Hi everyone

There's still some space in the old thread - Waddling Zombies and Dancing Babies so no need to start posting yet. Just thought I would get it set up before I go home tonight ready for all you insommiacs!

OP posts:

Morning all ladies,
love the title. i have a question- do you wash the babies clothes before packing them for the hospital bag? Pk you are right i have a lot of emotions going on, i have to sort myself out> iam finding it hard to eat anything and i feel so guilty as iam vegetarian the protein bit is lacking.
Oh cheers ladies lets have a fantastic shining day!

samsmam · 08/01/2008 12:15

Love the new thread title!

I had a real panic about how I am going to cope witha 16 month old and a newborn baby. Bit too late now I suppose I have to get on with it.

Wow mini- you have done well to carry the twins. I will try and stop complaining about how bad I feel. Good luck tomorrow.

Egg- glad you are feeling better. I can't think of anything worse than a stomach bug right now.

LO has tonsillitus and ear infection again so she is being very demanding. All she wants is cuddles and it is so uncomfortable having her lay on me but how can I deprive her of cuddles if she is ill.

widgetsmummy · 08/01/2008 12:19

ruva - washing them is an option but plenty of people take them to the hosiptal and use them straight from the packet... depends how you feel about it really.

have washed mine, but love the smell of clean washing so sometimes I go into the nursery and just stick my head into a few of the babygrows and dream.....

sarahmikeandharry · 08/01/2008 12:29

Nothing has happened, however there is lots of pressure really low down now!!!!!

Really cannot wait- had very restless night got up at 4am and watched discovery home and health- baby days!!! very cute babies born!!!!

Will keep you all posted if anything happens!!!

glad to hear all is well- good luck to everyone who has appointments and classes!!!!!

manamana · 08/01/2008 12:32

Morning (ish - well, this morning's still on!) all.
Managed to get back to seleep for a couple of hours after i shipped off the boys to work/nursery. DIdn't get much sleep last nght wth pain and ds waking and screeching a couple of times - he's developed a new one which goes right through you and he can't be calmed down for ages, not really sure what's going on there but hoping that its a very short phase!
Sorry to hear about contnuing pain/llness etc - Samsmam, your poor litte'un, tis very tricky having someone layng on your bump.
To add to the breastfeeding discussion - it was the only thing I managed to do fairly easily - the actual latchng on part - the timing of feeds etc was much trickier, so just to say sometimes its fairly straghtforward but wasn't for most of my friends in my antenatal group and my sil had a nightmare. Her milk never came in properly but the midwives/HV didn't pick up on it so my poor niece didn't get much to eat first few days and ended up in hosptal on a drip - this is a VERY RARE case but I think its useful to know that there are women who can't breastfeed. This is the next area of guilt after you've got over the issue of how you got your baby out! My main shock after I had ds was how many different opiniions there would be about what I was and should be doing with ds re sleeping/feeding/holding/dressing etc etc etc really wore down my confidence coupled with the sleep deprivaton so tip for first timers start developing toughened skin and a serene 'reall, thank you for your advice' response!

ruva · 08/01/2008 12:33

thanks widget,
when the nesting instinct kicks in will wash them, still waiting for the paint in the nursery to dry so i can start placing everything together.

leesmum · 08/01/2008 12:35

Mymissus as far as i'm concerned oven's are meant to look a bit of a mess (that's my excuse for not doing mine in ages)

Tyaca i know what you mean about not getting into gear until midday especially when its so horrible outside, and i wouldn't worry over bf wait and see how you feel after you've had baby, if you decide to give it a go great but dont let it get to you

Ruva i just put all new baby stuff on a quick rinse and spin with a bit of fabric conditioner, but it wouldnt harm them if all new stuff wasn't washed.

Samsmam sorry your daughter is poorly and yes it is uncomfortable when toddlers want to climb all over you!!

sarahmikeandharry · 08/01/2008 12:51

MANAMANA- sounds like you Ds is having night terrors my Ds who is now nearly 3 went through it for a while- a few months back, also my friend littel girl also aroud the same time!! He was sceeching and crying but seemed in a trance!! as though not awake but eyes were open its common in toddlers apparently- if tiring and upsetting for the parents!!!!

Hope i have helped a little- if not sorry- but is should just be a phase.

leesmum · 08/01/2008 13:36

TRISH where are you???

Pk616 · 08/01/2008 13:48

lucy - don't bend to pick up the toys, just kick them aside

lees - tell your DP I sympathise with him over 'audience participation' in the parentcraft classes! I always feel like a gimp in those kind of situations. I guess my self confidence isn't high enough for me to not be thinking that I look or sound like one! your lo sounds really cute with his excitement about the baby. Yup I'll come do some cleaning for you, I've always enjoyed other peoples cleaning anyway! theres one condition though, you gotta move Manchester closer to Birmimngham cause the drive would finish me off!

widget - yes beige is a stupid colour for a carpet! It always looks fresh and lovely when it first goes down and then it's instantly looks a tad the worse for wear. Mind you at least you have carpet down! I'd love a beige carpet right now then maybe I could spend less money on gas trying to keep the house warm! I glad to hear you had a good nights sleep, I think we all deserve at least that before the babies arrive. Don't fret over the hospital from what people have to say, everyone reports back when things don't go the way they'd like but very few people turn round and tell you that 'the hospital was clean, the staff were angels, the food was fit for the queen....' Good luck on your tour, however, and I hope you find that the hospital is lovely and that the bad things you've heard just don't seem to fit! If it doesn't live up to your expectations you could always go on a holiday close to somewhere with a reputable hospital when it's your time! lol! They can't turn a labouring woman away so you can actually give birth anywhere in the country provided you're admitted with contractions!

