berrybliss · 25/09/2007 22:10

That should have said- i've just finished watching......

aikigypsy · 26/09/2007 02:57

So this is what I get for being off-line all day! Actual events happening!

Congratulations to Sparkly again, I hope the new baby is doing well.

Swollen -- I will be in Galway some (I'm in the US for now) so we're practically neighbors?

I don't know about all these new girlfriends and wives of ex-partners, and ex-partners of current partners. My DP has one ex who is a bit excited about the baby (I think) but who doesn't even want to meet me, which is probably just as well. I would be bothered if I found out that she was very excited about the baby, I think.

RGP -- the store does sell hats. Maybe I could rig one up special with gaviscon? Heartburn isn't so bad today, though.

Had a checkup today, and the baby is head-down. I was pretty sure she was set up that way, but it's nice to have it confirmed. The midwife on today was a substitute, and is, according to one of the other local pregnant women "a bit of a Nazi." She told me I couldn't drink alcohol-free beer because it has alcohol in it!!! Can you believe that? I seem to be attracting the nutty midwives. Good thing I can do research on my own.

AnnainNZ · 26/09/2007 04:48

Congratulations to SGK - what fab news (though I know she was hoping she would hold on to him a bit longer!). I can't quite believe one of our November babies is here, it suddenly seems more (gulp) real somehow.

So I had my 34 wk growth scan today and everything was measured and it is all measuring 34 wks, apart from the stomach, which is measuring..........................
36 weeks! The sonographer actually started laughing and said "She's got a fat tummy!". Dh and I were laughing too and called her "big fat baby" all the way home.

Seriously, it's great to know she's obviously getting all the nutrition she needs and is growing fine (a little too much, perhaps - she must like choccy biccies like her mum). I feel a lot more relaxed about the high bp and all that now I know her growth is spot on.

While we were at hosp we visited friend who had prem baby last week at 34 wks, I nearly started crying when i saw the baby - so tiny and so so cute. She's called Mia. Friend looked very well despite having an emergency C/S a week ago, she had HELP syndrome and the whole thing happened incredibly quickly. Her dp was a bit unsure about the whole pg thing, wasn't that keen all the way through, she says he is now the most devoted father and can hardly bear to leave her and the baby at the hospital. Bless...

iris66 · 26/09/2007 07:16

morning all - still haven't caught up properly

Anna - blimey, your friend's LO would be around the same size ours are!! I'd have cried too. That must have been quite a shock realisation. Pleased your scan went well (I've got one later this morning to check growth)You definately know not to get the really tiny newborn stuff now eh

Loopy - good luck with your appointment today

berrybliss - I knew there was something I wanted to watch last night . What other methods were there ?(I tend towards the demand led feeding/co-sleeping(mostly)/never leaving to cry school of thought)
BTW re iron levels: vit C improves uptake so having a glass of orange juice when you eat iron rich foods may help.

Have a good day all - off to make porridge

silkcushion · 26/09/2007 08:56

morning all

Congratulations to SGK and her new baby. Can't believe it - you are right he is the same size as mine is now I guess.

Better get dressed and go to work I suppose.

RG - I also spent ages searching for Supernanny on the listings last night and couldn't find it! Have sky plused the other thing though and will watch it tonight.

FCH · 26/09/2007 09:19

Hello,

Well blimey, the first "November" Baby. Congratulations to SGK and looking forward to news about Master SGK (including his name!!).

This is all now seeming scarily real. The completely shocking thing is that the estimated weight of my baby at the 31 week scan was 4 and a bit pounds (although I know they aren't always that accurate!), and that was 4 weeks ago. This whole actually having a baby thing is feeling increasingly imminent.

Nobody else start having babies yet please!!

Swollen, hello - another person due on the first - hooray!

Floanna - wierd about your ex's new gf, although I am sure she is just trying to either suck up to him or freak you out. I have to say I would not be happy!

By the way - have been trying bio oil for itchy nipples, which works temporarily but I can't put it on often enough to stop the itching at work, and worse, when I rub it in my boobs leak - surely this is a bit early??

Pixiefish · 26/09/2007 09:44

am thinking of packing now- have been told by my friend that I have to just incase- putting things in a basket ready to pack.

Floanna · 26/09/2007 10:06

Thanks for all the comments. Think I'm just going to politely make my feelings known that although I am happy for her to part of ex DPs life, she unfortunately will not be playing a role in LOs - it's just too weird, and incidently too emotional stressful for me TBH!

So excited for SGK - does make it all a bit more real doesn't it??!

thelady - I have a cousin who lives in Jedburgh who's not long ago had a baby girl - visted her a few weeks ago (looooong drive from Leicester!), what a beautiful part of the world you live in you lucky thing!

