Obviously it's my own fault for choosing the 'one million and 3 baby names' book instead of a more sensible '1000 baby names that are good and you might actually use' book, but COME ON! Some of the names in here are just so ridiculous it's crazy....

Frigg
Schmoopie
Candida
Hitler
Abacus
Flirt
Butter

I can't honestly believe someone would go through this book and think 'hmmm, Sarah, Samantha, Scarlett... Schmoopie. Yes, Schmoopie, the perfect name for our dear daughter.'

And I once looked after a little baby Chlamydia poor foreign parents didn't speak english very well and wanted a name that sounded pretty when you said it

According to an email I received today (which has a copy of his work ID card) there is a man in New Jersey called:

Phani Tikkala

Cote. I know Atillia is a Turkish name but it was a bit strange seeing a born and bred Glaswegian family calling their son that! The Dad had read a book about "some fierce bloke that beat the crap out of folk" (as in Atilla the HUn!!)

My DH's cousin also has kids called Lotus Louise and Porche Helen! They're 27 and 23!! Needless to say they want to be known by their middle names.

BigAxeToChopOffYourThread · 31/10/2008 19:39

The most unusual name I have come across lately is Tudor.

mrsmaidamess · 31/10/2008 19:39

D'Atangnon (As in one of the 3 Muskateers)

Salleroo · 31/10/2008 19:41

Candida is horrendous - trush, essentially. Sorry to all you candidas.
I went to school with a Brian O'Brien and Gerald FitzGerald etc. Serious thought by the parents there.

DH worked with a guy in Oz who called his son Mike Hunt and wanted to call his daughter York but his wife put her foot down!

Salleroo · 31/10/2008 19:42

I love St John (Sinjun)

giddykipper · 31/10/2008 19:44

Nevaeh

Heaven backwards

TequilaMockinBird · 31/10/2008 19:49

Barbiehouse I also know a Robert Sherunkle known as Bob, wonder if its the same one!

I also work with a guy called Paul Ness, his signature always makes me chuckle - P.Ness

Lego
Dan tan - welsh for fire exit (apparently the mother didnt know this and thought dan tan sounded pretty as a girls name)

Littlefish · 31/10/2008 20:17

K'sea (pronounced Casey).

Hideous spelling.

blackhawk · 31/10/2008 20:22

I also knew three brothers, called Cook, Chase and Car.

I'll probably get flamed for this but there's a reg on Netmums (I know, I know, I lurk sometimes)who has a DD called Senna. From the posts I get that the parents are F1 fans so presumably she's named after Ayrton Senna.
Still though, calling your child after something that makes you want to shit?

(can I also say there was a thread on there a while back where it was clear even the NM thought it bizarre)

cthea · 31/10/2008 20:29

Tudor was top of the list for our DS till two weeks before he was born.

Footballers called Precious Koko and Jason Mason (minor team in the SE).

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/10/2008 20:33

Pebbles
(it's a girl)

muggglewump · 31/10/2008 20:36

I know someone who called their son Adam. Their Surname was Marrs and all I heard was Adam Arse.

I am quite critical/judgemental when it comes to name but I keep it to myself, well until this thread anyway.

Feel free to comment on my daughter's name-hard to spell, impossible to pronounce correctly unless you know and I have no connection with the country of it's origin

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/10/2008 20:39

also Aubrey Balls (went to school with my mum)
Pat Balls (friend)
and Fabian Hercules (fabulously camp!)
I also know a little Hercules (Hercy). Very posh indeed.

NorbertDentressangle · 31/10/2008 20:42

I know of a girl called Tuppence

ilovemydog · 31/10/2008 20:54

I know someone named Tuppence!

Went to school with a girl named Michael! And a friend knew twins with the last name Apple called Toffee and Candy

NorbertDentressangle · 31/10/2008 20:58
