Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

I once came across a baby called Lilith. The parents had been inspired by the character on Frasier. They clearly didn't understand the joke.

think I have too! Lilith is a great name - what have I missed? whats the joke?

I have an Italian friend called Valentina - it's a lovely name!

I agree, there was a baby Valentina at DD's nursery, I always loved it

Friendlygingercat · 12/02/2026 15:48

Chantelle.

Villanellesproudmum · 12/02/2026 15:51

There is an Alabama Peach at my child’s nursery. Not first and middle.

I know it's a far from uncommon name in Africa and African heritage communities, but I always think it's very strange giving your child the name Favourite unless you're certain that you won't be having any more children!

Oh they have some lovely names in that region!

I worked in a hotel and came across names from all over the world, but nothing came close to the Sunshine, Glory, Blossom, Rising and Blessing I met!
The ladies names were particularly lovely!

My mother wanted to call me Orianna after a character in a book she read while pregnant. Thank goodness my father was more practical. It sounds like something you would name a cruise ship!

Only 1 N in the ship 😁

Worst name you have ever come across.

My mum was due on Valentine's Day so her parents planned to call her Valentina! I think that would have been pretty bad. Luckily she was late.

I love the name Valentina!

Verypositive · 12/02/2026 16:02

Peter.

One of my DCs was at primary school with a Wednesday whose brother was called Kal-El.
I've just totally outed us.

Slyolfox · 12/02/2026 16:04

Ronnie and Reggie for twins (fine on their own but cringe on twins)

lucifer (I know two who did this)

I decided against Damian even though I really liked the name because I didn’t want my child to sound evil for multiple people to name their children lucifer ffs 😂

I think that sounds beautiful 🤷

It is. It's the name of the wife of Dr Edward Wilson - he went to the South Pole with Robert Falcon Scott (along Captain Oates, Lieutenant Bowers and Petty Officer Evans) with and, of course, they all tragically died on the return journey.

A word spelled backwards - think Nirvana = Anavrin / Heaven = Neveah / Divine = Enivid

one of these is actually real!

Except you've spelt it wrong. Nevaeh.

Malena.
For those not in the know Melena (pronounced the same( means black, tarry poo which indicate intestinal bleeding).

I didn't know that, but have worked with several people called Melina over the years-close enough!

I think some of these names are lovely, like Orianna, Valentine and Valentina.

Me too! Such beautiful and memorable names.

Much nicer than the overused top 10 names….

ladyamy · 12/02/2026 16:08

Binkie for a girl. In Scotland.
Bart for a boy. In Scotland.

Slyolfox · 12/02/2026 16:09

Also forgot to say

Charlie and billie on a girl (including all spelling variations)

DSGS wanted to call his child Jesse if a boy. We all know it is a Biblical name and it is male, and he was thinking of Jesse James, of course, but we all in various ways discouraged it. Baby turned out to be a girl, luckily (though he could have called her Jessica?).

Jesse is super popular though for a boy these days, would have been fine? More popular than Jessica for a girl which is a little dated.

Thank fuck I didn't have a teen pregnancy as I planned to call any baby I had either Heaven, Angel or (this one is the worst/best) Juanita Isabella Venus-Maria but Jazz for short. Brucey bonus to anyone who can get the trashy novel authors connections...

And for anyone wondering, I didn't consider the possibility of having a boy. Only girls allowed.

I have posted this before, but in my Year 8 diary I have a list of top ten names for girls and boys, and the girls' list along with Sandra and Samantha, has Killashandra (from the book The Crystal Singer, which I must re-read, actually, to see why I liked it so much as a 12 year old. No doubt it was totally inappropriate).

twoshedsjackson · 12/02/2026 16:10

The most unfortunate one I came across was a name which did not "translate" well; Harshit (alternatively spelled Harshid, it depends how you transliterate the script) is a perfectly OK name in the home country, but you can imagine the teasing...
Ciliphat, we dodged the issue by calling her Cilla.

Well Adelaide the city was named after Queen Adelaide. But I suppose today it's practically extinct as a name.

104 Adelaides born in England and Wales in 2024. It's a pretty name.

Sorry I just meant that being called Valentina and having a Valentine's Day birthday would be bad IMO. Not the name itself.

My Great-Grandmother was Valentina, born on Valentine's Day! It's my middle name and I love it. DF and DS both have the male version, Valentine, as middle names.
A few people have jumped on you for this one, but I don't think you need to be sorry for having an opinion - tbh, I am posting here under my real name, and I've heard far worse about my first name than the middle one!

The Biff, Chip and Kipper books were written/devised by Roderick Hunt. Why on earth didn't his parents call him Rodney or Rhodri... and why doesn't he just go by Rod?!

I presume it was a latent anger at being given his own name that caused him to project and call his characters Biff, Chip and Kipper!

Roderick is nicer than Rodney. I quite like Roderick. I'd probably shorten to Rick though, over Rod.
