Quick question about this GTT thing. Does everyone have this, as I don't recall having it with Becky?

Also, the strepB issue. I didn't know that existed last time around, but have read a bit about it in one of the baby magazines and it sounds awful. Has anyone been tested for that? Is it something they do automatically or do you have to ask/pay for it?

Thank you v much!!

Is anyone else hooked on Dancing on Ice? Duncan James in Lycra - mmmmmmmmmmm!!

CaptainDippy · 28/01/2007 20:26

Hi! The GTT thing is a test for Gestational Diabeties. You only need to be tested if you are in a "high risk" category - I am not too sure what all the categories are; but I know one is if your BMI is higher than a certain point (no fear of that there having met you SOSPL!! [ink]) and another is if they find lots of glucose in your wee. There's various other factors too - So nothing for you to worry yourself about hon!! I'm sure someone can be a bit more informative than that!!

As for StrepB, around 60% of all women are carriers, but your status can change from week-to-week. (i.e. you can be tested positive one week and negative the next - all a bit "hit and miss" ) I was tested StrepB pos in my 2nd PG after a bout of food posioning put me in hospital. They think the StrepB might have been why I delivered prematurely, but then again, it might not. They gave me anti-botics in labour to make sure everything was super safe for bubba and I'll probably have to have them this time (having a homebirth, but no prob having IV AB's at home apparentely!) So, yes, I do think it is worth all women getting checked out for StrepB. As for paying etc- it depends on your hospital / LHA - some will do it free, some won't. I have to have a HVS at 28 weeks to test for StrepB, but I am also paying to have one closer to delivery (i.e. 35 weeks) as I am having a homebirth, my MW said it would help a lot to know my status nearer to the time. I hope that helps in some weird, drivvly sort of way!!

My journey back was fine BTW - met some crazy drunk people on the final leg home, which was a little scary, but the nice ticket man looked after me, bless! I got back well after the girls were in bed in the end as my friend picked me up from the station and I went back to hers to look after her 3 while she and her hubby popped out to a party for a couple of hours!!!! I must be mad!! She is a really good friend though and has done loads for me over the past couple of years, so it was the least I could do - Besides, I ate her left-over chilli and watched crap on TV, which was a much nicer way to unwind than tidying up all the mess DH and the girls had made that day!!!!

off to bed .....

muminabigtumi · 28/01/2007 21:07

Hi
Just watched the Richard Hammond car crash...... - he was SO lucky to survive that - I love top gear!
SOSPL - I am having the GGT cos my BMI is above 25 - in this area they do it routinely at 28 weeks if you are a bit lardy like me! .

CD - glad you had a nice day and enjoyed your relax at your friends house.

re the group B strep - I would get tested if it were not for the fact I'm having an elective section and from what I gather the infection is passed on as baby passes thru the birth canal on its way out....so thinking it will therefore not apply to me...if this is not the case would be grateful if someone whould let me know! lol
Right off to get ready for bed - took another pic of bump tonight and I think I have exploded in the last 2 weeks - I'll see if I can add it to my profile - I feel like a whale....
Night all
x

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 28/01/2007 21:12

CD, that is brilliantly informative. You should train as a midwife!
I think I'll ask my mw about the strepB thing as I will see her this Thursday.

Glad you got home ok - and didn't have to tidy up. It's funny how us ladies manage to tidy up as well as everything else. Whenever I come back after having left dh in charge, the place is a bomb site!

Have a lovely sleep!

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 28/01/2007 21:15

MIABT, thanks for the info. I am sure strepB can only be passed on through a fanjo birth, BTW, you look so slim in the photos, not that a BMI of 25 sounds particularly high.

muminabigtumi · 28/01/2007 21:20

Thanks SOSPL - My BMI is actually 32 and I weight 15 stone 10 pounds at present put on 1 and a half stone so far this pg - I think I carry it well....
Am seriously stressing about the difference between my 26 week pic and the one I took today though....why can't we just relax and stop worrying.

I have a real issue with my weight anyway and was losing weight before I got pregnant this time. At least I know I am healthy and that matters more to me than a "weight in pounds" at the moment...as I've said before - can tackle it after the birth...maybe the triple scoop Baskin Robbins Ice cream at the cinema today was not a good plan! lol
x

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 28/01/2007 21:33

MIABT, I really do think you look great.

I have put on a stone and a half as well, but am not bothered at all.

I have to admit my BMI is pretty low, as I have a very speedy metabolism - sickening to hear for some I know, and I am sure it will slow down as I age! I lost quite a lot of weight when Becky turned 2 - again not on purpose, but B was a nightmare - biting, pinching etc. and I was incredibly stressed and down about it all - a friend stopped seeing us because B bit her daughter.

As long as one is healthy, it really doesn't matter imho. x

maveta · 29/01/2007 08:13

Here I think everyone gets the GTT as routine and I don´t know about Strep B but if they don´t do it, I´ll get it done privately. My friend had it and I think it got her all stressed out about the birth but in the end all was fine.

Got another midwife appt on wednesday so I´ll get weighed again. I´ve told dh that if she makes any more comments about my weight he better be ready to pull me off her! Lol (or not??....) Again, like last time, I feel fine about my size, I am definitely growing but it still seems mostly concentrated on my tummy, although no doubt dh would say some of it has leaked down my bum and thighs so am totally not in the mood for her to give me a complex.

geordiemacminx · 29/01/2007 08:53

Morning ladies - hope we are well!!

maveta · 29/01/2007 09:00

Oh wow GMM! How amazing, you must be so thrilled! That makes me want to rush out and get one, but I don´t know where to go!! He is absolutely gorgeous, what a wonderful thing to have to tide you over til the birth, am very

geordiemacminx · 29/01/2007 09:09

I am rather chuffed to be honest.. I have him as the wall paper on my fone, so every time I look at him he makes me smile..

