Promise this will be my last question for a while, haha. It's been so helpful so thank you all!

Regardless of full name, if we call our son by the name Gus, what does it bring to mind?

I'm not personally a fan of the name gus as it reminds me immediately of the word gusset 🙈

I suppose secondary to this is Augustus... As in Gloop... Again, not great! Sorry!

It reminds me of a mouse from one of the Disney movies

HoseGoblin · 14/01/2026 01:36

A pug. Because the only person I've ever known with that name was, in fact, a pug.

It reminds me if a character from a novel but I can't remember which one.

As a name, I'm not keen.

patooties · 14/01/2026 01:38

Gusset - I like Fergus and Angus though.

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

I love Gus! Hard to describe its vibe...cool, straightforward, interesting.

Delphiniumandlupins · 14/01/2026 01:52

Only Gus I know is a (very lovely) Augusta.

hampsteadmum · 14/01/2026 02:08

Greek Americans who were baptised Constantine and shortened their name (inexplicably) to Gus.

crumpet · 14/01/2026 02:11

It’s a good name. I’d assume short for Augustus (and be reminded of the very strong Roman Caesar), but also works with Fergus/Angus- also good names

TappyGilmore · 14/01/2026 02:12

Rhymes with pus

Feejoah · 14/01/2026 02:36

There is an Angus in my 6yo daughter's class and the adults in his life call him Gus or Gussy. He is a wee blonde cutey with glasses.

Mumsnet is the worst place to ask for opinions on baby names....

MrsFrumble · 14/01/2026 02:38

I really like it! I used to work with a Gus (short for August) and he was lovely. For me it conjures someone, friendly, dependable and laid-back.

Angelil · 14/01/2026 02:44

Old man

CynonEileen · 14/01/2026 02:51

Used to work with a Gus, short for Angus, I really like both.

augustusglupe · 14/01/2026 02:53

HipHopDontYouStop · 14/01/2026 02:56

Gus the firefly. And I really like the name.
