bibs are useful for milk feeds and post milk burps. But mussies will do the same job. Most mums end up saying they have no idea what they did before they had muslins. I used mine for everything, lining changing mat, sweat catcher for hot car seats,(prob only relevant to summer babies) a nappy, sick cloths, flannel, all sorts.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 28/11/2011 18:32

I still need more muslins.

Wormshuffler · 28/11/2011 18:37

It was all bibs 12 years ago when I had dd don't remember muslins existing . I used bibs then as I ff and they were needed as milk used to spill out the mouth. Thinking about it the same rules will apply for winding, I couldn't get my head around a bib being any good when baby is laid on it's side at the breast. Will get some, I saw some really cool looking ones like neckerchiefs online.

Fryn · 28/11/2011 19:39

Hi everyone,

I second muslins - the most useful thing I bought! No harm in having bibs though, as they'll be handy later at weaning o'clock (plus waterproofs, natch).

I don't think my boobs changed much from being pregnant to breastfeeding to be honest - it was after I stopped that they became saggy sacks!

cakes good luck with the mental notes - I can't remember what I've left the room for half the time!

nanny sorry about your uncle.

So, had the growth scan and it turns out my "small" baby is in the 75th centile and currently weighing a bit less than 4lbs, so I'm now worried for the opposite reason! Anyway, it was reassuring and very nice to see the little chubster again.

addictediam · 28/11/2011 20:14

So 45 posts to go anyone got any ideas for the new thread name? Something christmassy?

ParsleyLion1 · 28/11/2011 20:28

The one where Santa was too fat to fit down the chimney ?

supadupapupascupa · 28/11/2011 20:33

ooh yes get plenty of muslins!!! we used them for burping, nappy changing, mopping up spillages, we still use them as bibs for our 2 year old, they cover up your boobs when feeding, wrap them around juice bottles to catch any leaks......endless!

I had my growth scan today at 32+3 (or fat-bird scan as i like to call it Smile). It was amazing the amount of detail we could see. Her face was so clear! She sucked her thumb and kicked me which was weird to see and feel at the same time Smile All measurements were spot on, so that was brilliant!
Trouble is she's breach!!!!! and they want to do another bloody scan on 9th Jan grrrrrrr. Surely her current position means nothing really?? She should move over and over between now and delivery!!

shattered now and in bed (have been for a while now). could really do with a lay-in

redheadbedhead · 28/11/2011 20:43

glad both your scans were good girls! fryn my baby is apparently 95% centile so don't worry!!

i have 3 packs of muslins ready to go.... Grin my OH keeps calling them muslims....not entirely sure he knows he's mistaken!!

the next thread could be something about who's going to pop first..... it might happen soon!!!

am very pissed off tonight because my home birth plans are going totally awry....i tried to transfer to a different hospital, and they set up a meeting with me today, so i was quite hopeful thinking they wouldn't drag a 7mnth preggers woman into hospital just to say NO - erm.... but they did say NO.

pointless waste of time. pointless. and basically now home birth is going to be totally luck based, and since there are hardly any midwives at my hospital, I don't think the chances are very high at all. I'm really annoyed that it's such a postcode lottery. I'm going to have to start getting my head around going into a MLU or delivery suite, which I really am finding very hard right now, because it just ISN'T WHAT I WANT. Sad

sorry for rant. i know it doesn't matter really as long as it's healthy. but I am really really disappointed Sad

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 28/11/2011 20:48

January 2012 - Once we pop we just won't stop...?

January 2012 - The countdown begins - and we're not talking advent calendars...?

How come you switched hospitals red? I totally understand your disappointment - it's a valid feeling, so don't apologise for it. I am assuming finances do not run to an independent MW...? Apparently you can negotiate their price down a little if you try...

redheadbedhead · 28/11/2011 21:03

i haven't switched, that's the point, they won't let me Angry What's crazy is I'm allowed to switch to use their hospital or MLU or birth centre, but I'm not allowed to switch to use their home-birth team. they just refused.

I wanted to switch because there is no home-birth team now at my hospital, and lots of midwives have left, so they're massively under-staffed, and basically most people requesting home birth seem to be being collected up in the ambulance and being taken in to birth. It's shitty. i can't afford an independent midwife, although I'm sure my parents would help out if i was desperate, but I've also paid for a doula already, so that would negate that a bit, and also what if there was something wrong and I ended up going to hospital anyway? I'd have wasted a couple of grand. Wouldn't even be paying for that many antenatal appointments now since it's getting so close. I can't believe that budget cuts mean I can't birth at home, it seems totally nonsensical. it's bloody cheaper than a hospital birth!!!! god damn!!!!!

