Thoughts on the name Wybie?

we really like this name for our baby boy but everyone we have told in real life hates it and says he would be bullied as he grows older. But this generation of children has all sorts of names and I don’t think it’s a name that’s bully worthy?

Dreadful. Don’t do it.

Topseyt123 · 21/10/2025 18:04

I think you are an "everyone is out of step except me" kind of person. At least on this thread.

You asked for people's opinions and you got them. It's virtually unanimous saying that it is a totally shit name but you don't like hearing that and still think it's fine because your child apparently won't be going to mainstream school with everyone else's vile offspring.

I can only hope that when you meet your new baby for the very first time you realise then how utterly horrendous this "name" is and have a serious rethink. Have a word with yourself!

@Lilacbluewaters
You are delusional if you think private schools don’t have vile bullying kids. Or if you think all other people share your ideas of how things should work.
Just because YOU can’t imagine something happening - doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Plenty of bullying is happening in the most expensive and selective schools - my kids have been in what you call ‘non-mainstream’ since birth…

I didn’t say private schools. I know children are open to bullying in any setting but schools are rife for it. And of course bullying continues into adulthood

I do have other name ideas 😂 but thank you for the input. I do appreciate the honesty of those being polite but some people on here are a tad harsh. It’s not like I have actually legally named my child that, it was a name I liked.

You know Wybie is his nickname in the movie right?

His name is Wyborn. Why born. It’s a huge talking point of the movie how terrible that name is and Coraline makes fun of him shouting “why were you born”

I just couldn’t imagine anyone telling their son that that was the source of their name. Out of literally anything else.. Wyborn.

So, won't Wybie be going to any school at all then?

DoYouReally · 21/10/2025 18:08

Why be? Nope, not a good choice.

There are loads of names ending in an ee sound which are lovely...

Alfie
Andy
Toby
Tony
Bobby
Robbie
Tommy
Bradley
Jamie
Brody

@Lilacbluewaters
Whatever setting you chose - your child will
at some point have to leave home and encounter kids thinking his name is weird; and adults who’ll think the parents are, well, pretentious? Unhinged? Unaware? Abusive?… to saddle their child with a name like this.

But you seem to like this contrarian stance vs common sense or else you’d have at least some doubt based on people who know you; and unanimous strangers on here.
If this is how you approach life - and it gives you this special feeling of being different to everybody else - of course you can name your kid anything.

At 18 he’ll be able to use deed poll to rid himself of this made up non-name.
Poor kid.

Not at all. I appreciate the response of those being polite, the insight is helpful. I honestly didn’t know if it was just family that didn’t like the name, as they hated the name Clementine for my firstborn but now love it.

I think it’s really important for any parent to not just focus on what they like when a name is too out there, but to really think about the child who is going to have the name.

Did you make it up?

So, now that you can see that it isn't just your family and friends who think it is such a shit name, are you still going to use it?

It's from the book Coraline by Neil Gaiman.

Why are people being so mean? There have been numerous threads lately that are clearly designed to make people say rude things about certain styles of name but I don't think this was one of them.

She just liked a name that doesn't really work because of a book/movie.

Terrible name...Wee....Be.....

Its not nice, but kiddies are mean

Giddykiddy · 21/10/2025 18:35

Hideous!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 21/10/2025 18:36

There’s something nice but odd about posters who say “don’t be mean”.

Nice sentiment.

But odd because pointing out that a name is a horrendous choice, and would probably lead to a lifetime of misery for the child, is inevitably ’mean’. Unless people want dishonest answers.

No it's the "are you still going to call him that now we've told you its shit?" ; "People will think the child has parents who are abusive/ unhinged etc."

That goes way beyond opinion. and there's something odd but NOT nice about those posters.

RaininSummer · 21/10/2025 18:40

I have never heard that name. It's pretty dreadful. Also lends itself to endless silly kid jokes.

People WILL think that. Perhaps including the child themselves.

One of my DDs knew a boy at school who had a similarly awful name and whenever he had to introduce himself to anyone new he always said that his parents hated him when he was born. I did find that rather sad and couldn't help feeling sorry for him.

Ok, there will be unecessarily rude posters on any thread. Although never that many of them.

And TBF, the OP hasn’t covered herself in glory with her lofty and dismissive comments.
