What does the name Gus bring to mind? (Last one from me, I promise!)

Promise this will be my last question for a while, haha. It's been so helpful so thank you all!

Regardless of full name, if we call our son by the name Gus, what does it bring to mind?

Simply answering the OP question honestly - it puts me in mond of someone upper class, selfish greedy misogynistic bullying and overweight. I wouldn't use it.

Crikey. I thought of Gus the Theatre Cat. None of those associations at all.

Berlinlover · 14/01/2026 10:10

My grandad’s cousin was called Gus.

boundarysponge · 14/01/2026 10:40

Gus Atkinson England cricketer. You might guess I would say that from my username.

MeAndMyGhost · 14/01/2026 11:04

The psychopath from Breaking Bad.

(Sorry, only Gus I am aware of and he was terrifying)

CurlewKate · 14/01/2026 11:37

I knew many Gusses in my absurdly posh youth… So stripy shirt with turned up collar, navy gurnsey, hunter wellies….

That's the beauty of the anonymity of mumsnet feedback. Quite the opposite to what @Feejoah said upthread, it's the best place to find out all rhe things that the people who love you will never say out loud. I think it's genuinely valuable.

People are of course free to choose names that have negative associations for some people. I doubt there are many names with no negative associations for anybody.

Only Gus I know is a (very lovely) Augusta.

I LOVE Augusta! Totally underused.

I know a rather posh, quite fun Gus. He is Augustus on his BC.

I wouldn't like Gus for a BC name but I think it's a fun and quite fresh nn.

Are you the Raphael poster? Because that one is honestly better. Gus kind of reminds me of guff.

Gus is sooo much better than Raphael!

I cannot imagine a Gus (from the ones I have met) being a Raphael, Raffa etc. Gus is far more solid and kind of manly!

In fairness the one I know is posh and not exactly overweight but played rugby for years and looked the part.

He wasn't bullying or selfish though - quite fun and gregarious.

Actually come to think of it, I know another Gus who is tall, dark and slim. Also posh.

His is short for Angus.

Gusset, gas.
Jeeves and Wooster posh imbecile type.

mixingplaydoh · 14/01/2026 13:39

It’s can sound quite different depending on where in the UK somebody is from.

The reason I say this is it can sometimes feel slightly awkward in a group setting when people with different accents are saying the same name quite differently. But perhaps that’s just my hang up 😆

My neighbour's massive, ugly, and uncontrollable dog.
