Thoughts on the name Wybie?

we really like this name for our baby boy but everyone we have told in real life hates it and says he would be bullied as he grows older. But this generation of children has all sorts of names and I don’t think it’s a name that’s bully worthy?

Wouldn't everyone write it YB?

Yes from coraline!

This has to be a windup.

There are so many names ending in Ey surely you can pick one that is not Whybie, look at the meanings. We settled on our names for the meanings. We had a few ideas then picked ultimately on the meanings and heritage. Have you looked at your family tree. There are some great names in our ancestral history that I have earmarked after doing the tree that I would use if I had another child.

dontletmedownbruce · 21/10/2025 14:26

Why she be called that, when there are so many real names to choose from?

PragmaticIsh · 21/10/2025 14:26

Herbie?

BotterMon · 21/10/2025 14:27

In the words of McEnroe - You cannot be serious!

There are some countries where ridiculous names are vetoed when registering the child. Needs to be the case here with made up names like this which would cause the poor kid no end of piss taking.

Calliopespa · 21/10/2025 14:27

How about Albie?

TheaBrandt1 · 21/10/2025 14:27

Your Dh should trial run it when he next meets people he doesn’t know. That will be a glimpse into your son’s life with that name.

Are you mid pregnancy? I came up
with some hideous corkers at that stage. My now teens are horrified at what they were nearly called before sanity prevailed.

Onearmedscissor · 21/10/2025 14:27

It sounds like an internet provider but I came across a baby Basil the other day and if I was a boy i'd prefer to be called Wybie(!)

MissDoubleU · 21/10/2025 14:27

Would it help make up your mind if you knew the sexual accusations against the writer of coralline..?

Also remember how he’s called “Why-born” for the first half of the story?

Children aren’t posters for your fandoms OP. Also this in general just absolutely sucks as a name. I’d pick a different name.

Irritatedandsad · 21/10/2025 14:29

Also, after naming our child a particular name I do wish I had chosen a different name and heres why.
I think names give a certain perception of the child and family before people have met them.
I think names do form part of a childs personality.
I hate shouting the name across a playground or supermarket 😂

Hohumdedum · 21/10/2025 14:30

Sorry, but I hate it. It sounds like Wall-E's sibling to me.

Also too much scope for "Why be..." jokes.

Hfstjsufysyfykdhoxg · 21/10/2025 14:30

It sounds like a budget airline

KellsBells7 · 21/10/2025 14:31

This can’t be real. Inflicting a name like that on a child that has to go to school 🤣. Can you imagine!

Zempy · 21/10/2025 14:33

Is this a joke?

AutumnCosy2025 · 21/10/2025 14:33

BatchCookBabe · 21/10/2025 13:50

THIS is one of the first pics to come up when you google Wybie!

@Lilacbluewaters

don't be daft.

cooldarkroom · 21/10/2025 14:35

Charlie, Davy, Johnny, Joey, Come on, there are hundreds of options.
Whybie is terrible

Calliopespa · 21/10/2025 14:36

There is Hymie.

I've never been a huge fan (sounds like a guy who has a thing about hymens) but I think it would be better.

I think the Wybie short for Wyborn had "why were you even born?" vibes. It just doesn't work op.

But names like Hymie or Albie have a similar sound?

Sugarpopsicle · 21/10/2025 14:36

I’m afraid that name is deeply unappealing. I don’t think you should subject your child to that name.

Noshadelamp · 21/10/2025 14:36

Topseyt123 · 21/10/2025 13:58

I too was going to ask about the pronunciation.

I've never heard of this name except in Coraline (by Neil Gaiman).

It's one thing for a book/film character but not for a real human child surely!! I mean "why-be" so awful to your poor baby?? He will have to grow up with a lifetime of explaining and embarrassment about his ridiculous name. That's if he doesn't change it by deed poll as soon as he is able.

Just no! Don't! Is this pregnancy hormones getting the better of you?

The Neil Gaiman connection would be enough for me, let alone everything else!

Fifiesta · 21/10/2025 14:38

I didn’t know anything about Coraline, but honestly my first thought was, sounds like a name for a house robot.
There will be other names with a similar sound that you will like OP.
My first thought is Rafferty - short version Raffy.