Bean - why fret! It'll probably be like trying to juggle with your hands tied behind your back to start with but you will adjust, your whole family will adjust and you will do a fab job of raising more than one child.

Egg - glad to hear you are doing better than you have been the last couple of days. Keep getting well! I don't clean ovens very often myself, or anything for that matter! I've always been a very faddy person whether it's food or mood so the fact that I've been experiencing crazy pockets of time where I am compelled to actually do some housework does not surprise me at all and is probably the only way that our house will get to look as neat and tidy as most peoples do all the time! Even as a child I'd let the stuff pile up aroundme until you couldn't move and then I'd have a week where I really wanted to tidy and clean it all up. I'd even go so far as to clean the inside of my bedroom windows when I tidied my room, my mom's not daft, she left me to get on with it!! You'd of laughed at me the other day, I was on my hands and knees sweeping the rugs with a little dust pan and brush. It took me hours. As soon as I was done I got out the vac anf vacuumed them all anyway! talk about daft! Still, it kept me busy so I can't complain!

tyaca - that's the problem with not working, it's so easy to stagnate. My first tip, if you want to use your day for anything do not turn on the TV! I used to watch loads of TV until I realised that it stole huge chunks of my life, now it's hardly ever on! "felt more penguin than person" I love that phrase, it's true, I do feel more penguin than person, most of the time these days! MIL worked right up to the day that both of her children were born, or so she keeps on telling me! I think she's trying to make me think that the sunshines out of her arse so she can babysit more often. It's backfired because knowing that and being 35+4wks gone myself, I think the woman is a f'in' lunatic! She worked a sheet metal power press in a factory standing up all day then she had to go home and cook a full roast dinner for her hubby (DP's dad was insistant that he should have a proper dinner ever day and that meant roast meat and spuds and at least two veg and gravy, she never protested!)

Ruva - could you manage something like hummus at the moment? that way you can snack rather than trying to force a full meal down your neck and I heard that chick peas are one of the best veggie sources of protein around! Just an idea! I'm really really sorry you're so down at the moment. Please don't think that you need to "sort yourself out" that sounds ever so negative, you need to give yourself a break! And don't feel guilty about not being able to eat at the moment, you are not harming your baby, your baby will take nutrients from you whether you eat them or not! So please try to stop focusing on the areas where you think you might be failing and give yourself some loving.

sams - sorry to hear your lo isn't well. I hope she gets well soon

sarah - I watched H&H last night too! babies babies babies, I love it!

trish12 · 08/01/2008 14:11

Hi all, i made it finally, thanx leesmum for the en-route directions, lol. This has to be the most complicated forum ive ever been in, !! But ive just been reading princessllama's post, and that pain thing has struck a cord, im 36wks and over the last few days have been getting a spasm like pain in my tummy, just below my navel but above the pubic bone, so its sort of in the middle. But it only happens when she moves, not every time but when she gives me a good hard thud, it dont half hurt, ive had to grip the chair sometimes, has anyone else had this?

beansprout · 08/01/2008 14:56

Hi Trish and welcome! I haven't had the pain you describe (not that particular one, anyway!) but I bet someone else has so hang on and someone will be along in a minute!

Ruva - I'm washing stuff before I use it, old and new. Remember it has to be non-bio from now on too!! Also, babies should not have baby wipes, cotton wool and water only for a while (sorry if you knew that already!).

Good tip about not putting the television on, or, in my case, the computer!!

Really should start thinking about the hospital bag at some point, esp as I know that I am going to be in for 3 days!

Right, have to go and see GP for check up, back in a bit...

Egg · 08/01/2008 15:15

I think now my hospital bag is 99% packed I don't lie awake worrying about it anymore (just about other things...). Did in fact sleep WELL last night though.

I pre-washed everything last time, and have washed all early baby and newborn stuff this time. Only thing I haven't washed is the teeny tiny baby stuff that i think will be too small as at least it is nicer to pass onto someone else if it is still with labels etc, if one of them does have to use it I know it wont kill them. It is basically because newborn skin can be so sensitive and you don't know what chemicals might have been in contact with the clothes in the factory.

I am being naughty and have put a pack of baby wipes in my bag this time, mainly because I remember being in hospital by myself when DS did his first four meconium poos and it took about an hour each time to get it all off! I am kind of hoping I can get the worst off with a wipe or two and then do it properly with cotton wool and water. If I am alone with TWO I don't want to be stuck wiping meconium off one for hours while the other is screaming for food.

