Thoughts on the name Wybie?

we really like this name for our baby boy but everyone we have told in real life hates it and says he would be bullied as he grows older. But this generation of children has all sorts of names and I don’t think it’s a name that’s bully worthy?

No.

I didn’t say private schools. I know children are open to bullying in any setting but schools are rife for it. And of course bullying continues into adulthood

So why give your child a name that pretty much guarantees it? Do t be so ridiculous

Gonners · 21/10/2025 18:47

Completely off-topic, of course, but I see it's half-term and rather cold and damp outside.

Dabralor · 21/10/2025 18:48

Why be giving your baby a name that is so fraught with complication?

what about:

Miley
Wylie
Shelby
Albie

No it's the "are you still going to call him that now we've told you its shit?" ; "People will think the child has parents who are abusive/ unhinged etc."

That goes way beyond opinion. and there's something odd but NOT nice about those posters.

thank you, to say parents are abusive for certain name choices is absurd. I think people need to look at what an actual abusive parent is

If this is genuine, and I have my doubts, being a parent means putting them first. Not indulging whims which will unnecessarily make life difficult for them.

I have a boy and a girl. I spent a lot of time choosing names that they could pretty much fit in anywhere with. And it’s worked.

If real, you are being ridiculously selfish in thinking of choosing a name which is plain stupid

My daughter had a Digby in her class - he got teased even more than Silvercup and Angelfaith 😳

Maybe named after the Yamaha yb100

BunnyLake · 21/10/2025 20:29

Ask the father of your child if he would have honestly liked it as his name? Or ask any male you know.

BeaLola · 21/10/2025 20:45

Whynot instead

Seriously

Louisetopaz21 · 21/10/2025 20:46

Not a name I would choose but you aren't me

Catwoman8 · 21/10/2025 20:52

It doesnt matter what school setting he goes to, children will poke fun at a silly name and he will get all sorts of nicknames and teased for it. Why risk that for your child?

Also , what about when he becomes an adult? Whilst Wybie might sound cute as a name for a child (to you), are people going to take him seriously as an adult with a name like that? He wouldnt even be able to shorten it to something sensible.

clary · 21/10/2025 20:54

@Lilacbluewaters where will your dc be going to school that you can be sure there will be no vile bullies? Bullying is nasty for sure. It's also everywhere. Unless you are HEing but even then they will meet other DC (I hope) and I think even the nicest might raise an eyebrow at Wybie (sorry I spelled it wrong before). I'm quite nice and not a bully but I don't think it's a,good choice, for all the reasons given.

HatStickBoots · 21/10/2025 20:57

I don’t like the name Wybie.
Other names:
Wylie, Frankie, Douggie, Paulie, Jeremy, Eddie, Billy, Toby, Robbie, Timothy, Stevie… ?

Sassylovesbooks · 21/10/2025 21:11

It's not really a name though is it?! It's a made up name, given to a specific character in a movie, for a particular reason! Whybe - short for Whyborn - as in Why were you born. It's dreadful. Please don't saddle your child with this! He will stand out at school for all the wrong reasons - his weird name!
