Welcome to the 13th April 2015 babies thread!

The stats thread is here and we have a handy spreadsheet here

If anyone wants to join the FB group who hasn’t already, PM me your email address and I’ll send you an invite!

We’re in the home stretch ladies, we've had six babies, how many more threads can we manage before the last baby is here?

Its just the wheezing, her chest sounds so tight, when she takes a breath its like a squeaky door. Its so loud I dashed up to check on her and tried to give her more inhaler in her sleep. She looks fairly comfortable when she's nor coughing but she sounds dreadful. I'm trying not to panic but its flooding down my face in tears instead Sad I feel quite frightened but I'm pretty sure ringing 111 for reassurance would mean an unnecessary trip to the OOH Dr when she is actually asleep and most of the time I would think waking a fairly comfortably sleeping poorly baby was a stupid idea. It feels very scary though, I love her so much I don't want to make the wrong choices.

daholster · 19/03/2015 22:17

Thanks for the reassurance re asthma - I grew out of mine too. Mum didn't, her lungs are terrible and she said "well these things can skip a generation" Hmm Not the positive thinking I was after! Feeling like I may as well just sit and cry tonight!!! Where is the strong mummy I need to be gone? Sad

FiRaffe · 19/03/2015 22:34

How was her cough after the bath daholster? Steam does tend to soothe my coughs when I get them (asthmatic since diagnosis at 2, I have about a third of the lung capacity I should have but well controlled). If she was better, could be worth seeing if you could get her to breathe some steam to ease things if she wakes in the night. Hope you get some sleep anyway and it is tough not to worry, it's only natural

SuzyBean · 19/03/2015 22:41

daholster it must be so worrying for you, it's so hard when your little one is so tiny and anything to do with breathing is so emotive and worrying.
I've had asthma since I was tiny and have never grown out of it, I get through a couple of steroid and ventolin inhalers every couple of months. However it has never stopped me doing anything, I've run lots of 10k races and even the london marathon and this week I even got signed off for the mlu much to my surprise! If your DS does have asthma it can be managed so that it is controlled. X

daholster · 19/03/2015 22:54

Fi frustratingly I can't remember!!! She was coughing before the bath and after cos I remember thinking the poor thing looked tired of it and it would be a hard night. She was perhaps better in the bath, it might be worth a try if we are struggling and she actually can't sleep.

I've got a second inhaler I have dug out, ipratropium - will try this if she wakes. I know I should just go to bed but I'm terrified. I checked her chest, she's breathing a bit fast but not working hard with her chest muscles or anything so I know it probably all sounds worse than it really is. Just think I'd rather be awake instead of not sleeping properly in bed. Might find a colouring book.

ChickenMe · 19/03/2015 23:19

Thanks River I got some nipple shields and finally got DD on the boob tonight and now cannot get her off.

TheBooMonster · 19/03/2015 23:22

penguin 7.5% is fab! DD lost 12%

RiverRocks · 19/03/2015 23:27

Sorry to hear about DD daholster. I've got no advice, I'm afraid as I've never suffered, but DH did and I never even knew until we were packing to move house and I found an inhaler! Fingers crossed it's just a chest infection, though Flowers
I've seen ventilators in the chemist, would something like that help?

TheBooMonster · 19/03/2015 23:30

daholster DD I don't think quite has asthma, but she has an inhaler because every time she gets a cold she gets a lingering cough and goes into bronchospasm all bloody night and the inhaler tends to help, it's scary listening to her sometimes though as sometimes she coughs so much I have no idea how she manages to breath! I'm sure your DD will be fine, but it is pretty scary, especially as your DH isn't with you tonight, I always feel happier knowing that there are two of us in the house who would hear if DD had a problem!

You're welcome Chicken, I know a lot of the sites/peer supporters are not keen, but I couldn't believe the difference. I plan to use them for a few more days and then try to wean him off them, but we were getting precisely nowhere without them so if it's the only way, I'll take it!
Penguin, 7.5% is really good. Hope that's reassuring you about feeding?

daholster · 20/03/2015 01:11

Sounds similar sort of scary boo. Going to get the new tablets in the morning. Might call Dr if she wakes and can't settle. In meantime going up to bed with monitor, colouring book, laptop and DVD I think... Hopefully I'll fall asleep at some point for a bit.

On a lighter note, ds (bump) just had a proper jump in response to my tummy gurgling! Lol!

daholster · 20/03/2015 06:11

Well, I think I fell asleep about 01.30 and woke up about 6 times, just got up because she was asking for me and tucked her back in with a requested stroke... Hoping she will sleep longer than usual, she is knackered.

TheBooMonster · 20/03/2015 06:44

Hope you and DD can get some more sleep daholster!

DH is snoring away, guess he needs his beauty sleep in preparation for that exhausting labour he's going to witness this weekend! If the got seeps through the solar eclipse I'm not bloody waking him up, he can miss it!

Blimey, congratulations to those with cute bundles of awesomeness!

So, I've realised I'm a bit behind on the shopping front still - can anyone recommend me their cot bed mattress? I'm going slightly insane with all the choice, pocket sprung, open sprung, washable removable bits, waterproof layers and waterproof coverings - I just don't really know what to get. All I know is that out cotbed is 140 x 70 and the mattress is supposed to be 10cm deep, and that I probably don't want just a foam one. I've looked at Mothercare/M&P/John Lewis and I'm still v confused!! Help!!

