Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

A word spelled backwards - think Nirvana = Anavrin / Heaven = Neveah / Divine = Enivid

one of these is actually real!

Mungo is Hugh Grant's middle name.

It is not Hugh Mungo surely not 🤣🤣🤣

FeeLipa · 12/02/2026 15:08

DD2 went to school with a girl called Beau. ( I love the name and at one point it was in the running for DSs middle name. DH sadly talked me down from naming him Teddy Beau Surname. But he would absolutely suit that name - massive regret for not digging my heels in)

Let's go and visit him together, so we can ask him in person... I'll see you when you get there.

I reckon the grown up Koolio will be very popular and have loads of mates 😁

Frank Zappa named his kids weird names not least of which was Dweezel Zappa. Have to assume that he was on something at the time!

If I was born a boy I would have been called Gilbert, thank the Lord i was born a girl and my Mum was around to veto Dad's preferred names which were Margaret and Frances. Margaret isn't so bad cos it can be shortened to Maggie which I like, but I can't stand Frances or Fran for that matter.

I love Frances!

I saw a lad working in Primark the other day - named Rolex.

You clearly need to watch him.

ivyleafgeranium · 12/02/2026 15:19

I know a Rosy Balls which she has the confidence to fully embrace! Also a child called Sunnygirl which is lovely but a bit risky if they grow into a goth inclined teenager or even just introducing yourself as an adult. I guess you can shorten it to Sunny.

Pony as a nickname is quite fun.

Not if you're a Cockney!

Diana Ross called one of her kids Chudney.

If that’s true that wins the most unpleasant sounding name on this thread.

Hugh John Mungo.
I am sure he's grateful for that John.

All the names with silly spellings and hyphenated add ons

I worked overseas for a bit and children were allowed to use a westernised name instead of their original name. Most families encouraged sensible choices but a couple let the (young) children pick.

I taught a Terminator and a Jumbo. Needless to say, as they got older, they realised the error of their ways and picked sensible names.

I think it would make my day to teach a tiny Terminator 😂 I don’t even hate it and almost hope it gives people on here inspiration.

Friend of the family called Wayne, not too bad until You realised his surname was King.

Very old name that comes from Jewish mythology. Adam's first wife.

Also foremother of Jadis in the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe.

She wasn't just Adams first wife, she was also the original she-devil (which is why Adam got rid of her and married Eve). The scriptwriters gave that name to Frasier's ex wife because she was so awful

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 12/02/2026 15:29

I've actually thought of two more.

Friend of a friend who is a teacher and so should know better has children called Sam and Ella.

And one of my relatives is called John, which I found out a few years ago is his middle name. He prefers it to his first name which turns out to be Ivor. His surname is Stiff......

He could be a great doctor (with a limp) one day. 😂

I got that reference. 😆

Someone told me a story of how DS1 was named Shaun (pronounced shorn) and DS2 was named Sean (pronounced seen) - thought that was awful, if more than a bit funny!

huh..they are different spellings but the same sound...both are "shorn"

Babyijustdontgetit · 12/02/2026 15:42

Herbert for a 9 year old boy… I mean I know it will be shortened to Bert but IMO it’s an old man’s name! Also Wayne .. just eurgh!

were they a fan of Anne of Green Gables by any chance?

Malvarrosa · 12/02/2026 15:46

Husband had a pupil called Thrush. He assumed it was intended to be a nature name, e.g., "if Robin/Wren/Raven is too common, how about ..." There was also a child called Labrador. Both boys.

Oriana (one n) is an old Spanish and Italian name - weirdly, it was popularised (or possibly invented?) by a cycle of 14th century Spanish chivalric/hero stories (Amadís de Gaula) where the hero's wife Oriana was an English princess.

Pony makes me think of Ponyboy Curtis in SE Hinton's "The Outsiders".

Well in rhyming slang, pony is ‘pony and trap’ - crap. It’s not a nickname I would welcome 🤣🤣

Though it was 'spelled' Dweezil. He called another one of his kids Moon Unit.

AdarajamesAgain · 12/02/2026 15:47

Used to know a child called Natty, and no, it wasn't a nn for Natalie, it was short for Natterjack toad!!
