Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

Mortality. Saw it on a waiter’s name badge in a hotel in Lagos (Nigeria).

And, seen in an American magazine, Randy Ponce. (Yes, I know the surname would be pronounced differently in Spanish.).

And Florian Finkbeiner - name on the wrong lunchbox dd1 once brought home from nursery. The child was American.

Roderick is nicer than Rodney. I quite like Roderick. I'd probably shorten to Rick though, over Rod.

I also like roderick, wimpy kid books did ruin it though

Not quite but I am aware of a child named after one of Jupiter’s moons. Lo

The name is Io not Lo. She’s a character from Greek mythology. Beautiful name. I taught one a few years ago.

I quite like some of the names mentioned on here. I'm not a fan of names that don't sound like grown up names (eg Poppy) but no strong reaction.

The name Dave makes my toes curl. It just sounds gross and I've never met one that isn't a twat.

MatchaTea1 · 12/02/2026 16:22

Buddy-Gene is the most not-to-my-taste name that I have come across. The parents are hip east London types though so I am sure in that milieu it was perfectly normal :)

My youngest son has one of the most hated names on mumsnet so I'm prepared to see that one pop up.
I almost changed it when he was little but glad I didn't as he loves it as much as I do.

Jaden?

E.g. Linda, which means poo in some languages too.

Means pretty in Spanish .

ImWearingPantaloons · 12/02/2026 16:25

I knew someone who called their daughter Chyme.

Very…..gastric?

Well, I heard of a child whose parents had named him Mason but insisted it was spelt with an ‘i’ after the a - anyone who knew any French at all, blinked a bit.

There is a TikTok influencer who has called her son this, but pronounced Mason as usual. She says she loves the meaning of the name, but clearly not the pronunciation 😂

My mother wanted to call me Orianna after a character in a book she read while pregnant. Thank goodness my father was more practical. It sounds like something you would name a cruise ship!

There's Oriane de Guermantes in Proust - Orianna/Oriane/Oriana all sound pretty to me.

Jesse is super popular though for a boy these days, would have been fine? More popular than Jessica for a girl which is a little dated.

In Scotland a big jessie was a common derogatory name to mock someone who was a big feartie or gay,

I haven't met anyone with this name, apart from old ladies.

David is a lovely name but Dave has such a different vibe (and not in a good way). I couldn’t imagine a Dave Attenborough, Dave Bowie, Dave Schwimmer. Davey Jones was ok though because he was very cute and Davey suited him.

Paige. Just screams chav to me.

104 Adelaides born in England and Wales in 2024. It's a pretty name.

I love the name Adelaide.

Grammarninja · 12/02/2026 16:33

Gay Hore. Dead now so feel I can mention it. Assuming there isn't another one.

Candida used to be a posh English girls' name - along the lines of Camilla, Arabella and Prunella!

Candida is a 1970s song (Tony Orlando & Dawn)
It’s always mentioned on these threads and gives me an unwelcome earworm.

RatherBeOnVacation · 12/02/2026 16:34

Bre from Selling Sunset named her son “Legendary”. I mean what if he’s just a normal bog standard kind of guy when he gets older?

BlueVelveteen · 12/02/2026 16:35

Jersey. For a girl. So awful that when I was told it I couldn't keep the horror out of my expression.

Justploddingonandon · 12/02/2026 16:36

There was a girl in DS's primary school class called Isis. I felt a bit sorry for her after I did the maths and realized that the name didn't have the connotations it does now when she was born.

I remember the TV critic Nancy Banks-Smith writing about how she loved watching the credits of Twin Peaks because of all the American names - Bambi Sickafoose was one, I believe.

I'm just here waiting for someone whose mate knows someone who called their baby La-a... 🙄

That's always my first thought when a name thread pops up.

There's almost always a 'I really do know someone who named their child this'

Isis is an Ancient Egyptian goddess.

Yes I knew an Isis who unfortunately was born just before the name starting be used for evil.
I grew up near Oxford and the River Thames there is historically called the Isis.
Several Oxford businesses and a school ended up changing their names.
It's sad because as an actual name it's so pretty.
