I have a totally irrational dislike of Jessica and Abigail, no idea why!

Doodleydoo · 10/05/2010 11:48

couldn't tell you why but Claire and I have 2 good mates called Claire!

Also Pippa, but then one I knew was really wet and the other one was a complete bully so....... Sorry!

If it makes any difference everyone slates my dd's name on threads and have seen a version of her second name so I guess she is buggered!

No offense to anyone with those names, or with kids with those names! There's nothing actually wrong with any of them of course!

My name hasn't been mentioned yet - but my DD's has (kind of - we call her Lucy, she's a Lucia though).

I hope no-one takes too much offense at this thread.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 10/05/2010 12:26

Not going to be specific, but there is a run of names (especially ending ie or y) which are cute for babies/little girls, but a bit twee for adults.

Magaly · 10/05/2010 13:38

Irrational dislike of the name

Harriet - just think it's ugly, but obviously if you don't think it's ugly I can see that it's a normal choice.

Scarlet - a name that starts with scar??

Amy and Kate - boring. There are Amys and Kates my age and older and younger. So maybe it's classic but they need a rest!

Molly - just a bit too silly. Feel the same about Milly but Milly is often Amelia or Matilda in full. Tilly is a bit frilly.

I don't hate them, but Lily, Lila, leila, Lola, Lulu... all very lula skip through the fields Im not growing up!

Anything completely ridiculous such as Kennedeigh-Leigh. Or Maddysen

Magaly · 10/05/2010 13:39

Rasputin, yes Chastity is an AWFUL name to give a child. I wouldn't if Cher's daughter appreciated that name, on top of the confusion she probably felt growing up.

GooseyLoosey · 10/05/2010 13:45

My name is here several times - I guess it is seen as being from a particular era and quite dated. Still, I like it.

I find as I go through life, my tastes in names change. When I was little, my name was cool and the names of my grandmother and her sisters were terrible. They are now very fashionable - Lilly, Eva, Molly, Isabella - so I think I'll refrain from comment as I am sure in 20 years time I'll think the names of my own children will sound dated.

Magaly · 10/05/2010 13:49

I am already thinking that one of my children's names sounds dated. I know it doesn't matter, and it's inevitable as time goes by and your children get older I guess.

jeananddolly · 10/05/2010 13:54

My name is on here - rather surprised as it's a GREAT name. Thank you Suspiria .

That said all the names I dislike are quite 'common' among my generation and mostly related to being the names of horrid girls at school:

Ruth
Donna
Emma
Julie
Michaela is unspeakable (I went to school with several) and Michael is one of my favourite boys names. Sorry any Michaelas.
Anthea
Eileen

jeananddolly · 10/05/2010 13:56

Also don't like Nicola, Joanna or Claire but I know so many lovely people with those names.

florence2511 · 10/05/2010 14:00

There are too many to mention but let's start with the horrific surnameesque names

Taylor
Tyler
Maddison
Bailey
etc

then we can go onto the hillbilly names

Ellie-May
Lilly-May
Mary-Lou
etc

The worst I've heard for a while on Mumsnet is

Bailey-Ray

Then we can go onto the ugly names of the 40's/50's

Barbara
Pamela
Margaret
Maureen
Doreen
etc

Then the ugly names of the beginning of the last century
Phyllis
Edna
etc

Sorry if I have offended anyone.

twosofar · 10/05/2010 14:00

Oooh my list is endless!!

Anything with a hyphen eg
Ellie-Mae
Lily-Rose
Ella-Rae

but worst of these offenders is.... Demi-Leigh.... it makes me want to rip my ears off and burn them

I also hate 70's names like Donna, Sharon, Karen, Stacey, Michelle

I hate names which are deliberately mis-spelt to be "original" - Mykyla particularly offends me

I have an irrational dislike of Nathan and Nathaniel

I can think of loads more but I'd be here all day...

brogan2 · 10/05/2010 14:02

Magaly, did you chose a particularly trendy name for your DC? (Just asking out of curiosity)

A big part as to why I chose Catherine & Elizabeth for my DDs was the hope that even if they lacked popularity they wouldn't date like all the 15yr old Kylies I taught!

mopsyflopsy · 10/05/2010 14:03

Like fashion, names become popular at certain times and then fall out of favour and tend to feel 'dated'.

The best way to avoid this is by choosing names outside the top 100, but of course there is no way of ensuring that they don't suddenly rise in popularity .

Rockbird · 10/05/2010 14:05

DD's name has been mentioned along with an explanation why it's not nice. Am trying very hard not to take offence but it's not easy.

Swangirl · 10/05/2010 14:07

My name Dawn I hate it
My middle name Mary is even worse. When I was a child I wanted to be called Georgina (George)instead

AndieWalsh · 10/05/2010 14:11

I'm not a fan of names with random apostrophes inserted e.g. La'Toya, D'Shelle

BridesheadRegardless · 10/05/2010 14:12

I really dislike Stella-it seems butch to me.

As does Martha.

I don't like Tilly/Milly.

or Sadie

or Kiera

or Courtney (really hate this).

My name is one here. it's a fairly common 70's name. S'alright.

Cobwebsontheceiling · 10/05/2010 14:13

Kreecher has picked both my dd's names ....