Is it just me, or is this cold weather making anyone else think of mince pies...?!

choudru · 26/09/2007 10:09

Morning mummies,

Oops - sorry, it was I who announced Supernanny was on last night Sorry! My only defence is that I've lost my mind along with the rest of you. Oh well - at least we get to watch it tonight duck to avoid the breast pads, nappies and bottles of bio oil being thrown at my head

Ahem - moving swiftly on - what fabulous news about Sparkly! And what a healthy weight I'm sure knowing Sparkly, she'll be taking it all in her stride. I think she seemed quite mentally prepared for it so that should soften the blow.

It does make it all seem more real though I agree. I'll be 35 weeks on friday - I remember seething with jealousy at women who were so close to their due dates and now here we are!

I watched the bring up baby thing too Berry. Thought the 1950s method was ridiculous. I understood that you can't go running to the baby everytime they ever start to whinge, but treating them like manipulative little animals that must be taught who is boss was a bit extreme.

As for the amazonian method - I do love the whole sling thing but wouldn't want to be attached to the baby 24/7. I used to do housework with DS in a sling and he would be so calm and cosy. But I would do it when it suited me, not as a rule all day long.

By the way, keeping baby in bed with you is safe as long as you don't put duvet on them, don't use a pillow for them and make sure you don't do it when you've had alcohol or feel over sleepy.

I think I am more close to the Dr Spock method without realising it. I would read stuff in books and take advice from family and friends, but would filter everything through my own intuition. If it didn't seem right, I didn't blindly do it.

I think it really depends on the individual personality of the mother and that particular baby. I am guessing that this LO might be nothing like DS was so I have to be prepared to adapt my approach once she arrives. I'm a lot more relaxed about it second time around - am a lot more confident in my abilities as a mother. After all - as they say - you don't need to be an expert, you just need to be 'good enough'.

I'm feeling very lazy today but should drag myself into the shower as I've promised to take DS to toddler group.

jetgirl · 26/09/2007 10:16

Congrats Sparkly !

Okay folks, sory to keep you waiting for the recipe, yesterday was last day at work and I was exhausted when I got home, then DD put up a real fight going to bed (3rd night in her new bed, instead of cot, once she's asleep she stays asleep, but it's just getting her to get into the thing and stay there!)

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups butter or soft marg
1/2 cup soft brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon peppermint extract
1 1/2 cups plain flour
1/4 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 tespoon salt
1 cup chocolate chips (I usually get a 100g bar of milk or dark chocolate and chop it up - cheaper than chips!)

Cream butter and sugars together.
Beat in egg
Add peppermint and vanilla extracts, stir.
Sift in flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
Mix thoroughly.
Stir in chocolate.

Drop spoonfuls onto two lined baking trays. Bake at 180C, 350F or gas mark 4 for about 15 mintutes. Cool on cooling racks. Makes about 30 decent sized cookies. Takes 30 minutes from start to finish.
Enjoy!

RGPargy · 26/09/2007 11:09

Morning everyone

I wonder how Sparkly and BabyGothKat are getting on today? Awww bless. It does sooooo make it more real!

Thanx for the recipe Jet. I will print that off today and then get baking when i'm on mat leave! DP wont know what's hit him - i normally hate the kitchen!

Iris - nice work on the list combination. You must have been bored!

Jarm - congrats on the house move! Now you can get all nesty before baby comes.

Berry - DP and I watched Bringing Up Baby too last night. We were both sat there incredulous at the old witch's methods. Why does someone who doesn't have children think that they know it all?! She was so cruel and cold. What's the point in having kids if you're just going to treat them like a machine? Talking of nannies tho, i must admit i do like Jo Frost's methods as they always seem to work and turn the kids around to be much happier than before.

Choudru - i'm with you on the sling thing. Use it when it suits. I never had one with DS and now i deffo want to get one with this LO. Even DP said "i think you should get one" last night when we were watching that programme. So i have official permission to do more shopping! Yay!! I dont think i would want the baby in bed with me tho. I'd be sooooo scared of rolling onto her and squashing her. I know they say you dont do it coz of mother's instinct etc but i once read an article in a mag where this woman brought the baby into bed with her to give it a breast feed. She woke up the next morning to find that she had suffocated the baby in her sleep with her breasts (i think) and the baby was dead. That article has scared me witless and i dont think i could bring myself to put baby in with me now, until she was a little older and could poke me if i got too close or summat.

Anna - Glad your scan went well! It must be lovely seeing them on the screen when you're that far gone. The last time i saw baby was at 22 weeks so i'd love to see her again now!

berrybliss · 26/09/2007 11:36

I'm all up for the Supernanny methods I think that she really understands parents and children. She has a book on newborns and I'm def thinking of buying it.

I'd be really scared of squashing the baby too. I read an article on a mum who fell asleep breastfeeding the baby on the sofa and when she woke up the baby was limp. It had become over heated and died I feel that i'm going to be overly careful until i know that LO more robust!

