What does the name Gus bring to mind? (Last one from me, I promise!)

Promise this will be my last question for a while, haha. It's been so helpful so thank you all!

Regardless of full name, if we call our son by the name Gus, what does it bring to mind?

My son (23) has a friend called Gus. Not short for anything.

It’s a very cool name. I love it.

BestZebbie · 14/01/2026 07:59

Gus is the cat at the theatre door (from TS Eliot/Cats).
Also an annoying manager in Drop the Dead Donkey, but that is no longer a current reference.

I really like the name Gus. Feels solid and dependable. I've known a couple. Both nice lads.

Teajenny7 · 14/01/2026 08:01

I like it. I link names to people. I have known 3 people called Gus. One Angus, one Fergus and one just Gus. All nice people

Gussie Fink-Nottle 😂

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/01/2026 08:07

I’m afraid to say it’s on my name list… for my next spaniel pup! 😂

Eenameenadeeka · 14/01/2026 08:07

I think it's lovely. Sweet and not boisterous. I know a little boy called Gus and he's a lovely child.

If it's good enough for a spaniel 😍 it's definitely good enough for a human ❤️

Dis-gus-ting is the first thing it makes me think, then Augustus Gloop, then Great Universal Stores which had the logo GUS. So not great overall.

Penelope23145 · 14/01/2026 08:14

Sorry but the first thing that came into my mind was Augustus Gloop form charlie and the chocolate factory.

JoleneYouCanHaveHim · 14/01/2026 08:21

It’s just not a very nice sound really, a bit of a nothing kinda name

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/01/2026 08:25

Well I think so @WinterFrogs!

Ha, same, fellow south westerner! A great day when he read out my birthday message 😀.

With birthday bounces!

Violetparis · 14/01/2026 08:29

Fat - maybe due to Augustus Gloop.

The mouse in Cinderella.

champagnetrial · 14/01/2026 08:55

Are you the Raphael poster? Because that one is honestly better. Gus kind of reminds me of guff.

TubeScreamer · 14/01/2026 08:55

Lovely friend one of my children had at primary school

I love Gus! Hard to describe its vibe...cool, straightforward, interesting.

This. It’s v middle class/ creative in London

yonem · 14/01/2026 09:55

The nerdy character from Recess

It has a really horrible sound to it imo. Augustus/August are a bit overdone at the moment as well. I know several babies with those names.

Frequency · 14/01/2026 09:58

My dog is called Gus. He was named after the mouse in Cinderella. Although we do usually call him Augoosetus or Goose instead. It still reminds me of either a mouse or a dog.
