Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

Sorry if mentioned.
Cyanide. The Local Authority went to court and got name changed

Chlamydia
Trouble
Beckham

There really should be rules!

A girl called Glacier. School must be a right laugh for her.

‘You’re a bit frosty today’.
‘Careful outside, it’s roasting, you’ll melt’

I’m not averse to an unusual name but I cannot see any plus points to this one.

CheeseWisely · 17/04/2026 20:18

I’ve actually met the Swedish guy who along with his wife attempted to call their baby Superman (Stålman in Swedish). The Swedish authorities thankfully blocked the attempt.

There is definitely something to said for naming your child Rachel or Michael. Canielle pronounced Janyell or Cemre pronounced Jemree, Shaunee, Shauneesay and Rikkilee were all children who came into my work place almost 25 years ago.

Pasta4Dinner · 27/04/2026 21:07

I’ve just seen locally someone has a child called Ribbon, it’s not even a nice word.

Rachel and Michael very old-fashioned these days! Michael's not bad though.

Cemre is surely just a Turkish name with Turkish pronunciation rather than odd?

Even so, you do have to bear in mind the time and the place where you live. There was a beautiful young woman in the Old Testament called Abishag (sometimes rendered Avishag in English), but I don't hear of many baby girls called that now in English-speaking western countries!

That's very true.

We wimped out of calling DD as middle because we were so convinced that she would have it pronounced, well, Jail.

I still have a soft spot for her when I read my Bible though!

I worked overseas for a bit and children were allowed to use a westernised name instead of their original name. Most families encouraged sensible choices but a couple let the (young) children pick.

I taught a Terminator and a Jumbo. Needless to say, as they got older, they realised the error of their ways and picked sensible names.

I’ve also met a Jumbo! I wonder if it’s the same person!

Generally, the worst names I see are a certain type of US influencer that choose names that you could also name your tractor manufacturing business. I can’t remember any because they are all so ridiculous. Not a real example but things like Hunterson or the aforementioned Lakeland fit the vibe.

Yes Cemre is a Turkish feminine name. I should have elaborated and said this child was a boy.

Yet if they'd called her Sian (pronounced resolutely not in the standard Welsh way) with Ida as a middle name, they'd have got away with it!

I wonder if they heard somebody saying the name Reuben for the first time ever and assumed that it must be 'ribbon'?!

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 29/04/2026 09:32

Jeffrey, I think is a name that might become popular some day

I'm guessing not for quite some time now, though, given a certain infamous island-dweller.

From Google:
Cemre (pronounced jem-REH) is a Turkish unisex name, primarily used for girls but occasionally for boys. It means "ember," "spark," or "fire," representing the warmth that falls from the sky in early spring to warm the air, water, and earth. The name signifies renewal, energy, and the arrival of spring.

There’s a Jaël at my kids school. Pronounced Yaaaa ell.

Didn‘t know it was a biblical name.

It‘s quite a mouthful for a short name

Very popular in the UK Jewish community although I’ve only seen it spelled with an Y - Yael.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 29/04/2026 14:42

The Jael/Yael thing reminds me of the silly old joke about the man attending a job interview. The interviewer notices a 5-year gap in his CV and asks about it.

The man says "Ah, yes, that was when I was in Yale." The employer is very impressed at this and instantly offers the man the position, to which he replies "Thank you very much - I'm overyoyed, because I yust really need this yob!"

Yes, I've known several people with that name, including a close relative. I like the name- the only problem with it is that people who are unfamiliar with it, i.e. non-Jews, sometimes assume that it's a male name. My relative was once asked to share a room on holiday with a man, because the hosts asssumed that she was a man.

With the absence of any other knowledge, I would probably (wrongly, it seems!) assume that it was the actual native-speaker Hebrew pronunciation of the name Joel.

People haven't read the Bible so don't know who Yael was or what she did.

Piglet89 · 29/04/2026 20:56

I once was at Colchester Zoo and heard about three different care givers call for “ARIA!!!!”.

I can only presume that at least one of these youngsters’ brothers was named Recitative.

I know a little Jeffrey, never made me think of Epstein once. It’s not a bad name, they call him Jeffers as a nickname.

I did notice we had a local kid called Crimea though, that made me raise an eyebrow!

Crimea? Middle name River?!

@AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf😂 I hope so!

Reign

I also recently met a baby Gary. Not an unusual name but quite jarring on someone with a rattle and a bib.
