We’re looking for actually unique girls names for dd2 please (first dd has very unique name so need something to match!). Keep googling lists and they come up with names like “Tracey”, “Chloe” which are lovely names but I wouldn’t say unique! Please help.

Do you mean Lettice?

and do you know the story of or seen the Waterhouse painting of the young Christian martyr Eulalia?

Whoarethoseguys · 13/04/2025 15:10

Unique means no one else has the name. So it would have to be something you have made up which I wouldn't recommend
If you mean a real but unusual name what sort of names do you like?
Do you prefer long names? flowery names? Victorian names? Or more modern names.
I don't know if these are to your taste but a few names I think are less common but not unique are

Margareite
Penelope
Clementine
Cassiopeia
Ursula
Clemency
Jessamy
Posy
Aster
Yvette
Ariadne
Ingrid
Naomi
Harriet

My daughter is Merryn, pronounced Meh-rin.

I also liked Juniper/Juno.

Genevive with Vivi for short but I knew it would likely become Gen/Genny which i don't like.

Astrid, but that's not too unusual now, same with Margo(t)

I have heard of a few Mabwls, Dotty/Dorothy/Polly/Penelope. All lovely names coming back.

Whatever you choose will likely get more popular. My eldest 2 had names not in the top 100 when I used them 20-25yrs ago, and they are both top 20 names now.

comoatoupeira · 13/04/2025 15:38

Merryn is beautiful.

Another one I wanted to mention that someone suggested: Leandra.

A lot more unusual these days than a lot of the other names suggested on here! Sounds lovely and easy to spell too. Traditionally “shortened” to Polly.

Mary is shortened to Molly.

ToadRage · 03/05/2025 10:44

I tend to turn to literature or family history for unique names.
Some I've come across are:
Demelza
Clowance
Aurelia
Lyra
Tryphena
Aurora
Loveday
Dolphin
Fuchsia (this is our choice for a girl)
Eleri
Ophelia
Marianne
Marigold

ExitPursuedByABare · 03/05/2025 10:33

Mary is shortened to Molly.

There are loads of traditional diminutives of Mary. Polly, Molly and many more.

HeCharters · 03/05/2025 14:46

Demelza - Poldark, hamlet in Cornwall
Clowance - Poldark. an estate in Cornwall. Julia is nicer
Aurelia - not unique
Lyra - not unique
Aurora - not unique
Ophelia - not unique
Marianne - not unique
Eleri - quite ordinary in Wales

Too out there:
Tryphena
Loveday
Dolphin (sounds like a pub)
Fuchsia (this is our choice for a girl) - bear in mind that the name is Fuchs+ia, I'd give that one a miss
Marigold

Regretsmorethanafew · 01/04/2025 09:52

I don't think people know what unique means.

No they don’t on baby name threads.

HeCharters · 03/05/2025 15:03

Doesn't it mean 'I don't know anyone with this name'? Wink
Very unique means 'so out there not many would dare use it'.
And timeless means 'name made famous by an actress/other celebrity that has a flurry of popularity fairly recently. Smile
Underused means 'the rest of us know 4 babies with this name'
Classic means currently very popular but the trend will soon pass.

Are you aware the Fuchsia is pronounced F-you-shah not F-uk-c-a.
All the names you said are too out there are all names that have been found in my family history, that's offensive.

HeCharters · 03/05/2025 19:20

@ToadRage , Fuchsia is pronounced Fewsha, but the flower was named after someone called Fuchs. Dahlia, the flower, is Dail-ya, but the name is Dahl-y-a.

There are some names in my family tree that are 'out there', and if I listed them, you may think they were dreadful.
I don't think it's offensive to say that Dolphin is not a suitable name for a girl.

I think Clemence, Seraphina, Adina, Effie, Allegra, Alessia are all very pretty.

Looove Seraphina! So many potential nicknames and not one your hear often.

notatinydancer · 03/05/2025 14:48

No they don’t on baby name threads.

I'd say get data into it.

In the UK if you want to check names usage last year and before you csn Google. "Uk baby names <and the name>" and then select this site https://www.ukbabynames.com/girls/clara . (On site search is poor so google is best)

Scroll to the a graph of name usage over time. Anything in the 1000s could be thought of as 'unique' - In that your child is unlikely to meet another one of their namesakes, occasionally names are so rare they aren't featured but overwhelmingly they are.

Good luck

@Daddyfool998 ,That site is unreliable. The reliable data is available at
Baby names in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics
Baby names in England & Wales since 1996

Daddyfool998 · 10/05/2025 11:56

@hecharters They say they use that data

"To help you make this important choice we have compiled a comprehensive resource based on the UK government baby names statistics. We hope this will provide you with an insight into both popular and unusual choices for your baby's name."

Use or don't use ... I think it's powerful.

Live births - Office for National Statistics

@Daddyfool998 , it might do but there is duff info on the site.
For example, the Arabic names list includes Skye, Martha and Amber, the Irish names includes names that clearly aren't Irish or from Irish origin.

The darkgreener site uses the ONS dara.
