Congratulations again, Sparkly. It does make it seem so much more real, this actually having the baby, out of womb and into the world. I was just lecturing mine yesterday on how she must stay put another 2-3 weeks, then she can come on out whenever she feels like it.

My DP is coming a week from Monday (actually late Sunday night) and I'd like to have a while more with just him before the baby comes out.

geekInPigtails · 26/09/2007 16:07

LOL aikigypsy, my DH gave our LO the same lecture last night when I told him about sparkly

choudru · 26/09/2007 16:30

Sparkly - I do hope you're taking it easy. Make sure you let yourself rest hon - never mind rushing around (mind you, rushing around cuddling the kids is allowed )

I was the same when DS was born - couldn't wait to get out of hospital and just used to go back to visit him everyday. There's nothing worse than being kept awake by all the other newborns when your's is in the SCBU.

I did a little research on the girdle thing. Gowri Motha did a girdle for Agent Provocateur which is £60 (ouch!). She is the birth guru who advised the likes of Gwyneth etc and does the whole natural birth method stuff.

£60 wouldn't be so bad but it seems you need to buy 2. One for just after birth and one for a couple of weeks later when you'll need a smaller size. Check out the misc section of Gowri Girdle

I'm sure you can get adjustable ones so will investigate those - hopefully they might be a lot cheaper without the celebrity name tag.

Iris - from what I can gather on the internet it was common practise in the 1950s and is making a bit of a comeback now. Can everyone go and ask their grans and get some feedback please!

RG - they do them in all sizes. And I would give up the squash first and see if that helps before - I can hardly say the words - giving up CHOCOLATE!

It could be caffiene overload though - you might have to bite the bullet and try some herbal tea instead. I think I should take my own advise and drink mint tea instead of coffee.

Am knackered again today. Couldn't muster up the energy to take DS out to toddler group so will have to find one to take him to tomorrow. Did put his name down at local nursery though so did something useful.

Sparkly - give Callum a big cuddle from his auntie choudru.

Check out Post Natal Bodyshapers for some more info. This is another one that costs £60 and when you find you need a smaller one, you send it back to be altered for a further £22.50.

Wow, thanx for the info on those body shaper things Choudru!

Incidentally, i have been drinking lots of water today and haven't had a cup of tea since mid-morning. I then went out for lunch with a friend from work and had a small glass of vino (naughty i know ). I have to say tho, that since about an hour after coming back from lunch i have felt alot calmer, palpatation-wise and i think they have gone now. I've had chocolate today too () so it cant have been that. I really am starting to think it's the squash. How peculiar! I wonder if the wine somehow had a calming effect - it's a relaxant after all, isn't it? Think i'll check out the ingrediants in the squash tonight and try and establish which one of the 50,000 bad things in it was the one that set my heart racing!

I dont know if any of you ladies have ever been foolish enough to take slimming pills like i once did, but i felt a bit like i did when i was on them. My mind was a bit skittish too, IYSWIM. Now that the effects have worn off, i have a slight headache too. It's a bit worrying really isn't it!

Right, off to look at girdles!

Pixiefish · 26/09/2007 17:26

HI SGK- congrats and welcome Callum Eden.

RG- what's int he squash???? Some squash sends kids hyper so it could be affecting you as well

empen · 26/09/2007 17:28

I have only just found this thread - am getting used to using MN. I am due on the 11th November but am having elective c section and am waiting for a date at 39 weeks to be confirmed. Am having a little boy. Already have a gorg 5 year old girl but this is my partners first so he is dead excited.
I am feeling like a big heffer and cannot wait for this to be over so I can have my body back and my baby boy in my arms instead of him kicking me in the boob!!!

fiona76 · 26/09/2007 17:50

Welcome Empen!! I have just had a nice afternoon nap and and feeling better after the dramas of the morning. I am ravenous though need to go and raid the fridge.

littleoldme · 26/09/2007 18:01

The biggest of congratualtions Sparkly

FCH - I've had the odd leak for about the last four weeks so I guess it isn't too early.

RG I'm with you bigtime on the babies in bed thing. A freind of a freind suffocated his little boy when they fell asleep together on the sofa
Hope the palpatations calm down soon. I'd give the squah a miss, see if it makes a difference.

Choudru - v interesting on the whole girdle thing. I've never heard of it before but it does seems to make sense.

Welcome Empen. The more the merrier

thelady · 26/09/2007 18:39

iris66: I'm a migrant from the Dec list - due 4/12/07 - just in case this sproglet decides to obligingly arrive a little early. That's why you couldn't find me.

