Im due ds2 at the end on april, and me and dp cant decide on a name. I like the older names like Jack, but everyones called that, and Jake, Oliver, Josh, and have a son (3yrs) called Alex. But dp isnt his dad, so had no say in his name.
Dp likes 'wierd' names like Sole (no, its a baby, not a fish dp!), and Chester (dog), and the only name we can remotely agree on is Dylan, but family members have commented that maybe its a bit 'common', and in chavish (please dont shout at me for using that word, I cant think of another that would explain what I mean).
So, is it?

you lot crack me up!a classy sophisticated name to one parent=horrid chavvy to another.no amount of foot stamping going to change it. so you know what chose a name you like and dont worry what anyone else thinks -easy!

Squirdle · 19/03/2008 22:54

Yay Pen, thats exactly what we are - classy

Flubdub - you are scaring me now - I have the same first name as you (spelt with a kah at the end though) So your eldest son has the same name as mine, you have the same name as me.....you have to call your baby Dylan!! (Or Caleb if you like) Does your DH's name begin with C?

barbamama · 19/03/2008 22:55

I know. You're right. Still stings though. Sob.

Squirdle · 19/03/2008 22:58

And if Rebekah/Rebecca is chavvy, I'll eat my hat (well I would if I had one)

cushioncover · 19/03/2008 23:01

When I said it was a naughty boy's name, I did quantify it by saying I felt a great deal of affection for them. I think my post shows that. Just to clarify, by naughty I mean rascal like

I'm sorry if I offended. I don't think it's at all chavvy (I said so in my earlier post)

scottishmummy · 19/03/2008 23:02

LOL!do you all trundle about asking strangers what shoes shall i buy - unlikely.so why the hell do you get yer drawers in a twist about names, knowing lets face it some stranger will disagree

Pen74 · 19/03/2008 23:05

Don't let it sting! Every name in the top 100 has probably appeared on a 'chav list' somewhere. I've seen normal names such as Lucas, Theo, Joshua, Jacob, Leo, Luca, George, Adam, Max, Oscar, Toby and Zachary branded as chav. Seriously take it with a pinch. It's nonsense!

barbamama · 19/03/2008 23:11

Don't worry, I'm a big girl, I can take it! I'm only joking! I was just surprised that one of my names made it into one of these discussions as clearly, I have impeccable taste and would never have inadvertantly given my child a chavvy, common name, oh no! (I wonder if there were mothers in the 80's who thought that about Wayne and Sharon?)

I knew no good would come of hanging around in this topic, sigh, serves me right for laughing at all the other chav/not chav discussions ....

cushioncover, you didn't offend me, I was thinking about the article, not what you said. I really don't care in RL but in MN world I repeat, am outraged at the very suggestion!

Anyway, what have we decided? Not Chav I hope.

scottishmummy · 19/03/2008 23:16

Lordy! Why ask stranger to comment on your child's name next thing the dog will pick your tampons

barbamama · 19/03/2008 23:18

lackaDAISYcal · 19/03/2008 23:19

dylan is a lovely traditional name so not chavvish at all.

I heard a woman in Sainsbury's today shouting at her son, diesel....now that is chavvy unusual.

scottishmummy · 19/03/2008 23:20

Nope, it begins with D.

Flubdub - I'm feeling a bit of a welsh thing going on with you now. Haydn also popular welsh name (Popular - Not Chav). As a taff myself can comment on the rarer welsh name.am liking Oscian (Pr. "Oshan"), Deian "Dee-Un", Ceredig & Hywel. Depends really whether you want DS to spend the rest of his life repeating & spelling his name. I'm also keen on the more unusual name, but need to be careful. Once knew a girl called Candida, and borthers called Asterix & Conan! I ask you! Agree with earlier Poster on name Rowan, love it & intend to use it if boy OR girl. Jack is nice, why don,t you sneak it in as a Jackson or Giacomo & shorten it later? Marley too awful. Also liking Ezra. Prefer Sol (solomon) to Saul. Give DP a book of names FGS, suspect he's making them up.

totalmisfit · 20/03/2008 10:20

this is the exact same problem dp and i went through when trying to chose a boys name. I love it as it makes me think of Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan but dp is a primary school teacher and would come home telling me about the horrid common little oiks with the name who had been driving him mad all day. So we kind of went off it. I still really like it tho' just not enough to use it. academic as we had a girl anyway. might use it as a middle name if we did have a boy in the future.

totalmisfit · 20/03/2008 10:26

i'm really annoyed that Georgia is on that list. It's my sister's name and she's not chavvy in the least.

vicsta · 20/03/2008 10:59

I think Chav is starting to become confused with popular. Nothing wrong with popular is there? Can so many people be wrong? Being popular doesn't make it chav - it just makes it popular, and therefore, by general consensus, a nice name. Georgia is lovely BTW, don't take offence. I like more unusual names, but whose to say I won't start a trend? Perhaps you mother named the first Georgia and then everyone else followed her good example.

barbamama · 20/03/2008 11:23

I have to say I went to school with a Georgia and she was the poshest of the posh - which is saying something for a swiss boarding school. I think you're right, names are less ridgidly applied to different classes, religions, geographic regions etc than they used to be so they can crop up everywhere.

Squirdle · 20/03/2008 14:25

Phew, flubdub Was beginning to think I had a double out there! Mind you, sometimes DH's name does begin with a 'D' dependant on how annoying he has been

I think it's right to say that popular is getitng confused with chavvy. And I guess different names can be more popular in different places. Dylan isn't a popular name here in Hampshire...well I haven't met another yet. But I do think it is becoming more popular. It doesn't really matter if it is popular anyway, if you like it, use it.

DH says our Dylan was named after the rabbit in The Magic Roundabout...that is untrue

minster · 20/03/2008 18:15

Dylan isn't at all chavvy (as long as you spell it properly, not Dillon shudder) it's very popular here though (Berkshire) often as a brother to Ruby (slightly aspirational urban trendies!). It's a good name though

Flubdub · 20/03/2008 21:27

Georgia isnt chavvy! Theres a little girl at ds's nursery called Georgia, and her family are probably the least chavvy people in our town!

Vicsta - he is making them up. I think he thought I wouldnt notice.
