My DP is sad that he never gets to hear the baby's heartbeat, as they do that at the midwife checkups at the doctor's surgery, and he only comes to the scans. Do you think they can let us listen at the next scan? (I have one on friday because of low placenta.) I thought about buying a listening thingie but have heard the ones you can get cheapishly don't work very well.

Redlorry75 · 02/10/2006 16:37

Hey everyone - some new names on here since my lasting posting...how are ya?

Well I am now recovering from 5 days of brthday celebrations for DD's 3rd borthday. She ended up with 3 cakes! And I can honestly say - it;s just too many!

I had a cuddle of my new neice yesterday - she's gorgeous and had a strnage calming influence over me, she must have done wonders for my blood pressure.

Talking fo which the GP took it today and it's a nice normal 130/80 (normal for me anyway). However he has signed me off for 2 weeks and suggested I consider starting maternity leave a little earlier than 38 weeks - so we are now looking at 36 weeks!

Anyway how is everyone - hope you're all doing well. X

Calmriver · 02/10/2006 19:15

Hi All, officially hit the 30 weeks too!I have my driving test tomorrow...Really want to do well in it...been so stressed!

Are you all looking at your tummy's in the mirror and thinking...HOW MUCH BIGGER CAN I GET??? My DD is getting really active now and I watch her sliding around, with lumps here and bumps there. I really am going to treasure these next few weeks and enjoy this as who knows if I'll be having any more.

Good Luck for tomorrow CR!

spinamum · 02/10/2006 20:37

had my 28 wk m/w appointment today with my m/w from 2003(current one at meeting) she's very, very straight talking and instead of telling me I was weeks ahead of myself, she laughed and told me I'd give birth in Jan. She also laughed at me for being due on xmas day. I actually miss her!

made another nigella cake for ILs visit yesterday. I can def recommend her "old fashioned choco cake" to ease all preg woes! I took the remaining half into work today to reduce the risk of a heart attack(if I ate it on my own over the next few days) So I'm now in everyone's good books at work too. Result!

Re: Shopping for baby number one.IT's a nightmare. we spent weeks deciding our first buggy. We bought two cars(and sold our two seater ) in ten minutes in same pregnancy! I ended up with stuff I didn't need and stuff I needed(or was handy) that I didn't even know about til I met someone who had one of whatever.Hope that makes some sense.I would advise to buy close to nothing and buy stuff once you know what you need/is actually useful.

spinamum · 02/10/2006 20:38

good luck CR by the way.

weirdbird · 03/10/2006 10:08

Hope you pass CR!

I went through all the baby stuff from last time and got rid of some of it, no more baby bath for us! we used it a few times but it was a big old fashioned one and far too heavy for me on my own, will wash baby in the bath or sink if I can't bend over!

Am off to my first NNS of this Autumn on Sat and quite excited about what bargains I might find...

Though my main objective is stair gates, we put them up while I was still pregnant last time and then DD was so used to them being there she never questioned them.

Been busy decorating the Nursery recently, have been very boring and the walls are all cream.

lubella · 03/10/2006 11:53

Good Luck CR! Sorry so many of you all seem to be down with cold type things I can only recommend honey in boiling water with loads of lemon, if you can get your hands on some Manuka Honey it is a natural antibiotic.

It is so interesting listening to everyone's experiences of buying for first BB - seems to be the general rule that 1st babies get tons of useless / pretty things and all following get much more useful/practical stuff.
I am also going to a NNS this weekend weirdbird so hoping to pick out a few bargains there..hoping it will be less stressful than Peter Jones

accessorizequeen · 03/10/2006 13:08

there was a thread a couple of months back called things you couldn't have survived without which gives a good idea of what's worth buying & what will get thrown away as about 100 people posted (like baby bath, although I'm tempted by a tummy tub this time!). Was hoping to go to NNS sale sat too, I quite salivate over potential bargains...

spinamum · 03/10/2006 14:06

great link,AQ. I agree with everyone on there even when they contradict one another! DH and I were really clueless and bought all the "wrong" things last time. I'm just glad we didn't bother with things like baby baths(cos of small bathroom),swings(cos we had no free doors IYKWIM) and I think I'm the only person on MN who actually liked(sort of) the Nappy wrapper(cos at least it kept nappies in one area rather than in every single bin in the house(waiting for me to find them on bin day!!!!
My personal faves are grobags, baby bjorns, bath support thing from mother care(which can be flipped over in grandparents bath when toddlers to stop them slipping and a cot with a drop side that folded under to turn it into a day bed when he got to 2yrs old but we didn't want to buy a new bed a few weeks before moving house. And of course muslins squares!!!

And very big cheap knickers and ten boxes of maternity pads. Those are the real essentials for purchase pre-baby!

Redlorry75 · 03/10/2006 14:07

Hi Everyone - I am veryjealous as no NNS near me!