SGK: congrats, and I hope the shock has worn off a little bit by today.

thelady · 26/09/2007 19:05

Floanna: Jedburgh is lovely - for a holiday, which is why we run a hotel (The Spread). If I wasn't so busy with the business, I think I'd be screamingly bored as there is no social life outisde of the (mostly male) pubs....

TMI alert: my boobs have been leaking since about 17 weeks but at least only when touched so I've not needed pads or anything yet. Only a matter of time, though, methinks.

Thanks for the recipe jetgirl - all I have to do now is get into the kitchen when DH isn't doing his chef thing

LizzieO: I've been told that a sari length is a good basic sling - and lightweight and compact to fold up too. I grew up in Africa, so am used to seeing baby-on-back but not tiny ones. I'm hoping to pop up to Edinburgh to a Sling wearers meetup before the sproglet arrives for some advice though. Suspect we'll get DH a pouch as he won't have the patience for all that wrapping and folding.

Re. Cosleeping: I've heard from several places that bed is one thing, but a chair, sofa or beanbag is a very bad idea. Apparently the idea is a very firm mattress, light bedding for you, and not if you're exhausted, drunk, or otherwise under the influence. You can also now buy little '3-sided-box' things to put baby in to make sure the bedding doesn't cover them and/or you won't roll onto them. Think I saw one in the babies-r-us catalogue....

Whoof - sorry it's so long!

ChocolateHobnob · 26/09/2007 19:45

Hi all

Sparkly, I can't believe you're on Mnet chatting away! Congratulations; sounds like you did so well. And nice name!

RG, I am amused by the squash giving you palpitations. Let's face it, it's good it wasn't the chocolate!

Fiona, I had the same thing last week - was sent to the day assessment unit with high bp from the midwife, but my bp was fine at the hospital. Think I rush about too much and get hyped up! I went back to mw today and bp was normal again.

Welcome Empen!

Choudru, the girdle sounds scary to me. Does it hurt??

Iris, glad scan went well.

I'm 35 weeks today, which feels quite far on! I know there's still ages to go. But I'm not wishing the time away cos I haven't got myself ready yet!

Have a good evening all, if you can get comfy!

jetgirl · 26/09/2007 19:56

Nice to have you back Sparkly, and good news about Callum. Must be all our positive vibes!

iris - yes you can freeze the cookies.

choudru - at this rate we'll all be buying girdles so we can keep eating cookies! My granny used to wear a girdle, I remember asking her when I was quite young why she was wearing 2 pairs of pants, and then wanting to copy her!

Hi Empen - I'm due on the same date, but might also be having a c-section - talking about my options with mw next week. What's the advice you've received been like? So far, mine's been great from mw but crap from obstetrician.

Had a lovely day with DD today. We did some painting, including painting our feet and walking on paper which was a lot of fun. Mummyhood is full of these lovely moments!

iris66 · 26/09/2007 20:06

Sparkly - can't believe you're out already! Are they planning on keeping Callum in for long? (lovely name btw) He's obviously a strong little fella - not even oxygen? impressive!! Hope you get some proper rest now that you can move a little easier and enjoy your newly expanded family

Empen - welcome to our ever expanding herd (though if one more person says "ooh you've not long to go", in a manner suggesting I'm so vast that I'm clearly going to go into labour in front of them, I'm going to scream!)

RGPargy - what on earth have you been drinking??! Glad you're feeling better but, as everyone said - it's probably a rogue E number (they often hide them these days by putting their full names on the label rather than the E. Sneaky) With any luck it'll help your sleep too.

choudru - thanks for the links. When you consider that a months membership of a gym/leisure centre is around £30 (and I, for one, break out in a sweat at even the thought of treadmills & rowing machines ) the £60 (or £120 even) doesn't seem such a bad deal. After I had DS I remember being really breathless and the MW said it was because all the muscles (including your diaphragm) get so stretched by the baby that they can be a bit loose for a week or so. If a girdle sorts that out alone I'd be chuffed. (By the way - I've gone right off Leeds now . Both me & DS now have the most hideous colds since dropping off DD. Your bugs are clearly too strong for the likes of us !!)

thelady - ahaaaaa mystery solved. Sari length is a good explanation of the sling size. You must be shattered being pg and running a business!! Is your trade mainly seasonal so you get a rest in winter (you're going to need it this winter aren't you!!)?

iris66 · 26/09/2007 20:08

jetgirl - you have no idea how happy you have just made me (I shall be out buying ingredients tomorrow!)

Evening!

Congratulations SGK - you & your family must be thrilled that Callum is doing so well, what a star! Hope you are taking care of yourself too.

