Im due ds2 at the end on april, and me and dp cant decide on a name. I like the older names like Jack, but everyones called that, and Jake, Oliver, Josh, and have a son (3yrs) called Alex. But dp isnt his dad, so had no say in his name.
Dp likes 'wierd' names like Sole (no, its a baby, not a fish dp!), and Chester (dog), and the only name we can remotely agree on is Dylan, but family members have commented that maybe its a bit 'common', and in chavish (please dont shout at me for using that word, I cant think of another that would explain what I mean).
So, is it?

I thought kids were called Sol and it was pronounced Sole by stupid people?

Lol, I'll tell him you said that!

why is it ridiculous for an adult to be called jonny? Are you supposed to change your name at 18 - Hey I am going to be John from now on (deep voice)

stleger · 19/03/2008 10:32

The chavvy list is obviously where Coronation Street people go for naming characters. The Irish Dylans I know belong to my dentist, a primary teacher and a Montessori teacher.

Twinkie1 · 19/03/2008 10:35

I couldn't call a grown up Johnny!

Would have to snigger!

iloverosycheeks · 19/03/2008 10:36

really Twinkle1 - thats bizarre

zippitippitoes · 19/03/2008 10:38

well in that case surely you wouldnt call a grown up jamie or nicky

zippitippitoes · 19/03/2008 10:38

or tony

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 10:39

I know an adult Johnney - hes a complete t**t, but hes an adult none the less! I dont think its wierd for an adult though.

My dh's name is on the Daily Mail chav list.

His name has never been on a list before, not even on here!

(and he has an honours degree in Law!)

stleger · 19/03/2008 10:40

When did Jamie become a name and why? Was there a famous Jamie? Dh has a student called Jamie who is about 28 who is our oldest one we know, dd is 14 and knows about 10 of them...

Twinkie1 · 19/03/2008 10:41

I know I am sad but nicky or tony aren't nicknames for condoms and people don't normally call their kids tony or nicky do they - I would say ther are called Nicolas or Anthony and it is shortened - Johnny !

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 10:42

My ex was called Jamie, he'll be about 26 now. But I dont like it for a girls name.

Dp's ex girlfriend is called Jamie, and my ex's current girlfriend is called Jamie. I cant imagine having a newborn baby girl called Jamie.

Some teachers have always had these attitudes in private. They just no longer have the sense to refrain from publicising their prejudices. My mum was an infant school teacher and each September she and her colleagues would look for the 'hairdressers' names' on the list of incoming children as the ones to watch out for . It was horrible and snobbish then and it sounds like nothing's changed.

VictorianPASqualor · 19/03/2008 13:05

DP is Johnny, short for Jonathan though, I don't like plain old 'John' but he suits Johnny and Jonathan works when he neds to sound more formal.

Dylan, sorry to those of you who have DC's called Dyaln but I hate it, probably partly because my first proper BF left me for some other girl then they called their kid Dylan, also for some reason when DP was growing up he says that the word dylan was used as 'idiot' or 'prat' you'd say someone was a 'bit of a dylan' so two not nice connotations for me.

I do love Alex though, It's my top choice for this DC, we have Bobby and did think about Liam.

Jodyray · 19/03/2008 13:14

Dylan is a lovely name. Not at all chav-ish. And there are none in my DS school so its not all that common round here! My nephew is called Jack and I was well cheesed off when my bro called him that, how selfish haha! My other nephew is Max. Both names are fairly popular at their schools. For what its worth my son is called Blake cos i wanted something different, despite all the SEVEN and CARRINGTON jokes which to be honest i was expecting! Some other names which my mates have called their DSs are Finlay, Oscar, Stan.

Kindersurpise · 19/03/2008 13:23

Dylan is ok, not chavish. Not mad about it but ok.

I had a guy at school with me calledd Zenobius. DON'T tell your DH that, Flub. I have a feeling he might like it.

Little boy in DD's kindergarten called Anton. I quite like that.

You really need a noble, royal name to go with Alexander and Max. Greek one would be good.

Constantine?

Jodyray · 19/03/2008 13:41

Oh and a mate has also called his son Rafferty like Jude Laws son. Another thread just reminded me of that one!

chocolatemummy · 19/03/2008 13:47

I like Dylan, my nephew is called it but it is getting very common now
What about:
Sam
Dexter (which i think is very cool)
Charlie
Mac
Peter (Peter Pan of course)
Russel
Bradley

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 16:17

I really like Bradley, it was a possibility, but Im thinking that people would shorten it to Brad, which doesnt sound nice on a baby, or child, or even an adult.

Washersaurus · 19/03/2008 16:19

I would quite like a Magnus to go with my Dylan and George, but DH hates it....we'll see

TheDevilEatsNestle · 19/03/2008 17:26

Like the icecream?

Squiffy · 19/03/2008 17:42

That list is nasty, spiteful, mean-spirited and downright offensive.

It has definately not (ahem) gone straight on my list of favourites. And it has definately not been put there alongside this (must be about time this one does the rounds again)

No19 · 19/03/2008 17:48

Oh you make me sick.

Squirdle · 19/03/2008 18:20

Alex - chavvy!! Gawd I must be sooooo chavvvy ( I hate that word) if I have an Alex and a Dylan! Is Caleb chavvy too?

I think you should name your baby whatever you want to and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. If you like a name, you like it!

(Tho Alex and Dylan do go v. well together )

princessmel · 19/03/2008 18:26

OMG my name is on the list of chav girls names f***g cheek

[fuming]