Oeisha · 28/11/2011 21:24

nanny So sorry about your Uncle

red sounds like you might be better off switching anyway. So many people have told me I've made the 'sensible' choice with my hospital as quite a few of the others have mw shortages or are scaling back the services they offer...pretty friggin scary considering the birthrate is rising.

Congrats on the good scans. Abi was in 65 centile at last measuring...a bit paranoid miself about size. Still can't seem to BUY baby grows just incase she's really tall/fat...or not...eeek! Mainly been going for 0-3s but the fresh babies I saw in hospital were term, but seemed teeny-weeny...

Now I'm panicking that 18 muslins isn't enough...ARGH!!!!

As were getting through the threads rapidly...

Jan 2012 - panic shopping and calm popping!

GiraffeAHolic · 28/11/2011 21:29

That's crap redhead my homebirth is on dodgy ground too it's gutting when you've set your heart on something.

January 2012 - will anyone deliver before Santa?

GiraffeAHolic · 28/11/2011 21:30

18 muslins??? I haven't bought 1 yet!

redheadbedhead · 28/11/2011 21:46

thanks guys.. nanny I'm sorry I missed the post about your uncle, too busy ranting in my own little world. Sorry Sad

giraffe why is yours on dodgy ground? similar reasons? and i like your thread title, that gets my vote.

Jan 2012 - shop, pop, drop ? Grin

I've got 15 muslins!

GiraffeAHolic · 28/11/2011 21:53

No, it's just come to light that I may have a genetic mitochondrial disease (50% chance) and the genetics doctor contacted my MW so I now have to see the consultant obstetrician on Friday. Chances are it'll now be consultant care and hospital birth with monitoring :(

ParsleyLion1 · 28/11/2011 21:59

I've got 12 Muslins - (which comes up
Muslims on auto spell) But another 6 ordered. I also bought 50 top and tail muslin squares - but they are tiny and i think they were a mistake.

shonnomanom · 28/11/2011 22:34

Sorry to hear that the homebirth plans are going tits up ladies. It's shocking that an option that is cheaper to the nhs is being refused!

I like giraffes thread name suggestion.

Started to watch that Baby Hospital programme tonight. It was only on 10mins and I was in tears.

Maybe the new thread name should say something about the amount of us having big babies. my baby panda keeps trying to headbutt my ribs and stretch its way out my tummy

fishandlilacs · 29/11/2011 08:27

Morning all,

Loving January 2012 - will anyone deliver before Santa? That has to be it!

I have about 8 muslins, but going to buy another couple of packs. I love those bright ones. Tip for you who like to get together at baby groups. Mark your mussies with a sharpie or a coloured stitch or even a knot in one corner. They get easily mixed up!

I'm sorry to hear of birth plans going awry, I remember how dissapointing that was when dd went overdue so i ended up going in anyway. It's hard to have faith that they genuinely want whats best for you, not whats best for the NHS. The fact that my actual birth expereince was so utterly removed from anything I wanted or had planned was a major factor in my PND. But I am at peace with what happened now and in the end, i'm very glad I was in hospital.

I'm constipated again :( despite taking fybogel everyday since my last episode, I am struggling. Seeing midwife later at the surgery so may see if I can get lactulose while i'm there. Trouble is it makes me feel so sick, I hate that stuff. Oh and I have thrush :(...............

My last scan is on friday, DH has booked the day off to come with. It's also my last afternoon at work on fri too. It's my last tuesday today, tmrw and thursday off. DD home from school tomorrow due to strike, I am so looking forward to spending the bonus day with my best mate, her son and my daughter. I simply cannot wait.

greenlady78 · 29/11/2011 08:40

fish oh no! the body works in mysterious ways...I bet you haven't changed anything on your diet either...sometimes it is one of those things! Enjoy the day with your best mate + kiddies Smile

I need to buy of those SAD lamps, I realised that this lack of light is starting to affect me again...the thought of another 4 months like this scares me! I can do winter up to Christmas (something to look forward to, right?) then after that it is downhill for me...although this year I have something else to look forward to after Christmas Smile

Waiting for my new sofa to be delivered and super stressed as I bought it online and just hope it is not a heap of s!

Hugs everyone!

Wormshuffler · 29/11/2011 08:46

Great thread name suggestion giraffe

The only things (i think) I have left to buy are cotbed sheets and I am currently watching some on ebay. I can't believe the price of them Shock I looked in Primani for some yesterday but couldn't find them. I did however get a couple of fleecy front opening nighties for £6 each though, and the obligatory huge knickers for post CS.

