What does the name Gus bring to mind? (Last one from me, I promise!)

Promise this will be my last question for a while, haha. It's been so helpful so thank you all!

Regardless of full name, if we call our son by the name Gus, what does it bring to mind?

Augustus Gloop or Boris Johnson

Iocanepowder · 14/01/2026 07:21

Glad i’m not the only one who thinks Gus from Cinderella 😀

TorroFerney · 14/01/2026 07:22

Discount catalogue shop we had in the town I grew up in. Great universal stores.

gulpygulpygators · 14/01/2026 07:23

Gus is the cat at the theatre door, his name as I ought to have told you before, is really Asparagus but that’s such a fuss to pronounce that I usually call him just Gus (TS Elliot)

DemonsandMosquitoes · 14/01/2026 07:30

Augustus Gloop. Not a flattering name.

Nitgel · 14/01/2026 07:35

Polar bear in Central Park zoo who was depressed. Also featured in trgically Hip song. 'Whats troubling Gus?' Sad really so I would think of him:(

It reminds me of a mouse from one of the Disney movies

Me too. Gus Gus.

APurpleSquirrel · 14/01/2026 07:40

One of our cars is called Gus (yes, we name our cars 🚗).

BobbieTables · 14/01/2026 07:41

I'm imagining an older man in red trousers who could be an old school Tory mp, but if it was a kid I'd think quite an original name, probably comes from Islington.

mumonthehill · 14/01/2026 07:41

Well i have a 6ft 4 dc called Angus but always has gone by Gus. I still absolutely love it and he has never ever been bullied for his name and he is quite a sensitive lad.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/01/2026 07:45

Gussie Finknottle ( PG Wodehouse)

Or next door's cat.

NewYearNewJob2024 · 14/01/2026 07:46

One of the mice from Cindarella! I don't dislike it though!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 14/01/2026 01:43

It was from Enid Blyton's Circus of Adventure!

That was my first thought too - he was a prince in disguise (I think) and Kiki called him Fussy Gussy.

80smonster · 14/01/2026 07:49

Gus Fring, international meth manufacturer, from Breaking Bad.

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

This was my first thought but it's very old song.

As a nn for Augustus it's ok

sharkyroy · 14/01/2026 07:51

Nothing really, I’m in Scotland so Gus as a shortening for Angus isn’t at all uncommon

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 14/01/2026 07:52

Reminds me of gusset.

SellFridges · 14/01/2026 07:52

Gustavo Hamer, but I’m a Sheffield United fan.

Came to say this.
@BlueBlueGreenBlue I think that I may love you.

Also Gus Honeybun which probably doesn’t mean a lot to most people.

I like the name Gus.

Gus Honeybun

Ha, same, fellow south westerner! A great day when he read out my birthday message 😀.

BertieWoostersChaps · 14/01/2026 07:55

I know two - one is Angus and the other is a Mexican called Gustavo, goes by Gus. I really like it.
