Just seen my DD's name on here and I'm NOT offended. Why should I be? People are entitled to an opinion. Tilly isn't to everyone's taste.

Magaly · 10/05/2010 14:53

My daughter's name is here and so is my own. I am not surprised. I still think they're good choices (even my mother's choice for me - it didn't turn into a sharon/tracy/dawn name). You can't please everybody.

Is there a name that nobody hates. They may not love it but they don't hate it?? Just wondering.

Magaly · 10/05/2010 14:54

Dotty2, up to a point! I know of a teenager with an Irish name that is pronounced Ayna. Her sur name starts with S. Everytime I meet the girl, and she is a confident, wholesome, pretty & clever teenager, I think, oh good lord that is close to Anus.

ihearthuckabees · 10/05/2010 15:11

I knew someone who had an Aunt Dorcas. Always thought that was a pretty ugly name.

Hate the Milly/Tilly, Molly/Lolly trend, although I think it's inverted snobbery on my part, which is just as bad as being snootish about chavvy names, isn't it.

My name's on here, btw

ihearthuckabees · 10/05/2010 15:12

Oops, sorry florence, didn't see your thread re Tilly.

Loujalou · 10/05/2010 15:17

I dislike Olga its my mum's middle name. Tis truly horrid.

I like Lola but then it was my grandma's (nick)name her real name Theodora wasn't very nice. In fact most of the female Greek names are horrid - Safo, Dasoulla, Maroulla etc etc. Luckily my parents learnt from my grandparents mistakes.

My name is often suggested as a name on the baby name threads.

Partyofseven · 10/05/2010 15:21

Kreecher - My name, my sister, my friend and her daughter are all on your list lol.

I agree about Dawn - sorry - but interesting that the French version of the name, Aurore, is very pretty but impossible to pronounce in English.

I know a very pretty Mary and a Donna (grown ups) and that makes the names pretty for me. Donna means 'woman' in Italian and versions of Mary are surely the most enduring names in Europe if not most of the Latin world - Maria, Marie et al.

So, there aren't really many names I find unspeakable, though I have a dislike for the American imports, Madison, Tigan (sp?), etc. But that is how many names start off - Tracy being an example.

I know four couples with daughters named Ruby and there are also a lot of Milly, Tilly type names which is going to make those names date very quickly unfortunately. I love Tilda for short, I wish more unlikely nicknames could emerge - lots of people decide on a nickname in advance now, don't think that happened in the past.

Bit rambling sorry...

fizzpops · 10/05/2010 16:04

There are some people's lists here on which I love all the names - my own name and DD's have also been mentioned too.

I actually find it quite reassuring in a funny way that so many nice names are on this thread. It really is just a matter of opinion and sort of means that I am equally capable of producing a 'hate' list which may turn out to be someone else's 'love' list.

My own name has been mentioned a couple of times

the one which means lady in italian. I have always been ok with it for me but if I really think about it I think it's quite a harsh name. I've only met a couple of other people with my name and for some reason it sounded different when applied to other people!

Jamie-Leigh. If you're going to have adaughter, why give her not one, but TWO male sounding names?

Also dislike old ladies names.

AbFabT · 10/05/2010 16:37

My name is on here FOUR times! I've always loved it, and really don't care! I got a lot of comments growing up about what a lovely name it is! It is more frequently-used now, though I have seen them on previous un-liked lists.
The names we have lined up for our children (currently expecting first) are not on here though.

I can't stand old-lady names. I hear on here this term 'granny chic'. Er, no, they are not chic, they are just granny. You know the ones I mean (same goes for the male versions).

@ Mooncup/Jacqui/Jacqueline, I love your name, and would spell the nn the way you have too. It's like my own name (Abigail) - shortened to Abi - why would I change the spelling to Abby, when the spare b and the y aren't even in my name full name?

AbFabT · 10/05/2010 16:39

Not sure what happened there, but that first para should read:

Brogan2, no I didn't, but apparently people are sick of it!

LetThereBeRock · 10/05/2010 16:42

Mine has finally been mentioned. I was beginning to feel left out.

I can't understand why anyone would be offended if their name is on someone's list.
It's quite different from disliking the person who has that particular name.

My name has been mentioned quite a few times. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's all down to personal taste.
