Ah, thanks Eggy. I won't have that done, I'm not planning on having the NHS Downs test anyway so wouldn't want anything else.

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/01/2019 19:37

Twittle is this your first?
I had all the blood tests to check if I was a carrier for thalessaemia, sickle cell disease and if I was rhesus negative etc with my first, but I figured if all those things were negative with the first baby they will be negative again with subsequent babies, so I’d rather not be a human pin cushion if I don’t have to.
I’ve not had Downs Syndrome testing before, but from what I’ve been told, what used to be one combined test for Downs, Edwards and Patau syndromes are now separate tests? So you can opt to test for the two conditions that aren’t compatible with life, but not test for Downs? If that is the case, I think I’d like to know the probability of baby having a fatal condition. A diagnosis of Downs Syndrome would affect my decision about continuing a pregnancy, so I’d rather not know about it.

TwittleBee · 24/01/2019 19:49

Nope it's my 2nd DC (hopefully) and 5th pregnancy MyBreadIsEggy Maybe it's just different area to area but MW said that they redo all tests again and I didn't question that, she's got all my previous details too, she was reading them out and making sure it was still the same. I suppose things like infectious diseases I just agreed to as although I 100% trust my DH you do hear of some horror stories on MN!

OP posts:
MyBreadIsEggy · 24/01/2019 19:52

Twittle yes I’ll have the infectious disease screening - purely because my DH is in the military and travels the world a lot, especially in countries were certain diseases are more prevalent, and it’s relatively easy for him to come into contact with them without having sex with anyone Confused

MunchyMunchkin · 24/01/2019 19:55

@twittlebee.
Fine re chicken pox if you’ve had it before.

TwittleBee · 24/01/2019 20:02

Yeah good thinking to get that one done for sure then MyBreadIsEggy !

Is anyone having the Strep B test? I think it has to be done privately. I saw something on insta a while ago and it got me thinking, I had PPROM with DS and we both got sepsis too so wondered if Strep B might have caused that idk though, haven't really looked into it properly?

Thank you Munchy !

OP posts:
TwittleBee · 24/01/2019 20:03

I'll be under consultant led care due to PPROM so I suppose I can ask then what causes it

OP posts:
MyBreadIsEggy · 24/01/2019 20:14

I’ve never been tested for strep B.
I also had PROM with DD, but no signs of infection or anything else untoward - so maybe that’s why?

stroan · 24/01/2019 20:14

What is the difference been the NIPT and the normal screening they do? Is it accuracy?

I’m having the usual NHS screening because I would rather know and would worry otherwise.

I had Group B Strep in my last pregnancy, they found it when I had a UTI. They said they would treat me as though I have it for any subsequent pregnancies but I’ll be having a section so it’s less of an issue. The only thing that concerns me about the test is that you could have it (or not!) at the time of testing but could be a completely different result at the time of birth.

We’re definitely Team Yellow. I love a surprise and this is probably the only real surprise in life 😂

Karigan195 · 24/01/2019 20:19

As I understand it there are levels of screening for downs etc. There is the preliminary risk assessment everyone gets if they want it. Then the NIPT which is non invasive blood test and scan measurements. Finally there is the invasive testing which carries a risk of miscarriage. NIPT can exclude it so you don’t need to run the risk

boodles101 · 24/01/2019 20:19

I'll be team yellow too. Didn't find out with DS and won't find out this time either. DH would rather know but is happy to wait of that's what I want. Plus he's already expressed that he would prefer a boy again, so I think he might freak out if we find out and it's a girl!
I would just have the normal nhs screening too, no further private testing unless a high risk result comes back.
No more brown discharge here so just trying to relax and not panic too much.

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/01/2019 20:26

We are debating whether to find out the sex or not!
We already have a Dd and a Ds, so a surprise would be fine. I’m just an impatient bugger Grin

stroan · 24/01/2019 20:33

Every time I think about the huge pile of girls clothes under my bed, I think we should find out. But I don’t think I’ll be swayed. Our trust don’t tell you at the anomaly scan anyway so would have to have a private one.

I’m still really struggling with nausea and DD now has D&V. She puked all over me, herself and the hall earlier. Poor thing, I just stood there screaming like a banshee for DH because I thought I was going to be sick too. So grateful for DH being an absolute star and dealing with it all.

MunchyMunchkin · 24/01/2019 20:40

@twittlebee group b strep screening is tricky. The pathogen can come and go as part of normal vaginal flora so a negative test at 37 weeks doesn’t mean it won’t be there at delivery and neither does a positive one.
My husband wrote the group b strep guidance for wales and wouldn’t recommend and we are all for extra stuff if needed!

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/01/2019 20:51

stroan I’m the same but with boys clothes!!
I’ve kept everything of Ds’s from 3-6 months upwards, so would be really helpful if new baby is another boy!

LaBelleSausage · 24/01/2019 20:55

We tend to dress DS in a pretty unisex way so it doesn’t really make a difference if we have a boy or a girl, DH keeps calling my stomach ‘her’ and ‘she’ though, and I don’t really want him to do that while we don’t know.

DustyDoorframes · 24/01/2019 20:55

@Easterbuns1 I'm in the same position as you- no screening for downs etc with my first two, but wavering now. It seems more complicated with two other small people to consider!

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/01/2019 20:59

Most of the 3-6 and 6-9 month stuff I have from when DS was a baby is gender neutral - he wore lots of grey and beige!! But after that, a lot of it is very boyish, dinosaurs, cars, trains etc because he became obsessed with dinosaurs and Thomas The Tank Engine at around a year old Grin

Megan2018 · 24/01/2019 21:06

We’ll test for everything going. If NIPT shows high probability of a trisomy then we know the right thing for is is to terminate (after invasivevtest to confirm). I’ve had my bloods done for all the infectious things already.
If there is anything else recommended we’ll have that too.

I’m going for the full medicalised route-if they can be persuaded to throw in an elective section even better. I want all the drugs though, all!

stroan · 24/01/2019 21:06

All of the baby stuff is gender neutral and colourful, but we also have some lovely dresses. I’ll be sad if I have to get rid of it (will keep my favourite bits) but I think it might be easier when I have a new baby and all of their stuff to squeeze into the house!

PastaSauceHoarder · 24/01/2019 21:11

Oh god I really need to read into all this testing. Blush My first pregnancy really wasn't long ago and yet I've forgotten all of it! My midwife was telling me about all the different tests this morning yet I've just realised I didn't take any of it in - can I blame baby brain this early?!

I'll definitely be finding out the sex if this pregnancy ends up going well. I'm ridiculously impatient, I couldn't take not knowing!

Easterbuns1 · 24/01/2019 21:17

@DustyDoorframes definitely the case yes.

@Megan2018 I will be consultant led and elective section this time same as my previous.

jazzyjellybeans · 24/01/2019 21:21

Thanks for the new thread @TwittleBee

I'm definitely a geriatric Mum at 38 so definitely opting for a private harmony test at 10 weeks. We have agreed that we will find out the sex at that point if we get that far.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 24/01/2019 21:41

Thanks for the new thread @TwittleBee. Wonder how many threads we’ll get to by the end!

Anyone else’s gag reflex off the chart? I must look so strange on the train in the morning trying desperately not to gag and retch.

I’ve got a blood test for parvovirus (slapped cheek) booked in for this Saturday following DD’s bout of what looked like it last week. Could really be doing without that and the added stress if it is positive.

PastaSauceHoarder · 24/01/2019 21:48

Oh gosh I really hope I get to the end thread @BridgetJonesDaiquiri, suddenly feeling really nervous now. Sad