Talking of slings I've found some lovely ones on Ebay, they come in loads of different colours and aren't too expensive! They are the same ones with the ringpull that were used last night. Plus they also have an Organic cotten range!

Jet- cookies sound lovely...mmmm but I fear if I make them, I will also eat them all!

choudru · 26/09/2007 12:18

What awful stories about suffocating baby in their sleep

I guess I am more easy with it because it's kind of the done thing in asian culture. Not everyone does it but a lot of mothers do and practically all our mothers did it.

Another thing I have in mind from asian culture is the whole postnatal girdle thing. Traditionally, in south asia, after a woman gives birth, she goes through about 40 days of confinement. During this time she is supposed to rest (there is a lot of extended family to help with baby!) and a lady visits to massage her and bind her stomach to help the ribs and uterus to get back to normal. Have heard of similar practises from Malaysian and Ugandan friends.

I know it's quite controversial in the west now because of all the celebrities snapping back into shape 2 minutes after giving birth, but I think i am going to look into it. I believe you can get postnatal gridles that do the same job as the binding would. I couldn't use it after DS because of having emergency c-section but if I get to have my VBAC this time, I may try it.

It doesn't make you lose weight - it just nips everything in and gives you a bit of extra support.

It means you can stop worrying about dieting etc and just concentrate on the baby.

What does everyone think? Feel free to call me a vain WAG-wannabe!

Thanks so much for the recipe jetgirl - will definitely make some this week. Our lovely new neighbours are always sending me delicious treats since they found out I was pregnant (another asian thing - a pregnant woman needs to be fed!) so I might make some for them to say thank you.

RG - I got a huggababy sling with DS - would recommend it.

About supernanny - I love her methods. I use a 'naughty corner' with DS who is 2.5. Have used it for about 4 months and boy does it work. He gets bored of staring at the wall and we usually get a quick 'sorry mama!' and he behaves. I do give him a warning first and often that makes him behave before I've even sent him to the corner. It works wonders in getting him to finish meals, tidy toys away, nip tantrums in the bud, stop fighting etc. I just got so sick of the sound of my own voice yelling at him that I needed to try a different approach. It keeps me much calmer and he knows what's coming when he plays up.

The only trouble is that when other people are around, he plays on their sympathy so it rarely works in company. I guess I can't have it all my way!

Well I am off to eat a tracker bar or 2. Having a shower seems to have sapped me of the last of my energy.

Have a lovely afternoon everyone!

berrybliss · 26/09/2007 12:39

I'm all up for a girdle!
I love having my bump but am looking forward to having a flat stomach again. I can't wait to get back into all of my old clothes and also buy some new ones! I've always been slim and feel underpressure because of my age to get back to my pre-pregnancy shape. Spose i'm a little jealous too and couln't stand DP eyeing up other girls!! So thats my insentive.

But I wouldn't crash diet or anything silly like that as i'm planning to breastfeed and know how important it is to stay healthy.

LizzieO · 26/09/2007 12:40

aft'noon ladies - right all drop and do 20 pelvic floors
right now we all feel better for that (said in in tone of the 'BEEPS' milkshakers will know what i mean )

CONGRATULATIONS SGK - i actually feel all emotional and bit weepy, i'm sending Kath and the little boy all the warmth and love i can,

missed the bringing up baby thing, but def wanna get a sling, i was thinking of Calin bleu which look nice and easy to use, they come in at around £30, anyone used this ?

berrybliss - i will check out e-bay

chouru - post natal girdle - interesting (strokes chin) hmmm let me know what you find

hope you all have a blindingly good bump day

lisad123 · 26/09/2007 13:24

just wanted to pop in and update you all on SGK and her DS.
He is in special care but doing well, his out of incubater and in a cot with warming pad.
Maria is waiting to be discharged, as she is unable to sleep on the ward but sounds well.
Looks like your lot are jumpin quenes too.
I got to be there to see him born, which was odd as my own DD was only born on friday.

Take care of yourselfs and your LO.
Lisa

Lisad123 - thanks for the update and please send SGK and her DS our best wishes

Choudru - my exMIL told me when I had DD that it was the norm to wear a girdle as late as the 1960s (obviously went out of fashion with all the bra burning ) it sounds like a really good idea though as it'd give your muscles a chance to get back to normal whilst being held in the right place rather than being pulled by extra weight. Have you found somewhere that sells them then? (I'd be interested in giving it a go)

LizzieO - I've got a stretchy Calin Bleu sling which is lovely but soooooooo much material (I'm not very big) Though it was a bit of a faff getting used to I found it brilliant for times when DS turned into a velcrobaby (ie overtired/poorly)right up until he was 14/15 mths (stopped using it purely because i couldn't get it right when bump got in the way). I've got an Ergo baby carrier too which I think I'll be using more this time (for speed as much as anything). I wish I'd made a material sling now though as they're a bit pricey for what they are. If you want dimensions let me know.

