine!
I'ma t the magic 37 weeks now, so am drinking loads of raspberry leaf tea, bouncing around on excercise ball, eating pineapple etc... dd wasn't late so hoping this one won't be either as i'm the size of a bus and getting fed up!
Sarah all i'd say is to ask the consultant guy to give you the figures.... what are the chances of you having a post natal haemoridge (sorry, can't spell!) at your BMI compared to someone with a lower BMI? Bet he doesn't know and is taking through his bum!! Good luck with whatever you decide anyway! and of course living so close must cut down the risk.... does this bloke know anything ? (probably not... you can tell i've got a lot of respect for male consultants telling women how to give birth!!)
Anyway, looking forward to hearing news of mini, and manamana you are not alone - lots of ladies on Jan thread have your problem . Last time i found the femegel blue gel packs brilliant, you get them out of Boots or mothercare and keep them in the freezer, put them in the gauze bags and use them for piles or stitches post natal, worth every penny!!!
anyway girls, hope it's a quieter night tonight, bit windy up here last night, we lost most of out back garden overnight!! sleep well, lolo x

bluedomino · 09/01/2008 23:37

Well done ginermumi, he's gorgeous. Very handsome. Take it easy now.

trish12 · 09/01/2008 23:43

what area is that alkar,? i live in bolton

manamana · 10/01/2008 08:11

wow ginger, you went through the mill. thanks so much for sharing all - i love birth stories anyway let alone one of 'our own' .
Can't believe the consultant was so inept but am grateful for heads-up in case I end up with him, will brief dh so he can argue my case - was going to ask you his name but think i;d rather not know and will just treat them all with suspicion!
Poblet - strained ankle - ouch!
Have got bum examination at 10am so am going to cheer myself up by serching for a gorgeous newborn set to order online. Had v successful online shopping day yesterdsay - someone on mnet posted re big sale at Boots - they have got masses of toys at up to 70% disc. I spent ds's xmas money and got £100 worth of stuff for around £30!
Mor happy news yesterday too, first of my circle of best friends from school is pregnant! woo-hoo, finally someone will understand