He's got exactly the same up-turned nose that I had when I was a baby!! And the dvd is going to be great to show all hos girlfriends!

Have you managed to get your cat back yet?

maveta · 29/01/2007 09:32

GMM - aargh how sweet! Makes my scratchy old 16 week scan pale into insignificance!

Yes, he finally found his way out of the house he was stuck in last night but we still had to remove the bars from the bathroom window and jump onto the roof to catch him. He appears to be scared of jumping onto the windowsill, I think because of the bars, although he goes through them just fine.

I´m not sure how to help him get over this fear?? We have 2 windows that lead out onto the roof, the one they normally go out of has a little dresser in front of it on our side, which is how he gets out. So today I opened the OTHER window and he meowed and meowed but eventually jumped up and got out just fine. So in theory he should now not be scared of coming IN as the windows are the same height inside and out.

If not, I give up

geordiemacminx · 29/01/2007 09:39

I tihnk you'll just have to let him get on with it... cats are'nt stupid...although they pretend to be...

I'm sure after missing a meal or 2 he would manage to over come his fear... although maybe after a couple of days you might have to rescue him

claricebean · 29/01/2007 09:42

Hi everyone,

GMM, your photos arelovely.

Maveta, in Cordoba the strep B test is standard for everyone, don't know about the rest of Spain. Can't remember when they do it exactly - around 35 weeks I think. Also, here they treat you with antibiotics pre birth rather than through an IV during labour. I didn't have it with DS when I was here, but did with DD2 who I had in London. They were still trying to get the drip in my hand when I announced, rather urgently, that I needed to push, so I got a total of about 6 minutes of antibiotics rather than 4 hours.

Hope everyone's OK today.

maveta · 29/01/2007 09:48

Thanks for the info claricebean, I´ll ask the midwife when I see her this week, although she tends to be very dismissive and patronising if we ask about anything that is not immediately relevant Would be good to know though.

Just bought the CUTEST blue striped dungarees from blooming marvellous, and got THAT breastfeeding book aswell as a couple of other little bits. Love waiting for packages to arrive! Although I have to say I am really disappointed at how much all of these sites want to charge to send to Spain, it´s not the other side of the world FGS. They added on 25 pounds to a 50 pound order. Instead will have to send it all via my sis in the UK which is only 4 pounds and she can bring it out.

Luckily mum is out there this weekend so she can get it for me quite quickly but still... claricebean please send on any recommendations of spanish sites or sites that deliver here for reasonable delivery charges!! x

maveta · 29/01/2007 09:51

GMM - you´re right of course, we know we´ve been too soft so far and are going to have to take a harder line with him. It´s just hard to when one minute he´s there and we could have helped him in and the next we haven´t seen him for 3 nights and don´t know if he´s alright or not. Sigh.. my mum says it´s all good practice for parenthood Although I hope if my child was stuck on the roof I would get him in rather than leaving him to work it out. Or is that not quite what she meant, do you think??

Bramshott · 29/01/2007 10:00

Morning all! Not much to say, but just wanted to check in and say how much I enjoyed the SE meet up on Sat. It was lovely to meet you all! Hope everyone got home okay - I got home pretty quickly and DH had cooked seabass - yum.

Had a couple of bad nights sleep over the weekend (you know the sort - up for a wee about 4 times, backache, heartburn, can't get comfortable etc) so am feeling a bit overwhelmed by this week already. Also think I have an ingrowing toenail caused by my compression stockings, so that's another thing to trot off to the doctors about, to add to the two appointments I have this week already! DD also really snotty and grumpy this morning.

Right, that's enough of my moans. On the plus side, at least it is warm-ish, and I have only 10 weeks to go! Arrggh, how did that happen!

glitterkitty · 29/01/2007 10:30

Morning all- so reassuring to know I'm not the only person whos finding the weight thing tricky. I was on a diet and the fattest I had ever been when I got pg- and I know I have put on 2 stone so far. And am only 5ft. I look like a zepplin. am trying to stay positive but sometimes I feel so unattractive. And cant even paint my bloody toenails now!!!

Great photos GMM! And sorry about ur overwhelming Monday Bramshott, maybe you need some extra chocolate.

Katy44 · 29/01/2007 10:38

miabt - I completely agree about support and benefits issue - my grandma has dementia and we fought and fought but got nowhere! My comments were based on the assumption that not everyone can have bad experiences
I know exactly what you mean about feeling useless, and powerless
Anyway, off to read the rest of this thread - time for a new one?

glitterkitty · 29/01/2007 10:49

Oh, can someone tell me what 'that bf book' is please? I think I missed the original post about it...

CaptainDippy · 29/01/2007 10:56

Feeling hungry, but don't know what to eat ......

CaptainDippy · 29/01/2007 11:57

Hey!!!? Where'd everyone go!!!!?

geordiemacminx · 29/01/2007 12:04

I'm still here CD, but I think thats about it.. just flipping back an forwards as I'm trying to find discount codes for mothercare as I want to order nursery stuff...

You managed to find yourself something to eat yet?
