We’re looking for actually unique girls names for dd2 please (first dd has very unique name so need something to match!). Keep googling lists and they come up with names like “Tracey”, “Chloe” which are lovely names but I wouldn’t say unique! Please help.

@Chocolatebuttonanyone , it's Lettice
@NonComm , they are, aren't they. Other than Salome and Tamar, I know one of each. I don't know a Salome or Tamar. Most names are nice until they get too popular.
@lovestorms ,you've lost me there. Mai looks like a bad spelling of May.

RoseRedorDead · 01/04/2025 13:10

Nuela
Sylvie/ Sylvia
Anghared
Flora
Ffionne
Morven

Unique means only one of, so you'll need to make up a name.

Something can't be 'very unique'.

Agree with this. Fill your boots

Salome, Tamar, Carmel, Cherith and Dorcas are underused biblical names.

Carmels are ten a penny around here — women in their sixties or seventies. And it’s fairly clear why Tamar is underused, surely? I can’t remember her whole story, only that she prostitutes herself to her FIL at a crossroads in order to get pregnant, after neither of his sons do it. And Dorcas Societies probably put people off using Dorcas, it’s such a drudge of a name. I quite like Cherith, but I suppose it reminds people of the rather dated Cheryl.

HeCharters · 01/04/2025 16:23

@RoseRedorDead , they are Angharad and Ffion, and they're ten-a-penny in Wales.

@Boligrafo , I know two Carmels and they are both middle aged. Both are 'Car-MEL'. One is a man, the other a woman.

I’ve never met a male Carmel. How interesting. Where is he from?

i think Lark is beautiful , hubby said no!! Also I thought Tamar was really lovely it’s somewhere in the bible , pronounced like Tamara without the A.

As I said up the thread, Tamar in Genesis, having been married to two brothers without having a son, disguises herself as a prostitute and has sex with her FIL to secure a child of the right lineage. It’s not the most obviously appealing story…

I know a Salome and lots of Tamars. Tamar is the Israeli equivalent of Olivia. There is quite a large Jewish community where I live, and modern Hebrew nature names are quite popular (Tamar means date palm).

I know a Zerynthia, which I think is a great name.

What is a “very unique” (the very is redundant here, btw) name, if not made up?!

CurlewKate · 01/04/2025 16:59

My bother’s step children had genuinely unique names. One a number, one a herb and one a meteorological condition. They all hated them and one by one refused to go to Secondary school until they were allowed to change them. They are adults now and don’t regret their decision. Please don’t deny your children to be anonymous if they want to be.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 01/04/2025 17:00

My DD went to school with a girl called Devon... never met anyone else with this name. So pretty unique and a bit out there!

YourChirpyFatball · 01/04/2025 17:01

What about Namelie/Namerley/Namerleigh a name made up with name in it. ☺️

ThisUniqueDreamer · 01/04/2025 17:02

Talitha

Marcipix · 01/04/2025 17:02

I know two women named Tamar. One of them definitely after the river.
However I’ve never met a Salomé.

Seraphinas are two a penny and all called Phina.

Bitethehandthatfeedsyou · 01/04/2025 17:02

I love the name Eartha (I do appreciate I might be in the minority there, though ;)

Marcipix · 01/04/2025 17:03

We had two boys called Devon in nursery.

Geneticsbunny · 01/04/2025 17:04

Londonmummy66 · 01/04/2025 17:06

Google girls names from mythology and you'll get a long list with various ethnic backgrounds - a lot are both unusual and pretty.

HeCharters · 01/04/2025 17:12