Still I have contented myself these past few days by going through baby stuff DH has retrieved from the loft. Sorting out the newborn and 0-3 and washing it all. Have washed the girls stuff - just in case.

I am now fighting with the wing nut on the moses basket so I can get all the covers etc off and wash them. And DH has also dug the travel system out of its protective packaging in the shed and it is up in the garden having a good air. I thought the covers were removable but they seem to be stitched in place. Will have to give it a good sponge down and perhaps find some spray on stuff to make it all fresh again - any ideas?

DD is very happy as her dollys have received lots of new clothes - stuff that's going to be out of season - and the cute but fiddly over the head babygro's that aer just to much effort with a newborn.

GOOD TIP for any first time mum's only get fasten down the front baby gro's no over the head or down the back stuff, it;s just too traumatic trying to get a floppy - often screaming newborn into one.

spinamum · 03/10/2006 14:15

when(if) is anyone starting on raspberry leaf tea? I used it from 35 wks last time and DS turned up 14 days late. A friend of a friend started using it at 28 wks I found out yesterday and was early. I wonder if anyone has any experiences. ('fraid it's outside the realm of my knowledge other than advise people not to take it before 35 wks!!) I know it dosn't bring labour on but if my cervix is "ripe" who knows DS2B might just fall out early/on time. Goodness knows thare's no pelvic floor keeping him up there!

Altogether now SQUEEZE!!!!!!!!

Redlorry75 · 03/10/2006 14:21

Hi Spina - interesting question, I used it from 36 weeks last time and DD was 10 days late - TBH thought I would'nt bother this time. Perhaps go with an olive oil massage of the perenium (spelling)instead.

spinamum · 03/10/2006 14:27

RL, we got the newbie stuff out over the weekend too but my lovely MIL offered and took it back home with her to wash for me.(Bribed with nigella cake) we're playing some sort of puzzle at moment. We have friends visiting this week so we have no room in spare room for stuff so that stuff had to go to garage and garage stuff had to go to ILs and in the process I've noticed major nesting going on! I found some really dinky clothes and DS was a big ish baby.I'm def going to use some newbie bibs this time. All my fav DS1 clothes have horrid yellow stains on them from possetty dribble.(I'm going to keep them for sentimental reasons in a box somewhere)

I've (rather sadly) counted the days I've got left at work and I'm counting them down! 24 to go but over the next ten weeks. nothing like a motivated team player.

spinamum · 03/10/2006 14:35

RL(lots of crossed messages!) I did the perinium massage thing too last time(I've forgotton about that!) Still had a epistomy(sp?) Maybe I should give up on all forms of helping myself along!
I did lots of curries, raspberry tea,peri-massage,nipple stimulation(not for the recommended hour three times a day or whatever it is-I HAD a life once!),lots of sex(poor DH),bumpy car journeys, walking and sitting on my pg ball.

BUT it 's really important this time as I will kill someone on xmas day if I havn't got my Beanie by then. Please Santa Claus, let me
have my bub!!(But can I have him in advance)

Calmriver · 03/10/2006 18:47

Hi All, I love all this chat of bringing it on, but will wait another few weeks!

I didn't get through my test today as I didn't check my blind spot enough when doing my turn in the road...grr! I have now booked it for a couple of weeks time.

More lessons and more money!

We have decided not to do the 'funky-monkey' stuff for now, but in a few weeks despite how yuck I feel doing it, I WILL be DOIN'IT!

Hey, we can all get on here and decide on a night, all be getting it on at the same time...very funny thought!

With our partners I mean!

OP posts:
weirdbird · 03/10/2006 19:34

I did try Raspberry leaf tea last time, but it was so foul I couldn't make myself, for whatever cause!

Ohh and I am another one who loves her Sangenic nappy wrapper and wouldn't do without it, we lived in the upstairs maisonette and I couldnt take bin bags out without someone else in the place as it was a trek out to the communal bin area, so to be able to keep a whole weeks worth in the nappy thing without it stinking the place out and then having DH do them all in one go was a boon and blessing!

Sorry you didn't pass CR, but all the best people pass 2nd time around

Calmriver · 03/10/2006 20:55

Cool, I was wondering about getting one of those nappy things myself last time. May just do that this time!

I can't stop farting and burping. I am such a charming lady I know!

Who here wants to make a proper effort from tomorrow to eat really well and you have to write down every day to show what we all have. What do you think???
I need some help to eat well...anyone,?pleeease???

OP posts:
weirdbird · 03/10/2006 21:56

I would, but I'm not sure I dare!

Is there a limit on the number of Tunnocks Tea cakes one can eat in a day?!?

Am not doing tooo badly those aside, my biggest tip would be to buy some nice fruit, melon, mango, grapes, kiwi etc...

Cut up and prep yourself a tupperware container of this the night before, you buy it in the supermarket for silly money and it doesnt really take that long to do, then when the craving strikes you can choose the healthy, quick option...

Olihan · 03/10/2006 22:03
