What's the most ridiculous name you've ever heard of/ seen used?

Obviously it's my own fault for choosing the 'one million and 3 baby names' book instead of a more sensible '1000 baby names that are good and you might actually use' book, but COME ON! Some of the names in here are just so ridiculous it's crazy....

Frigg
Schmoopie
Candida
Hitler
Abacus
Flirt
Butter

I can't honestly believe someone would go through this book and think 'hmmm, Sarah, Samantha, Scarlett... Schmoopie. Yes, Schmoopie, the perfect name for our dear daughter.'

And I once looked after a little baby Chlamydia poor foreign parents didn't speak english very well and wanted a name that sounded pretty when you said it

FAQ · 31/10/2008 22:50

thanks Hatrick - tbh I can't remember who jumped to my defence and who didn't - I wasn't in a mental state to - I just remember reading and thinking I wanted to strangle the person who wrote it

unclefluffy · 31/10/2008 22:53

I met a guy called Stan, with brothers named Prince and Harvey. Their full names were Stanford, Princeton and Harvard. Better than Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial, I guess!

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 31/10/2008 22:56

DH has an uncle Jolyon, known as Joly (pronounced Jolly). His wife is called Joy

RottenOtter · 31/10/2008 22:56

FAQ · 31/10/2008 23:00

it's a famous Aztec sculpture/statue isn't it?

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 31/10/2008 23:02

FAQ I have to ask...

The first names I get, they all go together nicely. The Myles and Scott, great...where does Yehudi fit in? I'm not criticising the name at all just asking why as it seems out on its own. But then what the hell do I know!

Lovely names btw and cobblers to anyone who thinks otherwise!

fishie · 31/10/2008 23:03

yes faq, didn't you get the memo? NO FOREIGN NAMES or you will be pilloried by -racists- people who haven't come across them before

RottenOtter · 31/10/2008 23:04

'when he sends his CV to people they will think he is black' this was said to me on announcing DC5's names

AND???? arrrggghhhh

controlfreeeeeakyshrieeeeeky · 31/10/2008 23:07

frazzled, i know a fabian hercules ... do in know you?

FAQ · 31/10/2008 23:09

ahh yes the Yehudi bit - bit odd I must confess.

We had chosen Liam for a middle name, then in a moment of panic I realised that Liam is a form of William (which is incredibly common on my side of the family, it's my DB' and dad's middle name, and just about every male on my dad's side going back YEARS has it as either a first or middle name) - so it was ruled out as we'd decided no "family" ties with the names.

As I was "in charge" of choosing the British part of the name exH sent me off to find some names.

I wrote 3 down (with their meanings as that was important to us) but on the back of the piece of paper I had jotted down Yehudi. Yehudi Menhuin was the patron of the school I attended and I'd often wondered what it meant (as I liked the sound of it) so had found out that day and scribbled on the back of the paper with the list of 3 names.

exH came home from work and I gave him the piece of paper, as he was chatting to be he absent mindedly turned it over - glanced at the paper and said "ooo that's nice - is that the name you want".........and so it was agreed -

So poor DS1 has no "British" connection in his name (apart from the dubious "Welsh" connection with my first name being a Welsh name, and his shortened name being a popular welsh shortened name) none of my family are remotely Welsh at all - and his first name was chosen while still in Zimbabwe so we didn't "click" with the Taf possibly being miscontrued as being Welsh once we got to the UK

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 31/10/2008 23:17

FAQ it's so nice to have a story behind names, and Yehudi is a great name. Just having a nose at your profile pics. They're gorgeous and look like real little rascals. Aw, I want a boy now...

wessexghoul · 31/10/2008 23:18

I know a young Shakira in Dorset, and I've never thought it odd. It's pretty, I think.

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 31/10/2008 23:19

RottenOtter

I can think of worse things for people to think when they read his CV. Mind you, I get that they will think ds is a girl....

FAQ, I love all your kids names! Mine are (mentioned before on MN) Aphra and Skyler.

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 31/10/2008 23:20

Aaaaagh, Ghosty you scared me

(you was robbed btw)

wessexghoul · 31/10/2008 23:20

Nappyaddict, my cousin has a baby daughter called Beau. It strikes me as odd, because it's a very masculine word. Not that I've said that to my cousin's dw .