TheBooMonster · 20/03/2015 07:01

I have no idea exactly what ours is, but it has washable waterproof covers and is interior spring, it's a good 6-7 inches thick and came from mama's and papa's.

OP posts:
RiverRocks · 20/03/2015 07:26

We haven't got ours yet Minstrelle, so I can't help, but we did face a similar dilemma with the crib mattress. We ended up going with foam as that's what it came with originally.

In terms of comfort, I've never owned one at home but I studied in Germany for a year and my mattress there was foam, and I always remember thinking how comfortable it was - to the point where I actually noticed it was foam rather than sprung like most ones here. If you go into John Lewis /Mothercare their advisors are usually more than helpful?

Hope you and DD managed a bit more sleep daholster; I'm sure it's worrying enough her being ill, without being overtired as well Flowers

BrixtonBunny · 20/03/2015 07:33

Good morning - from the new house! Yesterday was exhausting but we're in. The movers we hired were amazing, and then we managed to unpack the bedroom and sitting room so we at least have two functional rooms. Will try and tackle kitchen today so we can cook.

Boo, that's so exciting - I'm really pleased you got the outcome you wanted. High five for assertiveness.

Is anyone else suffering from carpal tunnel? I didn't think I was but I've realised that's definitely what it is, the last few nights it's been so bad that it's been waking me up. My hands are so painful and swollen and tingly. My right hand is particularly bad - I can barely close my fingers into a fist.

Any advice/ experience?

37+2 (typing that is very scary - I feel like the only person on the thread to want baby to stay in as long as possible! Too much to do!)

BrixtonBunny · 20/03/2015 07:36

Daholster that sounds like a rough night. Can you try and both take it easy today? Lots of snacking and napping?

Morning everyone Brew

Really can't get comfortable now. At night on the sofa I feel like I just want to get up and walk around, and in the mornings in bed I struggle to have a lie in because I can't get a comfortable position and start to get restless legs Sad I just can't justify getting out of bed yet though when I have nothing to do!
I don't have a plan for today, not sure how I feel about it! I need to clean my car out at some point but that's about it. I don't want to keep spending money so I can't even justify going to the shops! Hmm. On Fridays I feel like a hang around in limbo, never sure whether my other half is going to go for a drink after work, and feel silly asking him this early on because I suppose he doesn't know himself. So I never know whether to cook dinner, or whether were going to get a takeaway, or whether I'll just be cooking for myself... I'm not a massive fan of Fridays as you can tell Hmm

Annia yes I suppose so! If the midwives aren't worrying then I shouldn't either. I have the same routine as you, it seems!

Daholster RE asthma and eczema - when we were younger, my brother had the asthma and I had the eczema. We were a right pair! He also had bad croup a lot - you know the coughing thing? I remember it sounding terrible Confused as he got older though he did grow out of if all, which obviously I understand may or may not happen. I agree with the preservatives thing on the eczema front (could be asthma too but no personal experience). Unfortunately as I've got older I've kept the eczema, which has developed into dermatitis, although only on my hands/wrists which really can only be controlled and doesn't actually go away! Even with the help of steroid creams and topical moisturiser, which I go through tubs and tubes of. But along the way I have learnt that I'm 'allergic' to things such as dust and 'tree pollen' (wth?!). Obviously these things are hard to avoid so it's just a case of getting on with it, but diet and nutrition definitely plays a part too. Such as when I've had bouts of drinking mainly just water and cutting out other drinks, my skin tends to clear up a lot. It's just hard to keep up with Confused Hope your little one feels better soon. You're definitely not a bad mummy, look how worried you are! Brew

FiRaffe you got some lovely things there! I like the use of the printing kit Smile

Brixton congrats on the house! No carpal tunnel here but I can sympathise as my mum had suffered with this in the past few years, and had to have the operation. It still didn't fully work though and she often gets pain with it still, especially in the cold. She has to wrap her hands up when driving with gloves, and tries not to keep her hands in one position for a length of time, and clenches and unclenches her hands a lot.

RL20 · 20/03/2015 08:06

FiRaffe that was meant to be 'I like the idea' not use! Autocorrect Angry

RiverRocks · 20/03/2015 08:07

Congratulations on your move Brixton, you must be so relieved.

I suffered from carpal tunnel quite badly, including being woken up by the pain (still suffering from the tingling/lack of sensation, though much better, and DS is 1 wk old today). I was given wrist splints by the physio which really helped keep the symptoms under control. I was told as it's pregnancy related there was nothing else they could/would do.

You can buy the splints from Boots etc, but if you can get to see your GP they may be able to give you some on the NHS.

Flowers as I know how rubbish it is. And just as an aside, my friend had it quite badly with her first pregnancy but didn't suffer in her second.

FiRaffe · 20/03/2015 08:08

Hope your DD is feeling better when she gets up daholster.

Great news on the house Brixton and the unpacking! I've not been diagnosed with carpal tunnel but tendonitus instead - the midwife thinks otherwise. Can't really do much with my right thumb (including scrolling on my phone which is fun) and my left hand is so swollen I had to take my wedding rings off yesterday - let me know if you find a solution and hope your hands feel better.

Thanks ladies! River that wrist support looks VERY sexy Wink I'll definitely get a pair though - I'm desperate to try anything! If I go to GP I can only imagine the faff to get referred to physio so will just buy some, then at least I can get them quickly. It's bloody painful! It seems to be very common, apparently my mum suffered when she was in late stages of pregnancy too.