They are the sensitive ones.

Feel a bit guilty now.

I might not use them, but at least they are there if I am desperate.

Egg · 08/01/2008 15:15

Sorry, welcome Trish!

Jo9977 · 08/01/2008 15:30

PK - very impressed with your posts and how you manage to respond to everyone...I really can't manage it!

Appointment with midwife went well today - little crumb is docked completely! And apparently I have a pelvis that could deliver a bus He's back in normal size range too so no scan for me...serves me right!

Glos not too far away from me - I'm in Coventry and can still get behind the wheel of a car...am dead pleased, still have only put on 6-7 lbs

Mini, I salute you too!!! Amazing!!!

wotsits · 08/01/2008 15:36

Great title! Have read all posts, and find myself nodding as I read, saying 'yes, that's EXACTLY how I feel/felt about x or y'. I'm glad I found MN before getting pregnant second time round - I'd only discovered it a few days after having DD.
I have a silly-ish question: last week MW said baby is back-to-back and that I should do the sitting forward, going on all fours thing in a couple of weeks' time. If baby had turned the right way in the meantime, would my doing all that undo his good work and make him turn back-to-back again?

Egg · 08/01/2008 15:38

"...a pelvis that could deliver a bus"

LOL! I hope those were not the midwife's words! Quite encouraging though.

I can still fit behind the wheel of the car, I just feel too scared to actually drive anywhere. Was going to go out this morning for a drive as it is such miserable weather for walking, but DS decided he wanted to stay at home and play instead.

beansprout · 08/01/2008 16:17

Wotsits - that's not a silly question. Being on all fours etc will make the baby turn the right way round as the spine is the heavier side and the baby will turn accordingly. Continuing to do this will not make the baby return to the back to back position. We should all be doing it really to ensure that babies stay in the right place or turn as needed.

GP told me off for taking pox boy to the surgery. "Why did you bring him?" she snapped. Er, because I can't leave a 3 year old at home?!! I made sure he didn't go near anyone else but I'm not sure what else I was supposed to do. I wouldn't mind but dh was there yesterday and the first thing she asked me was how he was today, so it's not like she hadn't made the connection. Took all my self control not to burst into tears!

Anyway, baby is 4-5/5ths down so am hoping I don't go early!!

Slacker · 08/01/2008 16:17

Egg - I have been known occasionally to use baby wipes that I've wrung out under the tap first, so you're not fiddling round with bits of cotton wool but you've washed some of the chemicals off - don't fret about it anyway. Although washable wipes with just water are more effective IME than any of the commercial baby wipes.

Wotsits - the idea of the leaning forward is that the baby's spine (which is heavier) drops to the lowest point, which is your front if you're on hands and knees. Whereas if you're reclining in a chair or sofa (who me?? ) the spine may turn to the lowest point which is your back, i.e. turns posterior. I've explained that extraordinarily badly I know but basically, keep leaning forward not back and the spine should end up in the right place! Look up OFP (optimum foetal positioning) and you'll find a site that explains it properly. spinningbabies.com is one I think.

I might be up for a midlands/west meetup as long as it wasn't any further north than Cheltenham...any excuse to go shopping in Chelt!

Welcome Trish and anyone else new...

Flipping plasterer called in sick today, don't know how we're going to get all our bedroom decorating and moving around done before baby arrives...I might have to get up off my arse and do some painting myself At least my last bits of baby stuff I ordered have started arriving. My boys are back from their school ski trip tomorrow and then they're all back at school on Thursday so I'll have no excuse to not start nesting a bit!

Slacker · 08/01/2008 16:20

Oh Beansprout beat me to it and with a clearer explanation! Also a birth ball/gym ball is useful to sit on instead of the sofa, helps with getting the baby in a good position. One of the cheap ones is fine, you don't need a fancy one. Fun to play with after the birth too, babies love being on their tummies and rolled around gently on the ball!

wotsits · 08/01/2008 16:36

thanks beansprout and slacker, will get hefty behind off the sofa and onto gym ball, and look up the website

beansprout · 08/01/2008 16:43

Egg - sorry, I didn't mean to imply a veiled criticism of anyone who uses wipes on a newborn. I bet I get there a lot quicker this time myself. Anyone with twins is on special measures anyway. Use a sandblaster if you like. I would.

miniandme · 08/01/2008 17:02

Am in briefly from hospital appointment, am going into hospital now for monitoring and either tonight or tomorrow induction of my twins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BP was up at 150/90, had ++ protein in urine too, pain and discomfort plus decreased baby movements consultant only agreed to let me come home to bring DS home, who was with us at appointment!

So quick update and im off to meet my babies ladies.

Will update as soon as i can or get DP to come on and let you all know.

Slacker · 08/01/2008 17:05

OMG Mini glad you're not having to wait any longer...hope it goes well and see you back here asap

beansprout · 08/01/2008 17:07

Oh wow - good luck mini!!!! Will be thinking of you!