For the home birth ladies, I'm sorry you won't be getting your wish, my DsinL has just had her first and laboured at home for most of it before going in to the mw led unit. She was only there for 40 mins before giving birth, and was home 6 hours later. I know it isn't what you wanted but not so awful as long as a healthy baby is the end result :)
Is a home birth really cheaper? I can't get my head around that, midwives are usually monitoring at least 2 ladies at once in hospital so having a one to one at home would surely be more expensive?

I am feeling a little traumatised today, I had my first full nights sleep but then it was spoilt by the realisation when I woke that I had a dream where my DS, my lovely cute naive fun happy 10 year old was a few years older and having sex!! in the next room to us at centre parks!! Shock

GiraffeAHolic · 29/11/2011 09:19

Morning all.

Well I'm falling behind in the competitive muslin buying Grin Going shopping with dh on Saturday to finish all the baby shopping and christmas shopping in one day (I must be mad!)

I picked up some light cotton button front pjs in Sainsburys sale for £8 so hopefully they'll be ok and dh dug out my wheely case last night so I can start packing a bag (although dh is now away until Thursday so taking it easy as a preventative measure!)

Tesco normally have reasonably priced cotsheets, or Matalan.

Worm that is one freaky dream Shock

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 29/11/2011 10:02

Dunelm Mill have very good prices on nursery bedding.

ParsleyLion1 · 29/11/2011 10:27

So just been for 31wk MW appt. baby has turned head down and bum to the left side so hope she stays there. I thought I felt her turn but thought it was my imagination. Maybe it wasn't.

On the downside my bump is measuring just under 29cms now. In fact a tiny bit smaller than my last appt. MW thinks it may just be because baby's head has also moved quite low but now I have to go back to be measured again next week and growth scan the week after if no change. Sad

She said not to worry as all else seemed well but I can't help it a little bit.

addictediam · 29/11/2011 10:52

Morning all, just back from 30wk mw appointment, she's given me an urgent referal to a physio and she thinks I'm going to need crutches :( still at least she thinks i should get a phonecall this afternoon or tomorrow morning to arrange something.

Hope everyone else is having a good day :)

ghosteditor · 29/11/2011 11:35

eeek, ladies, everyone is having bad times, so sorry to hear that! Let's get chanting mantras about happy healthy babies - that's what's important at the end of it, right? Really sorry to hear about plans going awry, but here's hoping that we all have sufficient warning so that we can mentally adjust to whatever needs to happen. I really want my MW-led waterbirth but I have a nagging feeling that if my blood pressure stays high they will insist that I go into the hospital instead.

parsley my baby has also gone head down, which makes me one happy and relieved MNer! The baby was ceph right occipito-anterior last week (which means head down, back on the right, baby's back in my belly) - left is the preferred orientation apparently but there's still loads of time to move, and judging by the crazy stretching feelings I'm having baby is doing just that! Fascinatingly, apparently all babies turn the same way as they're descending into an engaged position, so if they start on the left they're likely to stay anterior, but if they start on the right they might spin into a posterior (i.e. back to back) position. Loving the info I'm getting from my yoga classes! For anyone who has a baby in a less desirable position, apparently it can help to do lots of walking, sitting on a fit ball, being disciplined about posture (arch your back ever so slightly forward so that your belly is like a hammock for the baby to drift into), and spending time on all fours, especially with your head lower than your hips.

also, my bump was measuring +2 (or +3) at 28 weeks but now at almost 34 weeks I'm measuring -2, (32 weeks). I'm sure it's just how the MW measures on the day! They're not doing any extra checks for me.

greenlady I was just thinking about that! Actually I went to the loo four times last night so I think the baby is defs pressing on my bladder more due to being head down - the baby wasn't engaged at all though so I'm guessing that's why walking doesn't really feel any different for me.

We need to do a bit more decorating and buy a changing table, and then we're almost there for the little one! I am confused by my hospital bag list which says I need a 'going home outfit' for the baby - surely pamplemousse will just be in a babygro/sleepsuit type thing and the big warm snuggly outdoor suit that we've bought? Do we need a whole outfit?

And I won an almost brand new changing bag on ebay last night for £20, when they're £65 new - hope it's as nice in person as it looks online....

addicted hope you get everything you need from the physio [hugs]

I too am a fan of January 2012 - will anyone deliver before Santa?
