18 weeks with a baby girl.
I adore the name Olive but our surname is Brown.
Olive Brown.
It’s a bit too Dulux colour chart isn’t it :(

Any other suggestions welcome! (Or change my mind and convince me Olive Brown isn’t ridiculous 😅)

Olive Brown is ok, if you like the name Olive. Olivia is nicer though.

No it doesn’t. As I said, younger parents won’t know who it is but for me Olive will forever be a particular character, not that it matters one iota. I remember when, I think it was Drew Barrymore or Isla Fisher, called their daughter Olive I was genuinely shocked. I’ve got used to it more now though as it seems to have got more popular with younger generations. Oh I now remember Marie Osmond having Olive as her actual first name and that shocked me as well lol. It’s only because it had such awful dreary connotations back in the 60s/70s. It’s quite trendy now.

It really is a lovely name…I was a 60s child and genuinely cannot remember this program..maybe people need to move on ,it’s now 2024 🤦‍♀️The only Olive that I have ever met was amazing ,kind and caring. She died a few years ago and donated her body to help further generations.

It doesn't sound too much like Eva Braun. It sounds exactly like Eva Braun! Braun in German is pronounced Brown.

Don't call your kid Eva Brown/Braun!

Exactly. Braun doesn't rhyme with faun or drawn.

MollsDolls · 27/09/2024 22:31

I think it's lovely. I don't picture someone drab at all. And you can always call her Ollie for short.
Out of curiosity, what name does your hubby like?

WalkingaroundJardine · 27/09/2024 22:33

I think you should keep Olive too. I think it’s a gorgeous name and have used it in my creative writing as the name for the protagonist’s 12 year old daughter.

Any child born now wouldn’t have even a Grandparent who remembers On the buses ..and if they do ,will the child care ? There are so many more names that are beautiful that can be associated with far worse memories!! I personally love the name Olive ,it is a beautiful name associated with nature.X

On the buses was 1969-1973. So yes there are some of us grandparents that remember the programme. The writers were horrible to/about the character called Olive

Olive is not a name that immediately sprang to my mind but a lot of the older names are coming back into fashion.

There have been some lovely suggestions on here. But if you really love it, go for it

Icantstaymarriedtoyoudavid · 27/09/2024 22:35

You can :) It's a cool name. Olive Brown.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/09/2024 22:35

Ellerby83 · 27/09/2024 22:16

Not keen on Olive it reminds me of On the buses, Olive Oyl, Olive oil and olives. Agree that Olive Brown does sound like a colour and is a bit dreary.

Definitely avoid Eva

I think of On The Buses too and my head mistress

Like another poster, I think Brown is a blank canvas for a fabulous name:

Lavinia
Verity
Severine
Seraphina
Isolde
Felicity
Constance
Daphne
Meriel
Marina

Suz8 · 27/09/2024 22:35

I wouldn't OP but I don't think it's as bad as Olive Green or Olive Black.

Ioverslept · 27/09/2024 22:38

JC03745 · 27/09/2024 20:20

What about Olive or Olivia as a middle name? She may not always have Brown as a surname also.

She could always marry someone with the surname Wood 😉

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 27/09/2024 22:38

Olive Brown sounds a bit daft yeah... (Sorry!)

I really can't stand the name Olive anyway sorry @MrsB2019x And as for the On The Buses reference, my DC have heard of it and know the characters names - and they're only in their 20s. Most middle aged people I know have heard of it. (And all people past middle age have.) Also, Olive from Popeye springs to mind. Both Olives are really unattractive. 😬(Sadly that makes the name unappealing IMO.)

May sound dramatic, but I think it's borderline cruel to inflict that name on a child. Olivia Brown though - as has been said - sounds great.

Such as?

Owmyelbow · 27/09/2024 22:43

Get a dog and call it Olive. It's a good dog name

SweetSakura · 27/09/2024 22:44

TortillaChipAddict · 27/09/2024 22:15

You could go for a similar feel of name like Caper, Artichoke or Cheese Cube

Anchovy maybe?

OneZippyWasp · 27/09/2024 22:45

No you cannot have Olive OP.
The name reminds me of Olive Rudge the fictional character from On the Buses.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/09/2024 22:46

Olive is such an unattractive name for a little girl. I just can’t conjure up any positive associations with it.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 27/09/2024 22:47

No but Olivia is fine.
Michele?

Bumcake · 27/09/2024 22:47

Somewhere near me a block of flats has been named after someone called Olive Cox, that always makes me laugh. I wouldn’t question Olive Brown though.

Cornflakelover · 27/09/2024 22:47

I can remember olive from on the buses 😂
and Stan her brother and Reg the conductor 😂😂 and her husband the miserable sod

She was played by the actress was Anna Karen who was in Eastenders and she sadly died in house fire a few years ago

but she will always be Olive - to me
used to watch on the buses as kids

My niece is Olivia can’t say what her surname is but think of a tree

my ex MIL is Livia

OpalGoose · 27/09/2024 22:48

Noooo, don't name her Olive. That is like the jokes when i was at school about Isa Blue, Theresa Green.

This has been covered, but it’s literally half a century ago.

Olivia is ermmm so unimaginative..each to their own! Olive is a lovely name and quite popular . I know a couple of Olives and their parents are absolutely not interested in a program from the 70s ..they have chosen a name that they love.

Icantstaymarriedtoyoudavid · 27/09/2024 22:50

@MrsB2019x These Olive on the buses etc references are so dated
Olive Gray? Actress
Olive Mannella? Dancer
Olive Brown? your daughter! lol
They're all colourful names
