Promise this will be my last question for a while, haha. It's been so helpful so thank you all!

Regardless of full name, if we call our son by the name Gus, what does it bring to mind?

Disney film or a dog.

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/01/2026 22:56

It’s short for Angus - I prefer it to Angus myself. My friends dog is called Gus. Very cute dog and a cute name.

CeciliaC · 14/01/2026 23:25

Augustus Gloop

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2026 23:38

We caught a lost dog called Gus by luring him with homemade pizza from our picnic lunch. Fortunately his owner was looking for him, all ended happily.

So, Gus is a slightly daft chocolate Labrador.

doodlebee · 15/01/2026 21:54

I know a dog called Gus so it reminds me of a dog! But that's not a negative thing it's just my only association.

Augustus Gloop

He keeps being mentioned but actually he was the nicest character in that movie other than Charlie really.

WulfWulfBeare · 15/01/2026 22:17

Liz Truss. Gus Truss. It also sounds like it would be a good name for a goose — Gus the Goose.

Applepearwhydoicare · 15/01/2026 22:25

Makes me think of Guffs (farts)

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 15/01/2026 22:43

Tv show ‘Recess’

Maybe so, but the lyrics to the song are:

Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop
The great big greedy nincompoop
Augustus Gloop, so big and vile
So greedy, foul, and infantile.

So maybe not the best connotation!

I love Gus! Hard to describe its vibe...cool, straightforward, interesting.

I know 2 Guses, both Angus. One is 8 one is 55. I’d describe both like this, and a little bit low impact/veggie/alternative but in a very good way.

Actually a bit astonishing we once condoned lyrics like that.

I was a bit anti the idea that the Roald Dahl texts were being edited, but coming face to face with them like that again, it is a bit dark ages...

What is wrong with the lyric? The character is a caricature deliberately created to contrast with Charlie for the purpose of a morality tale. And the singers are the Oompa Loompas, who are supposed to be outspoken and judgmental, not the other children.

Are we not allowed to boo at panto villains any more?

It is the repetition of "big" (twice) juxtaposed with vile and foul.

Surely you can see that is fat-shaming at a child audience level?

It reminds me of a mouse from one of the Disney movies

Me too, the chubby, useless one 😁

GoatBusted · 16/01/2026 19:04

The mouse. But I love it!

Cotswoldmama · 16/01/2026 19:10

The little fat mouse in Disney Cinderella comes to mind first. Then Augustus Gloop from Charlie abs the chocolate factory. But I do think it's a cute name!

NotDarkGothicMama · 16/01/2026 19:13

The stupid mouse from Cinderella who nearly gets eaten by the cat.

ETA: I posted my first thought and then scrolled up to see what everyone else had said, so I wasn't influenced, I promise!

I think whatever people initially call to mind when they first hear a name, it's quickly replaced by the actual person they meet, get to know and love.

Namingbaba · 25/01/2026 22:03

I think it's cute. I think of the mouse from Cinderella. I considered using it as a nickname for Fergus. It's a name we're still considering. I think it's best to have a fuller name and use Gus as a nickname.

Giraffehaver · 25/01/2026 22:24

I'm not usually this crude (lies) but I immediately thought of guff which meant fart when I was at school although I love names with gus at the end like Angus or Magnus

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 25/01/2026 22:26

Honestly? It reminds me of the word disgusting. Sorry!

ImthatBoleyngirl · 25/01/2026 23:35

The puppet Gus Honeybun.

bookwormcrazy · 25/01/2026 23:37

The mouse from Cinderella. He was my favourite character.
