Obviously it's my own fault for choosing the 'one million and 3 baby names' book instead of a more sensible '1000 baby names that are good and you might actually use' book, but COME ON! Some of the names in here are just so ridiculous it's crazy....

Frigg
Schmoopie
Candida
Hitler
Abacus
Flirt
Butter

I can't honestly believe someone would go through this book and think 'hmmm, Sarah, Samantha, Scarlett... Schmoopie. Yes, Schmoopie, the perfect name for our dear daughter.'

And I once looked after a little baby Chlamydia poor foreign parents didn't speak english very well and wanted a name that sounded pretty when you said it

You sometimes see ridiculous names on the credits on the TV. The other day there was a Daniel Daniels. Why oh why would you call your son Daniel if your surname was Daniels???

My teacher at college was called Donald McDonald. Again, why would you do that??

pinata · 11/11/2008 20:32

i had a meeting with a (very) fat man at work was introduced as "Porker", or so i heard. in fact it was Paul Kerr. perfectly reasonable written down, but sounds like Porker

most ridiculous first name i've heard - Luxury. How awful? why would you?

fizzpops · 12/11/2008 08:08

babymt - not sure if it the same ones but there was a family in a magazine the other day with a son Flash and triplets Blue, Moss and Wolf (two boys and a girl).

Not sure they would be my first choice but put altogether they are kind of weirdly fascinating rather than awful.

LisaLessLumpy · 12/11/2008 08:23

I heard of someone who called their new baby girl CARNON the other day, never heard that that before.

laughgiraffe · 17/12/2008 04:21

I met a woman named Lesbia.

audley · 17/12/2008 12:09

krugerparkrules · 17/12/2008 12:23

Jenbottleofeggnog · 17/12/2008 12:32

frazzledoldbag - do you live in Yorkshire? I knew of someone with a "Pebbles" too.

My SIL taught a girl called Bluebella.

And a friend of mine knows a guy with an "Ace Flame" and a "Boss"

cheezcurl · 17/12/2008 13:52

inSanityClause · 17/12/2008 13:59

I had a great aunt called Doris Womble. She had a brother, Herbert.

Responding to seeing my childrens names in the most ridiculous names you've ever heard of...glad at least you like my kids despite the names! Not sure if you'll talk to their mother again though! But for the record, my husband has frequently heard people laugh at our childrens names and if I'm honest, we find it a little upsetting! Isn't there anything more interesting for mums to talk about these days?! For the record, it's Amundsen and not Amundson. The little explorers as we call them are named after the explorers of the Northwest passage: Henry Hudson, Martin Frobisher, John Frankin and Roald Amundsen. I worked in the Canadian Arctic and there is a strong Scottish connection with the Arctic and with the Northwest passage. My husband is from Northern Alberta. These names are not unusual in Canada. As a journalist and academic couple we would like our children to follow their passions and be encouraged like we were to be explorers of life. The names have special significance to us, and reflect our life experience, our values and our aspirations for our children. As to how I found this page, I just googled the kids names because they were featured in an online article that I wanted to find the link for. This came up in the search engine so just wanted to put the record straight!

danio7 · 20/02/2011 14:08

MazzzaG · 20/02/2011 22:56

MoreFruitLoopthanFruitShoot · 20/02/2011 23:16

I once worked for a headteacher who was called Richard Head...oh the staff meetings were a hoot!

My DH used to work with a guy called Roger Beaver.

mathanxiety · 21/02/2011 05:38

Jolyon, Monty and Jonty, and there was a sports announcer in the US called Harry Carey (pronounced like hari kari).

They pronounce Harry Potter "Hairy Potter" there too, so anyone called Harry in the US basically...

Zephyr is lovely though. And Xiola. And Axel.

I knew an Alvy Alvy and a Mary Jolly. They both took their husbands' surnames upon marriage for reasons known only to themselves. I'm sure their maiden names would have been far better.

LOL at your DH Lollipopz Grin

There was a Tracy Ireland at a school I worked at 6 or 7 years ago (Thunderbirds - Tracy Island)... Tracy was already a little odd in itself for a 14 or 15 year old, never mind when she had Ireland as a surname!

2and1ontheway · 21/02/2011 13:52

Oh yes and there is an Adonis in our village - not Greek, German farmers son, about 17 and rather thin and spotty, though a nice polite boy - name seems unfortunate or optimistic!

I went to school with 3 sisters called Queen, Beauty and Chance, although they had African heritage and (I think because of that) "got away with it" as in nobody ever took the mickey to my knowledge, I know that Beauty changed her name to Rebecca later, and Chance got a lot of comments behind her back especially from adults (other children's parents) as she was several years younger than her sisters so assumptions were made about how planned she was!

wordsonascreen · 21/02/2011 14:05

This thread is from 08 BTW

gilly I think they're lovely names especially considering the reasons behind them.

wordsonascreen · 21/02/2011 14:07

(and it just goes to show most people don't read the whole thread
