Thoughts on the name Wybie?

we really like this name for our baby boy but everyone we have told in real life hates it and says he would be bullied as he grows older. But this generation of children has all sorts of names and I don’t think it’s a name that’s bully worthy?

Honestly just thought it was a nice name. I’d like a boy name ending in the ee sound but can’t for the life of me find anything else I like!

Harry
Charlie
Benji
Olly
Andy
Arthur but use Arty or Arthie
Tommy
Zach but go by zachy

There's loads with the ee sound and are also names that can officially be the longer name so he can change it as he gets older. I don't like whybie sorry and I'm used to a lot of 'modern' names as work in schools

Dave - nice solid name.

Are you being serious 😂 vile

Why Be????

lets give a child a reason to not want to exist from the time they are born….

And yes - even with all sorts of weird and pretentious names around - this one is out there as one of the worst….
And it is most certainly bully-worthy and, in fact, bully-encouraging

It is funny to see the trajectory of threads like this. People start off by expressing reasonable and moderate criticisms, but once it is clear that there is a consensus against the name the tone of the posts gets harsher and harsher, with a few 'This must be a troll/joke/reverse thread!' thrown in for good measure.

It's like some people on the thread (not all, obvs) scent blood and start trying to out-do one another with the extremity of their disapproval. Like wolves descending on a deer isolated from the herd.

Honestly 😂 did not expect this much of a reaction, they aren’t being very helpful either by offering nice names

what’s wrong with Dave? It’s a nice normal name and your child won’t be bullied for years. Surely anything is better than Wybie?!!

This is the sort of thing a bully would say. I can’t imagine ever bullying someone over their name. My children won’t be in mainstream school anyway, objectified to these vile children that think it is okay to bully. Parents should be teaching their children it is not ok to bully under any circumstances.

Did you really just call children attending mainstream school 'vile'?

You asked for opinions and they were given.

Lilacbluewaters · 21/10/2025 17:48

Read it again and stop pulling apart what you want to read. I said the vile children that think it is okay to bully.

OP I’m sorry you are feeling a bit bruised by this thread.

In the end of the day you can call your child whatever you and your husband prefer- regardless of what MN thinks.

(MN doesnt generally like my name either and I think it’s a great name) 🙂

Be a bit careful though, your child has to bear the consequence of the name you choose for their whole life (not just as a child). Giving your child an unusual name (as I did myself) means they will be asked to explain it regularly. You need to consider how a 45 year old accountant (or whatever) will feel about explaining Coraline - maybe fine of course, but it’s worth thinking about.

And regardless of which educational setting you choose there will be some horrible child teasing someone for their name, nose, hair, glasses, behaviour, coat etc etc etc.

Of course their parents should teach them not to, but it’s entirely unrealistic to expect your child to never meet an unpleasant person.

It is just possible your own child might not behave perfectly all the time.

DwarfBeans · 21/10/2025 18:03

Please don’t do this to your son. Get a hamster for the name instead.

@Lilacbluewaters
You are delusional if you think private schools don’t have vile bullying kids. Or if you think all other people share your ideas of how things should work.
Just because YOU can’t imagine something happening - doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Plenty of bullying is happening in the most expensive and selective schools - my kids have been in what you call ‘non-mainstream’ since birth…