RGPargy - yes, I was bored this morning. Very . DS woke at 2.30 and i managed to doze for about 1/2 hour between then and 4 so got up and started faffing. Pooped now though so may go for a nap whilst DH has taken him out for a drive)

Jetgirl - That recipe looks gorgeous! Can you freeze them? (thinks about post birth gorging session )

FCH - your boobs can start leaking anytime I think (now is definately not early IMO) Steady with the tweaking though as nipple stimulation is a popular way to encourage labour to start

Had my growth scan this morning and LO is still fine and dandy (measuring a couple of weeks bigger than dates, but always has been) Just got to hope he/she doesn't put in too much of a growth spurt from here on in! We had a lovely close up of the face and he/she has a hand up round his/her head (no wonder the headbuts on my cervix have hurt!) Can't wait to meet this one - well, maybe a few more weeks getting excited now!!

fiona76 · 26/09/2007 14:03

Hi all lots has happened in the last day. I had high BP again at the GP so they sent me down to the day assessment unit at the hospital but it was fine there. I felt a bit foolish but they were really nice and said the GPs machine was probably not working properly.
I'm a little peeved as I was going to go my first aquanatal class today and was looking forward to it. Does anyone else go?? I'm also starting antenatal yoga this week so looking forward to that. Don't normally have time or energy to do nice things like this when I'm working so its good to be off and concerntrating on myself and bump.
Thanks for the link to eastenders site I only started watching about 5 years ago after I moved here from NZ so was confused as to who stephen was but read the web link and now all caught up.

RGPargy · 26/09/2007 14:31

Lisa - thanx for the update!! Fabulous that you saw him come into the world too!

Choudru - i'd also be interested the post natal girdle thing, although i wonder if they do them in pie eater sizes?? Deffo something to look into tho! I will deffo look into slings too.

Iris - I'd deffo take the opportunity of having a snooze while DH is out with DS! Awwww re your scan - how lovely.

FCH - No boob leakage here either. I'll have to tell DP about leaving out the tweakage - he might just stop pestering me for "it" if i tell him that. Honestly, i just dont have the energy any more for that sort of thing and find it such a struggle just to turn over in bed, let alone get up to any other sort of acrobatics!

Feeling quite tired today. Also for the last two days i've been having palpatations and my breech baby appears to have dropped too. I spoke to the MW and she said not to worry about the dropping thing, but was a bit concerned about my palpatations. I'm not a huge coffee/tea drinker so i'm sure it's not that. However, I've noticed that it's only been for the last couple of days, which coincides with when we bought some new squash that we dont normally get. Could it be giving me some sort of reaction do you think? The MW said to stop chocolate, but seeing as i've eaten it all the way through this pg with absolutely no problems, i dont see how that could cause an effect now. What do you all think?

RGPargy · 26/09/2007 14:32

Fiona - I'm also going to pregnancy yoga the day after i finish work. It'll be nice to concentrate on me and baby too. i also plan to go swimming.

Oh how nice to be waddling swanning around doing stuff like that. I cannot wait!

sparklygothkat · 26/09/2007 14:41

HELLO!!!!!

I am home!!!! Callum Eden, as we are thinking of calling DS2, is still in SCBU and doind well, he wasn't put on any breathing equiment, and is being tube fed with formula until my milk comes in.
I decided to come home, as it was far too hot on the ward and couldn't sleep at all last night.
It was an intense labour once it went to every 3 minutes, and I could only have G&A at that point because it was too late for anything else. I got very annoyed with the G&A as it wasn't working too well. I remember saying something about it not being that bad last time with Dd2, though I am sure it was.
At one point I thought I was ready and said to MW that I could feel pressure but was only 6cm at that point, and said 'fuck is that it??' But she said that his head was right down and that was what I could feel. 1/2 hour later he was born
He cried straight away and his apger scores were 8 and 9.
My waters broke just before I started pushing and they went with a bang all over DH, and midwife
anyway, going to pick up my other kids soon, and cuddle up with them and have some sleep.

RGPargy · 26/09/2007 14:46

oooo Deja Vu!!

As i said in the other thread, well done!! Go have some well earned kip!

geekInPigtails · 26/09/2007 14:49

Hello sparkly! Congratulations, sounds like everything and everyone is doing amazingly well considering and what a gorgeous name! You just take care of yourself and LO now.

LizzieO · 26/09/2007 15:46

Goodness SGK i can't quite believe your here chatting to us on MN and the little one is out already many many congrats, do you know how long he will be iin for, are you going to go back in on a transitional ward with him ?

Iris66 - oooh yes please i would love dimensions for material sling, do you have any idea of the best material to use for slings ?
