We’re looking for actually unique girls names for dd2 please (first dd has very unique name so need something to match!). Keep googling lists and they come up with names like “Tracey”, “Chloe” which are lovely names but I wouldn’t say unique! Please help.

What’s your definition of unique? If you just mean unpopular, have a look at the ONS baby name data and look for names outside the top 100.

I went to school with a girl called Merle. Apart from the actor Merle Oberon, this name never comes up on suggestions to my knowledge. It's a beautiful name.

Unique means only one of, so you'll need to make up a name.

Something can't be 'very unique'.

Merle Haggard, the US country music singer-songwriter, is a rather more recent Merle, and why, I suspect, it doesn’t get used more often.

Mistyglade · 01/04/2025 09:58

I think Clemence, Seraphina, Adina, Effie, Allegra, Alessia are all very pretty.

What is your first daughter’s name if you don’t mind sharing? It might help people know what kind of vibe you like / might be looking for, for DD2

HeCharters · 01/04/2025 10:27

Salome, Tamar, Carmel, Cherith and Dorcas are underused biblical names.

clary · 01/04/2025 10:32

I agree with those who say we need to know more about what you mean by unique.

A truly unique name would be made up and the only one. Presuming you don’t want to call your dd an actual made up word, are you looking for an underused name from times past, or an unusual spelling of a current name?

FWIW I know people with several of the names on @mummysmagicmedicine ‘s lovely list - which just shows that one person’s rarely heard is another’s pretty popular.

WellDoneHun · 01/04/2025 11:53

Unique as in not frequently used anymore like Pat or Beryl?
or do you mean unique as in Disneyannaleigh?

loropianalover · 01/04/2025 11:56

Can you share DD1 name? I think that would give us a good idea of what you mean by ‘unique’, did you make up her name or is just uncommon where you live?

BillyILash · 01/04/2025 11:58

There is no such thing as a unique name, uncommon yes, but unless your making a name up there isn’t a unique name.

need some help on what your looking for..

ImFineItsAllFine · 01/04/2025 12:00

I went to school with a girl called Amaryllis. Never met another one since!

GreyhoundGal1 · 01/04/2025 12:04

Some examples of names with less than 3 girls called it last year but that I've still heard of before, as per the ONS: Ainsleigh, Artemisia, Belinda, Cheryl, Danika, Doreen, Edwina, Eugenie, Georgette, Isolde, Kristen, Letitia, Magda, Nicolette, Portia, Thomasina, Theodosia, Virginia. Only 3 girls were called Tracey last year too so it is a rare name now!

Or options like Yvette or Zinnia have under 10. I'd suggest looking through the ONS list for inspiration.

They are lovely!

LoudDenimEagle · 01/04/2025 12:34

My daughter has a very rare name but yes unique would have to be made up, not just odd names. We have two Rockets in my kids school for example!

lovestorms · 01/04/2025 12:45

Ploy.
Unique - means unique my nan was call unique.
chi.
Mai- future promise also means no.
Fah- means blue sky

MrsSunshine2b · 01/04/2025 12:45

If it's pretty, and other people agree that it's pretty, then it won't be unique. That's how popularity works. If no-one else is using it, there are 3 possibilities:

  1. No-one else thinks it's pretty
  2. No-one else has heard of it- very unlikely in the age of the internet
  3. You made it up

If you think it's 2, then the chances are people have heard of it and also think they've given their child a unique name. This is why my daughter knows 3 girls named Aurelia.

Mumofgirls2017 · 01/04/2025 12:58

Not unique (but you could probably come up with some you’d like yourself) but outside the top 300 now and mostly historically in uk perhaps….

seraphina
Calliope
luella
clover
romilly
coralie
zinnia
xanthe
cassia
dorothea
thalia
dahlia
evelina
marigold
leonie
magnolia
florentina
lumi
elva

of this list I know 12 people with these names though, but maybe that’s why I’ve mentioned them as I know them!