Had a class of 27 today so I am pooped! Definately feeling tired again now (32+1). Iris I am also fedup with people nodding at my belly and saying "not long now!" Still have 4 weeks left at work and then I have to move house! I wish I could start my mat leave earlier but I would feel like I was dropping my colleagues and my students in it. Sorry - don't where that moan came from, thought I was feeling ok!

Cookies may be the answer . When I go on mat leave I shall be napping, baking and swimming (floating).

Going to get my hair cut this weekend and feel like doing something radical (has been long forever) but all my friends have warned me against doing anything rash. Anyone else getting the urge to cut all their hair off?!

saraloumadam - moan away - you're entitled to, you're pregnant .
hair : I had mine cut really really short when pg with DS. It looked fab whilst I had time to faff around with it but factoring in a new baby, I looked mostly haystack like and wished I'd left it long enough to ponytail out the way! (not trying to put you off - I'm 40 so it takes me a while to look normal in the morning anyway but, for the record, I am growing it to a ponytailable length currently)

Loopy - glad your appointment went well Good job you're strong eh!
I totally agree with you about the co-sleeping positioning being natural - I would rather DS had stayed in his carrycot more than he did however, but when they want a feed and you're on your knees with tiredness (sort of makes a mockery of the "don't co-sleep if you're overtired" thing) I've bought a bed guard this time so I can sleep on either side without worrying about the LO falling out.

empen · 26/09/2007 20:53

Jet Girl. I must say that my experience this pregnancy has not been good. If it had been my first I would be very scared by now as I feel I have been left to get on with things - maybe that is normal with 2nd pg's but I had a 5 year gap!!
I moved from Cambridge to North Yorks 5 weeks ago and it took 3 weeks to get an appointment with the mw - only cause I made a fuss otherwise it was going to be longer! She was really aloof and kept talking over me. I am still waiting for an appt to see a consultant at the hospital for appt to c section. MW then announced that they may make me have normal delivery despite the fact that my consultant at cambridge had already agreed!! All a bit scary as not given any info or feedback!

JARM · 26/09/2007 20:58

Evening all.

Feeling really emotional today, not sure whats going on, but feel like bursting into tears every 2 mins! Little wriggle-chops in my tummy is driving me demented, he is a strong one i swear, his kicks and movements are taking my breath away half the time.

Anyone would think that being my 3rd time, i would be a dab-hand at all this, but im still absolutely petrified of the birth and although i know deep down i "enjoy" it, im always scared something will go wrong.

Am also very tired at the moment, i guess trying to get my house sorted before little boy arrives is stressing me out somewhat. Dh and I are just too tired in the evenings to bother, so tend to be doing a lot of it at the weekend with my dad there to help, but then of course we end up playing catch up during the week!

Just had a tesco shop delivered, and it included newborn disposable nappies (have got cloth, but those first few days/week of meconium is NASTY!) for the hospital bag, that I still havent packed despite my dad being on at me to be ready! HAHAHA - ready?! With my house looking like this?! I dont even know where my bag is that i usually take into hospital!

So girls, whats the essentials on the list for the hospital bag....

so far I have

FOR BABY :

2 x muslin squares
2 x bibs
3 x vests
3 x sleepsuits
1 x hat
1 x scratch mitts
1 x cardigan
1 x snowsuit for coming home
1 pack of disposable nappies
cotton wool
baby wipes
Awaiting delivery of cellular BLANKET!

FOR ME :

Nothing yet!

RGPargy · 26/09/2007 21:02

Evening all!

Welcome Empem! Hope you can keep up!

Re the squash - it was just a "no added sugar" summer fruits squash - Asda own brand. I can only think that it is something in it that has made my heart go bonkers. I've been fine all afternoon/evening so it certainly does look like it was the culprit.

Thelady - blimey, you've got your work cut out for you!! DP and i are always looking for nice places to go and stay for a weekend so we may have to pay you a visit next year lol

Can someone please tell me what third stage labour is and why it would need to be assisted or otherwise? Honestly, with my lack of knowledge you'd think i've not had a baby before wouldn't you?!!

As for the hair, i'm a little desperate to actually have my braids done again as this would mean zero maintenance. just stick it up and it's done. But unfortunately it's no where near long enough to have the braided extensions put on. Plus DP is reluctant to see me with long hair as he thinks i look great with short hair. Bless. Still, i'm having my hair done yet again next weekend (cut and colour) but it'll probably be one of the last times i get my hair done for a while. Having short hair means high maintenance!

RGPargy · 26/09/2007 21:05

JARM - i have all the intentions of packing a bag for me and baby "just in case", but as i'm planning a HWB, i'm very reluctant. I think i might think more about it when i'm on mat leave.
