18 weeks with a baby girl.
I adore the name Olive but our surname is Brown.
Olive Brown.
It’s a bit too Dulux colour chart isn’t it :(

Any other suggestions welcome! (Or change my mind and convince me Olive Brown isn’t ridiculous 😅)

This has been covered, but it’s literally half a century ago.

Exactly 🙄

It's one of the least glamourous names I can think of. It's like Beryl, Vera, Bertha.

My Grandma was a Bertha. Most adorable gorgeous person. From two of the names that were given to her 4 sisters and the fact there were a lot of brothers and my Grandma was told the wrong day for her birthday I can only conclude my Great-grandma had a lot on her plate and couldn't come up with anything else. She didn't even give my poor Grandma a middle name. Just plain Bertha

Pooeys · 27/09/2024 22:54

Olive Brown is absolutely gorgeous. She will be her own person regardless of what anonymous people think.X

The juvenile in me is laughing that Pooeys has quoted Bumcake in a response.

HarrytheHobbit · 27/09/2024 22:56

Nice name but a bit Dot Cotton's cousin.

Icantstaymarriedtoyoudavid · 27/09/2024 22:56

Yes it's almost as if it's set up that way lol

Exactly 🙄

And yet, its been mentioned on here many times, so clearly a lot of people remember it or at least are aware of the character.

I actually felt so sorry for Olive, she was treated appallingly by her husband and his friends, and was ridiculed for how she looked. If she had been a much stronger "up yours" character it might be different, but the character was supposed to be dowdy and dreary because of course that made it ok to verbally abuse a woman.

@MrsB2019x These Olive on the buses etc references are so dated
Olive Gray? Actress
Olive Mannella? Dancer
Olive Brown? your daughter! lol
They're all colourful names

I agree. I barely remember On The Buses as I was little when it was on but I do remember cringing at the way the main female character was treated, even as a child watching reruns. It was so misogynistic when I come to think about it now.

The younger generation likes the name Olive and I think that’s all that matters. They all laugh at names like Debbie, Tracy etc!

leopardski · 27/09/2024 22:59

Saying it out loud sounds like ‘I love brown’ so yeah it might not be the best choice, OP!

myfarmilyandotheranimals · 27/09/2024 23:00

If only your surname was Branch 😄

Olivia is ermmm so unimaginative..each to their own! Olive is a lovely name and quite popular . I know a couple of Olives and their parents are absolutely not interested in a program from the 70s ..they have chosen a name that they love.

Olivia 'may' be unimaginative, but it's heaps better than the naff and drab name Olive. I would never inflict that name on a child! 😬

!

Do the younger generation REALLY laugh at names like Debbie and Tracy? Confused

I doubt it.

I love it. Olive Brown has a certain je ne sais quoi :)

Agree to disagree,I think Olivia is naff and boring 🙄

Twinklewonderkins · 27/09/2024 23:08

Someone in my daughters graduating class was called Autumn Brown which I thought was lovely.
gp for it if you love it.

Agree to disagree yes. I think the name Olive is hideous.

Icantstaymarriedtoyoudavid · 27/09/2024 23:09

Olive Beamish was an Irish suffragette but she used a pseudonym when arrested. Was it Phyllis?

Yes, you’ve said. Are you called Olivia?

LadyLapsang · 27/09/2024 23:10

On the buses…. It must say something that so many of us instantly think of a character from a sitcom that ended in 1973. Olivia is nice.

Even my friends and I laugh about those names now as they are so 1970s. Also Kevin.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/09/2024 23:11

Yeah, many people will think of the colour rather than the fruit - so it does sound very paint chart, sorry. Brown is a tricky surname for that.

Is it the style of Olive you like or the sound?
Polly has both I think (although it’s not my personal taste) . Or if it’s just the retro style you like then there’s loads of options- maybe Florence, Josephine, Mabel, Sybil, Edith, Alma, Iris or Sylvie/Sylvia?
