Obviously it's my own fault for choosing the 'one million and 3 baby names' book instead of a more sensible '1000 baby names that are good and you might actually use' book, but COME ON! Some of the names in here are just so ridiculous it's crazy....

Frigg
Schmoopie
Candida
Hitler
Abacus
Flirt
Butter

I can't honestly believe someone would go through this book and think 'hmmm, Sarah, Samantha, Scarlett... Schmoopie. Yes, Schmoopie, the perfect name for our dear daughter.'

And I once looked after a little baby Chlamydia poor foreign parents didn't speak english very well and wanted a name that sounded pretty when you said it

Dh was on a confrence call the other day with a woman called Fanny Pong!! Apparently the whole group went quiet as people muted thier phones while they snorted with laughter. Poor girl.

Bubbaluv · 31/10/2008 23:38

Didn't I hear recently that a radio announcer called her son Isaac Cox? Now that is just moronic!

colander · 31/10/2008 23:38

Seen on a gravestone - Fanny Hole

nappyaddict · 01/11/2008 00:10

Also Nia and Mia pronounced with an ie-ah sound when it should be ee-ah. If you want to pronounce it Mie-ah frigging spell it Mya or Maya.

Looks like my reply disapeared

Lene (pronounced Lu - nay)

very common name in Scandinavian countries in fact that common that I would liken it to Sarah and Jane in the UK (but no it is not pronounced Lu nay more like.. Leh neh)

FAQ - Did you know that "Yehudi" means "Jew"?

BroccoliSpears · 01/11/2008 07:46

From the OP: And I once looked after a little baby Chlamydia poor foreign parents didn't speak english very well and wanted a name that sounded pretty when you said it .

Is it just me or is anyone else's skin crawling from the smug, patronising, racist tone of this? It sounds like a fucking Jim Davidson one-liner.

CoteDAzur · 01/11/2008 07:50

I don't see a "smug, patronising, racist tone" in that sentence at all.

firstontheway · 01/11/2008 08:13

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound racist or offensive

They were lovely parents and knew by the time I looked after her (about 6 months I think?) what her name meant and were planning to change it. I was just a bit the (whoever the person is that does the registering!) allowed her name to be registered as that tbh

no it doesn't it - means praise (the Lord) (well at least that's what I found online and my cousins DH - and his family agree - and they're all Jews!)

I read on a name peg at ds's playschool...

Kacper

Surely it would be pronounced Kakper?

Bonkers.

YesSirICanBoogie · 01/11/2008 10:33

A girl in New Zealand was taken into care after a judge ruled her parents had committed abuse by calling her Tallullah does the hula in Hawaii.

ScottishMummy · 01/11/2008 10:54

in scotland they can refuse to register a name if it is inflammatory/contentious or just daft

Lonnie · 01/11/2008 10:56

Scottish Mummy

it is the same in Denmark if the name can be of hinderance to a child in later life then they can refuse to register it (so you couldn't get away with Ella Stich for example)

I have to say I think i t is a good law if people feel that the registrar is being unresonable they can appeal it (some come through others don't)

ScottishMummy · 01/11/2008 10:59

would be interesting to know how often it is invoked and form what names

kyrasmummy · 01/11/2008 11:11

I know a Jellybean CoCo

nappyaddict · 01/11/2008 12:13

And Boe. It's spelt Bo! No need to add random letters is there!

Liffey · 01/11/2008 12:45

Fishie that was a bloody stupid thing to say; anybody who prefers to use English names, or thinks a foreign name might be problematic is a racist

stupidest name I ever came across in rl

"boogie"

ON the birth cert.

jeanjeannie · 01/11/2008 12:59

I know of a girl called Cushion
A boy called Finnbarr-Foobarr

Went to school in the early 70s with a Pandora Archangel...

nappyaddict · 01/11/2008 13:04

Lonnie - that's why i put the pronunciation. Lene to my knowledge is pronounced Luh - nuh not Luh-nay.
