Im due ds2 at the end on april, and me and dp cant decide on a name. I like the older names like Jack, but everyones called that, and Jake, Oliver, Josh, and have a son (3yrs) called Alex. But dp isnt his dad, so had no say in his name.
Dp likes 'wierd' names like Sole (no, its a baby, not a fish dp!), and Chester (dog), and the only name we can remotely agree on is Dylan, but family members have commented that maybe its a bit 'common', and in chavish (please dont shout at me for using that word, I cant think of another that would explain what I mean).
So, is it?

My wealthy and posh neighbours have a son called Dylan. I like it.

zippitippitoes · 19/03/2008 08:49

i thought that boden chap was johnny

DontCallMeBunny · 19/03/2008 08:55

Dylan is nice - I know just the one little Dylan, he's about 1.5, the little brother of one of DD's ballet classmates. He goes round minesweeping for snacks after the class, the little girls can't resist.

AtheneNoctua · 19/03/2008 08:57

Dylan is not Chavvy. Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas named her theirt son Dylan. I think it is a Welsh name, but not sure.

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 09:06

So, I can safely say, if someone heard my son was called Dylan, they wouldnt screw their nose up?

Flubdub if you like the name Dylan you should use it. You most definitely should not NOT use it because people would think it "chavvish" which is a horrible term. How can you think, I like this name but if others look down their noses, I will happily ditch it? Give YOUR baby a name you like, not a name you think will be somehow socially acceptable.

Choose a name you like and don't worry about ridiculous snobby comments (and I say this as someone who has currently got a baby name thread open so I'm not saying don't look for suggestions).

Sorry - I just hate the use of terms like "chavvish". I don't know what "scally" means - someone else used it here - but I assume something similar.

Chavvy Baby Names

Not that Dylan is not on the list... but Alex is!

StealthPolarBear · 19/03/2008 09:15

Dylan is lovely
but sounds as though it's a compromise for both of you

MadameCh0let · 19/03/2008 09:19

Not Johnny on the birth cert! Just John. That leaves you the option of Johnny, Jock, John, Jack....
I think Jock is McCool.

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 09:59

I dont think Alex and Adam are chavvy names! Am I wrong? I thought Alexander was quite a nice, traditional name.

I like the name Dylan but the fact that Catherine Zeta Jones used it puts me right off.

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 10:06

Am still in shock that Alex was mentioned on that thread so many times! But I can think of plenty of names that wernt mentioned once!
My name was on there too

I know of
a little girl called Xena

StealthPolarBear · 19/03/2008 10:16

That's a nasty spiteful article

Twinkie1 · 19/03/2008 10:18

You can't use Reuben - is my name for DC3 that I am never going to have!

Wanted it for DS but DH said it tooo Jewish! - so dope went for Maximillian instead (like that not Jewish enough!)

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 10:19

I like Reuben - its different, but not wierd.

SPB - yes, its an awful article - I hope those teachers were named.

FWIW The guy on Hollyoaks was actually Sol, as in short for Solomon. Tell him it rhymes with 'doll'

TheHonEnid · 19/03/2008 10:25

aaah

dd3's fave friend at nursery is called Dylan

she says 'night dylan' before she goes to sleep

for that reason I am rather fond of it

kiskideesameanoldmother · 19/03/2008 10:26

I like Dylan it always reminds me of a Dylan I have taught. Goodlooking, polite, intelligent, considerate, athletic (on the county cross country team). Cannot think of one thing about him I don't like.

The other Dillon I know is very likeable. They have wiped the memory of any horrible Dylans/Dillons I've ever taught.

Dh on the other hand has a very very chavvy second name which everyone knows him by. He has bucked the trend in the article as far as achievement goes.

TheHonEnid · 19/03/2008 10:26

agree it is nasty spiteful article

perhaps they should add 'Laura' to the list of troublemaker names

Twinkie1 · 19/03/2008 10:28

I thought kids were called Sol and it was pronounced Sole by stupid people?

Sol in Hollyoaks was such a knob on the show and in real life that I Really couldn;t name my kid that anyway!
