lets cut to the chase and see what you do not like...

OP posts:

MamaLazarou · 11/05/2010 16:32

Evie. It just looks too much like Evil to me.

LetThereBeRock · 11/05/2010 16:33

I like Holly.

LetThereBeRock · 11/05/2010 16:34

I'm not sure that it passes the prime minister/judge etc test but I like it,much more than Ruby.

MamaLazarou · 11/05/2010 16:35

Oh, and anything with -Mae or -Rae tacked on the end.

Also, double-barrelled names that just don't go. Like Hannah-Kayleigh, or Ellie-Grace.

And most of all... white kids called Ebony!

hopingforanother · 11/05/2010 16:36

Ophelia.

I just think it's a bit of an odd name to choose for a child given the famous character in Hamlet...

thisismyclone · 11/05/2010 16:41

Ha my sister's name is mentioned 4 times on here..

am I allowed to be a little bit smug?

zozzle · 11/05/2010 16:59

ooh where to start!

I have an irrational dislike of Chloe, Lucy and Emily (the latter two are far too girly for me and although are classic are a bit yawn! sorry). I'm also not keen on the names often given by middle class yummy mummy types (Olivia, Isabelle, Amelia etc) sorry!

Don't like names ending in "een" or "ette".

Not keen on prim/pretentious names e.g. Prudence, Constance, Mabel that remind me of a victorian with buttons done up to her chin.

Don't like most of the 70s names I grew up with especially Michelle, Tracy, Sharon, Joanne (love Joanna though), Donna, Suzanne (again, love Suzannah), Elaine etc. Other names associated with this period I absolutely love though e.g. Joni and Zoe (although Zoe is an ancient Greek name - has actually been around for thousands of years and is a saint's name - so absolutely classic IMO).

Don't like current faddy names - Evie, Lily, Lola etc.

Don't like some names that make you wonder if the child has a foreign connection when they don't e.g. Amelie, Sylvie etc. There are some exceptions to this though.

So as you can see I'm a fussy bugger!! And am sure most of the people with these names are absolutely lovely.

pedrothellama · 11/05/2010 17:00

Oh God Yes - the white girls called Ebony.

Any hyphenated name - Kady-Leigh, Billy-Jo etc

TheBolter · 11/05/2010 17:11

Any name that is loaded with aspiration. Or any name that tries too hard to be different. And any name that sounds too girly; I like strong names that can be bellowed loudly when attention needs to be given.

RedZora · 11/05/2010 17:32

Can we have some examples of "loaded with aspiration" names

pedrothellama · 11/05/2010 17:56

Tallulah springs to mind and Princess

Raahh · 11/05/2010 18:19

DD's name (well the short form) has cropped up a few times but I love it any way- she is Millicent (Millie) so ticks the twee/old lady chic boxes in one.

I have a totally irrational dislike of the name sophie- can't really say why, the 'fee' sound is just too soft...(and i think it was watching Mamma Mia that sealed its fate for me).
And Caitlyn in all its spellings- it sounds like 2 names cobbled together, and is quite clumsy to my ears. But i know several of each, and like them as people

And as mentioned on the other thread- i hate my name -Joanne. The 70's was a grim time for names, imo

And my mum is Doreen, and MIL is Maureen- terrible names both!

highlystrung · 11/05/2010 19:05

Erin - hideous name.

TheMarquisofCranberry · 11/05/2010 19:59

Jade
Kayleigh
Hayley
Ruth (disclaimer: I know two lovely Ruths)
Annabel
Jenny
Fiona (there was a horrible Fiona at my school)

Partyofseven · 11/05/2010 23:28

highlystrung, my 15wk old gorgeous baby girl does not have a hideous name, i think hideous is a tad strong, but doing well so far only two out of my 4 girls mentioned sooooo far!

florence2511 · 12/05/2010 01:45

Hideous to highly strung, not hideous to you partyofseven. She's entitled to an opinion.

Partyofseven · 12/05/2010 08:44

Don't get excited florence, I am well aware that everyone is entitled to their opinion as I am mine. I was merely thinking that the thread started of as names you don't like and has progressed to using words like hate, disgusting, vile and yes, hideous.

Its not nice when someone says the name you gave one of your children is hideous, but I wouldn't say someone is not entitled to their opinion, I simply said the used of the word was a tad strong.

brogan2 · 12/05/2010 10:46

Hideous is a tad strong. However, Erin is a name that strangely people think is Irish yet the Irish laugh about. In Ireland people think of it as an American faux Irish name.
I don't actually mind it but wouldn't chose to use a name that anyone sniggered about.

zozzle · 12/05/2010 10:56

ooh can I add to my previous list:

Irrational dislike of Amy, Matilda (& Tilly) and Milly.

Immense dislike of most hypenated names, and then there's all the American names: Paige, Destiny etc.

Plus all those names where people haven't considered the meaning of the name they have given their child (meanings of names are sooo important IMO)e.g. Abigail - named AFTER her father decided he wanted nothing to do with her and Mia (which means bitterness in some languages - love the name just can't get over the meaning) and yes Ebony for white girls!!

pedrothellama · 12/05/2010 11:22

Nicola and Anita I have always disliked, they always sound harsh to my ears - as does Michaela and Aneka.

I also want to add Tina to the harsh 'een sounding names I mentioned, Maureen, Noreen, Charlene etc.

Hedwig3 · 12/05/2010 12:50

Anything with more than 3 syllables!

They always look like lots of names stuck together to me!

Psammead · 12/05/2010 12:59

My name as 4 syllables! That's thrice that it's copped it now :P:P

Hedwig3 · 12/05/2010 18:32

Sorry Psammead.

Actually, after more thought its not ALL multi-syllable names, things like Penelope are lovely. I just dislike the ones that you could make so many other neat names out of.

Maybe I am just like things simple!

Nancy66 · 13/05/2010 12:46
